Chloe Maxmin has spent her life challenging assumptions about rural America, progressive politics, and what it takes to win elections. At 25, she flipped a Republican-held seat in the Maine House, then went on to defeat the Republican leader in the State Senate. But after four years in office, she walked away from elected politics to return to organizing. Today, she is the co-founder of Dirtroad Organizing, helping candidates and communities across rural America build political power. This week, Luca is joined by a special guest co-host, Lucas St. Clair — public lands advocate, former congressional candidate, and Season 1 guest — for a conversation with Chloe about what rural America can teach us about politics, and what Democrats keep getting wrong. Chloe takes us inside her unlikely victories in conservative Maine, where she knocked on more than 20,000 doors and discovered that voters who disagreed with her politics often shared her deepest values. We talk about the pressure to fall in line with your party, the tension between moral clarity and political compromise, and why she ultimately decided she could make a bigger difference outside the State House.
