Episode 16 - What are you carrying that is not yours

Ashleigh and Jennifer welcome John to talk about burdens that do not belong to you, how to tell when someone is trying to hand you their issues, and how to evaluate your role in your own baggage. Then complete these sentences: I have been carrying __________. I believed it was mine because __________. The portion that genuinely belongs to me is __________. The portion I am ready to return or release is __________. If I put it down, I may feel __________. Feeling that does not mean I made the wrong decision. 1. Did I create this? Did my choice, promise or behavior create this obligation? Or did I assume responsibility because no one else stepped forward? Am I being held responsible for an outcome I do not have the power to control? Helping someone who cannot carry something is different from rescuing someone who would prefer not to. Would there be genuine harm—or discomfort, disappointment and natural consequences? Has my involvement become the reason someone else never has to develop the ability to handle it? Do I fear being called selfish, unreliable, cold, difficult or ungrateful? Most situations are not entirely mine or entirely theirs. What is my specific 10%, 20% or 50%? Question for everyone: What changes when we stop asking, “Whose fault is this?” and start asking, “Which part of this is actually mine to carry?” 2. Did I explicitly agree to carry it?3. Do I have actual authority?4. Is the person involved capable of carrying it?5. What would happen if I stopped?6. Am I helping, or am I preventing growth?7. What am I afraid this says about me?8. What portion is actually mine?
