AI for Good: Embracing the Tension in Responsible AI

Welcome back to the second episode of our [AI for Good] miniseries. This week, we introduce our initiative philosophy for our four principles guiding our approach to responsible and ethical AI: Embrace the Tension, Doubt Well, Dead Orgs Don’t Deliver, and Nothing Comes for Free.   We chat with Elizabeth Knox of MatchPace to deep dive into our first principle, “Embrace the Tension,” and explore what it looks like to hold multiple, sometimes opposing, views and experiences around AI adoption and implementation at once.   Join Destiny, Kate, and Elizabeth as we reckon with the tension between AI’s potential as a powerful force for transformation and the imperfections, gaps, biases, challenges, and harms it can bring. We explore what a human-centered approach to AI looks like when there aren’t simple answers - and why responsible AI requires making room for both possibility and skepticism.

AI for Good: Why This Conversation Matters

In the first episode of our AI for Good mini-series, we're asking a harder question than "how do we use AI for good?" We're asking what "good" actually requires, and who gets to decide. This is a conversation about judgment. We talk about what changes when an organization brings AI into public services, nonprofits, or the people they serve, and what gets lost if that shift isn't examined closely. We cover where AI genuinely helps and where it doesn't, and why the difference usually comes down to leadership willing to ask uncomfortable questions before adopting anything. Whether you're early in your AI journey or already deep into it, this episode offers a way of thinking that treats AI as a tool that has to earn its place.   Join us as we kick off a series built on a simple premise: technology should serve people. Proving that takes scrutiny.

    Polygovernance and the Third Space

What happens when governance moves beyond rigid hierarchies and into something more fluid, adaptive, and human-centered? In this episode, we explore polygovernance—a model where multiple systems of decision-making coexist—and how it gives rise to what we call the Third Space. This is the space between top-down control and total decentralization, where collaboration, trust, and shared ownership can actually thrive. We break down how traditional governance models fall short in complex, modern environments, and why a layered, networked approach is better suited for communities, organizations, and digital ecosystems. From real-world examples to emerging frameworks, we examine how polygovernance enables resilience, innovation, and more equitable participation. If you’ve ever felt stuck between chaos and control, this episode offers a new lens: governance not as a system of authority, but as a living, evolving practice.

Buying in the Chaos (Part II): Why We Bought HWC Anyway

So… we kept going. In Part II of Buying in the Chaos, we pick up right where we left off—still in the middle of uncertainty, still making decisions without a clear playbook. This episode goes deeper into the why behind our acquisition of HWC, and what ultimately pushed us to move forward despite the risk. We get into the realities of navigating disruption while actively running a business, how we weighed the unknowns, and what it looks like to commit to a path when you can’t fully see the outcome yet. This isn’t a retrospective. It’s still happening in real time. If Part I was about how the opportunity came together, this is about the moment of decision—what tipped the scale, what we’re betting on, and what we’re learning as we go. Because sometimes the clearest move forward… is the one you make in the middle of chaos.

Buying in the Chaos (Part I): Why We Bought HWC Anyway

So… we bought a company. In this episode of the JPod, we’re unpacking our acquisition of HWC—a federal consulting firm we used to be part of—and why we chose to do it at what honestly looked like the worst possible time. We talk about what HWC is, our history there, and how this opportunity came together—but more importantly, we’re bringing you into the decision-making as it’s happening. Not in hindsight. We don’t have all the answers. We don’t know exactly how this plays out. But we do know why we made the call—and what it looks like to move forward when things feel uncertain, messy, and high-stakes. This isn’t about a perfect strategy. It’s about navigating complexity in real time—and making the move anyway. If you’re trying to figure out your next step in the middle of change, this one’s for you.
