Why We Should Watch Our Words Our words may seem small and ordinary, but the Bible teaches that they have tremendous power. What we say can encourage someone, heal a relationship, strengthen another person’s faith—or cause hurt that may be difficult to undo. That is why Christians are called to be careful about what comes out of our mouths. 1. Our words reveal what is in our hearts Jesus said in Matthew 12:34, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Our speech often reveals what is going on inside us. When we are angry, frustrated, jealous, or proud, those feelings can come out through our words. Likewise, a heart filled with love, patience, and gratitude will tend to produce words that build others up. So watching our words is more than simply avoiding bad language. It means allowing God to change our hearts so that our speech reflects Christ. Discussion: What can our words reveal about the condition of our hearts? 2. Words have the power to build up or tear down Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” That is a powerful reminder that words matter. A simple “I’m proud of you,” “I forgive you,” or “God is with you” can give someone courage. On the other hand, insults, gossip, harsh criticism, and angry words can deeply wound someone. Ephesians 4:29 gives us a practical standard: our speech should be used for “building up” others and giving grace to those who hear us. Before speaking, we can ask ourselves: Will these words help this person, or will they unnecessarily hurt them? 3. We need to control our anger One of the hardest times to watch our words is when we are angry. James 1:19-20 tells us to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,” because human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. When emotions are strong, we may say things we later regret. Sometimes the wisest response is to pause, pray, and wait before answering. Being slow to speak doesn't mean avoiding difficult conversations. It means choosing to have those conversations in a way that honors God.
