Okay be honest with me… have you ever looked at your bank account and thought "wait, that's not right," scrolled back, and found four or five little Klarna/Afterpay/Sezzle charges that all hit the same weekend? 😅 If so, you are SO not alone, and this episode is for you. This week we're talking about buy now, pay later, and why something that feels so small and harmless at checkout can quietly become one of the most disorienting things in your financial life. Because BNPL doesn't ask you to think about your total balance. It only ever asks about the payment in front of you, right now. So you end up with five or six little installment plans stacked on top of each other, none of them talking to each other... until payday, when your paycheck is suddenly a lot smaller than you thought. 💸 This one is personal for me. I used to use BNPL for pretty much everything, and I wasn't tracking what I owed across all the different apps. I regularly ended up with little to no money to actually live on, and it took me a long time to realize the low-grade dread I was carrying was financial anxiety, coming directly from not knowing what I owed. I've since broken that cycle (slowly, imperfectly, and it took longer than I wanted it to), and I feel more stable than I have in a long time… not because I have more money, but because I finally have visibility. We also get into the messaging around BNPL as a "smart budgeting tool", and why I actually disagree with that framing when it comes to wants, while holding space for the reality that for some people, BNPL is genuinely how groceries get bought this month. That's structural, not a character flaw, and it deserves to be talked about honestly. What we cover in this episode: 🔹 How the BNPL "loan stacking" cycle actually works (and why it's built that way) 🔹 My own experience losing track of BNPL payments, and the financial anxiety I didn't have a name for yet 🔹 Why I push back on the "BNPL is a budgeting tool" narrative 🔹 The real distinction: not whether you use BNPL, but why, and whether you can see the whole picture 🔹 A step-by-step way to audit every active BNPL plan you have 🔹 Why breaking this habit takes time, and why that's okay If any part of this hit close to home, I hope it also reminded you that this is one of the easiest cycles to fall into, and that noticing it is already the hardest part done. 💛 🎧 LISTEN NOW: Spotify → https://open.spotify.com/show/2LW5XQLrnEnqD0mGdXszR1 Apple Podcasts → https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/financial-reset-with-the-finance-angel/id1885621115 All platforms → https://thefinanceangel.org/podcast 📖 FREE Financial Reset Starter Guide → https://us.bigin.online/org927659317/forms/free-financial-workbook-download-and-email-signup 💬 Submit a listener question → https://forms.gle/HFAsbQut3VMgACUV7 ☕ Love the podcast?
