The DIP Explained - What it Means for UK Maritime

In this episode of the Maritime Forecast, Darren Jones, Maritime Director at Develop Consulting, is joined by Mark Albon, Director of the Maritime Defence and Security Group at the Society of Maritime Industries, to unpack the government's newly published Defence Investment Plan. They discuss what the £298 billion four year commitment, including £15 billion of additional funding, means for the maritime supply chain, and why the real conversation now is about delivery rather than the headline numbers. Mark sets out the difference between UK content and true sovereign capability, using the Type 26 deal with Norway as an example of how offset arrangements complicate the buy British narrative, and explains why the UK's shipbuilding capacity problem is really a skilled workforce problem, with an OECD study showing only 41% of UK shipbuilding capacity currently in use. The conversation also touches on the scale of investment earmarked for the nuclear enterprise as one of the plan's standout maritime commitments. The Maritime Forecast is a podcast from Develop Consulting, produced in partnership with the Society of Maritime Industries.
