You Seem So Normal | JB Lawrence on Vision Loss, Diabetes, and Refusing to Disappear

He lost his vision. Found out he was diabetic. Got married. Is raising a family. Still working. Then kidney failure. A kidney transplant. Then his sister died. Then his dad. Then his mom. And it was only after all of that — that he finally got the training he needed all along. The top half of the cover art is a photo of JB Lawrence smiling with his head leaned against his dog — a shaggy black-and-white dog with one blue eye and one brown eye. JB has short hair and a trimmed beard and wears a black tank top; the two are sitting together on a carpeted staircase. The bottom half is solid eleVIVO teal with bold black text reading “You Seem So Normal,” and the eleVIVO logo in a white circle in the bottom right corner. In this episode of Thriving with Vision Loss, Michelle sits down with JB Lawrence, a TikTok and Instagram creator behind #blindtalk, where he has built a loyal following in the blind and low vision community by showing up as exactly who he is. His story is as frank as it is uplifting. JB lost his vision at the end of 2017, and in the middle of everything else, received a diabetes diagnosis he never saw coming. He got married, is raising a family, and kept working through kidney failure, a transplant, and the deaths of his sister, his father, and his mother — without ever really having space to grieve. He had no formal training for years — not because he didn’t eventually try to get it, but because when he did, waitlists stood in the way. For a long time, what he was doing wasn’t working and he was isolating. When he finally got orientation and mobility training, it changed things. And he’ll tell you directly: asking for help sooner would have changed even more. What comes through in this conversation is not performed resilience. JB is genuinely upbeat, surprisingly funny, and completely honest about the hard parts — because he believes you can’t have good days without bad ones, and that every story, including yours, is worth telling. In this episode, you will learn: • What the first months after vision loss really look like when you have no formal support • How a surprise diabetes diagnosis landed at the same time as vision loss • Why isolation is one of the most common and least talked about realities of vision loss • What waitlists for orientation and mobility training cost people who are finally ready to ask for help • What JB wishes someone had told him in 2017 Thriving with Vision Loss is an eleVIVO original series sharing stories, practical tools, and lived wisdom from people building meaningful lives with blindness or low vision. eleVIVO supports individuals and families navigating vision loss, and is designed to scale in partnership with agencies and nonprofit organizations that serve them.
