Why Probiotics Alone Won't Fix Your Digestive Problems: The Gut - Brain Connection

What if supporting a healthier brain starts with paying attention to your gut and "Why Probiotics Alone Won't Fix Your Digestive Problems." Your digestive tract has its own nerve network, your “second brain”, and it’s constantly communicating with the brain in your head. That conversation connects digestion, stress, immune activity, and the environment supporting your nervous system. In this episode of From the Source with Dr. Gary, we build on our discussion of neuroplasticity to explore the gut–brain connection and why it matters for healthy aging. Discover: • How the enteric nervous system works with “fight or flight” and “rest and digest.” • Why your gut microbiome is a living garden that needs consistent nourishment. • How fiber, protein, essential fats, and key nutrients support gut and nervous system function. • How ultra-processed foods may reinforce cravings—and how healthier patterns can be practiced. • Why stress and digestive discomfort can become a repeating loop. • When recurring gas, bloating, or indigestion deserves a closer look through individualized assessment and testing. From childhood development to memory, mood, focus, and healthy aging, we explore practical ways to support the body that supports your brain. Find the source. Simplify the solution. The Adaptable Brain: The Power of Neuroplasticity

THE ADAPTABLE BRAIN: THE POWER OF NEUROPLASTICITY Are You Really Too Old to Learn Something New? "I'm too old for that." Too old to learn a language, improve balance, start exercising, or try something unfamiliar. But what if the aging brain is far more adaptable than we think? In this episode of From the Source with Dr. Gary, we explore neuroplasticity—the brain and nervous system's lifelong ability to learn, reorganize, and adapt to experience. LONGEVITY: MORE THAN BIRTHDAYS Japan reported 99,763 people aged 100 or older in 2025. But living longer raises a bigger question: How much life can we preserve within those years? We examine four dimensions of healthy aging: • Lifespan: How long we live. • Healthspan: How well we live. • Muscle span: Strength, mobility, and independence. • Cognitive span: Thinking, learning, memory, and engagement. We also discuss the reported 12.4-year lifespan–healthspan gap—and why closing it matters. IN THIS EPISODE • Why aging doesn't switch off neuroplasticity. • What stroke recovery teaches us about neural reorganization. • Why adaptation works both ways: our habits and environments matter. • How walking, dancing, balance training, and pickleball challenge the nervous system. • Why novelty, practice, and recovery belong together. THE ADAPTATION FORMULA NOVELTY → CHALLENGE → REPETITION → RECOVERY → ADAPTATION "You aren't merely accumulating information. You're giving your nervous system experiences to adapt to." Learn five words in another language. Try a new balance exercise. Take a different walking route. Pick up an instrument. Give your nervous system a reason to adapt. Growing older is inevitable. The Spine Is A Sensory Organ: Why Movement Matters to the Aging Brain

What if you’ve been thinking about your spine all wrong? It does more than hold you upright or get your attention when your back hurts. Your spine—and the muscles and joints surrounding it—helps your brain understand where you are, how you’re moving, and how to respond when life throws you off balance. Sometimes literally. Catch your foot on a rug, and your body responds before you’ve even processed what happened. Behind that split-second reaction is an ongoing conversation between your brain and body. Movement helps keep that conversation going. In this episode of From the Source with Dr. Gary, we explore Your Spine Is a Sensory Organ: Why Movement Matters to the Aging Brain—and why spinal function belongs in the longevity conversation. You’ll discover: • How movement provides sensory information that helps your nervous system coordinate balance, posture, and everyday activities. • What proprioception means—and why knowing where your body is in space matters for staying active and independent. • How chiropractic’s classic safety pin analogy illustrates communication between the brain and body, and how subluxation is understood through that teaching model. • How changes in spinal movement, muscle activity, and sensory input can affect that ongoing conversation. • Why paying attention to function means asking more than, “Does it hurt?” We also connect spinal health to the framework at the heart of this longevity series: Sense. Integrate. Respond. Recover. Adapt. Whether your goal is traveling, carrying groceries, playing with your grandchildren, or confidently catching yourself when you stumble, those abilities depend on coordinated movement and nervous-system function. Healthy aging is about keeping the ability to participate in the life you love. Listen in—and discover why your spine deserves your attention long before pain demands it. www.thesourcenaturalhealth.com

    Where Longevity Begins

What good are more years if we lose the ability to enjoy them? In this episode of From the Source with Dr. Gary, we explore longevity through the lens of quality of life. Living longer matters, but so does maintaining the strength, mobility, independence, and resilience that allow us to participate fully in life. The goal is to keep doing the things that make those birthdays worth celebrating. Picture yourself at 80, 90, or even 100. Are you walking with confidence? Spending time with family? Traveling, gardening, exercising, or enjoying the activities you love? Dr. Gary introduces the distinction between lifespan and health span. Lifespan describes how long we live. Health span focuses on the years we spend living in good health. He also explores muscle span: preserving the strength and physical capacity that support movement, daily activities, and independence as we age. These ideas lead to a central question: How can we help our years of health keep pace with our years of life? At the center of this conversation is the nervous system. Your brain, spinal cord, and nerves continually receive information from your body and the world around you. They help coordinate movement, regulate bodily functions, and shape how you respond to changing demands. Throughout life, we encounter physical, chemical, and emotional stresses. Our ability to respond to those demands, recover, and adapt influences how we function. Aging well means supporting the capacity to meet life's demands while allowing time and resources for recovery. This episode also invites us to reconsider how we interpret symptoms. Fatigue, discomfort, and changes in function can provide useful information about what is happening in the body. They deserve attention, appropriate evaluation, and an understanding of their possible causes. Rather than simply pushing through or focusing only on making a symptom disappear, we can ask better questions: What might this signal be telling me? Have I been getting adequate rest? Am I moving enough? Have my demands exceeded my ability to recover? Is this something that needs professional assessment? Dr. Gary also considers what the study of people who live exceptionally long lives can teach us. Genetics are part of the picture, alongside our habits, environment, relationships, and circumstances. Longevity is influenced by many factors, and no single habit or intervention guarantees a long, healthy life. Still, our daily choices give us opportunities to support the future we want. Movement, strength, restorative sleep, nourishing food, meaningful connection, and a sense of purpose all belong in the conversation. We also explore the health span gap: the distance between the years we live and the years we live in good health. Closing that gap means paying attention to function and quality of life now, before limitations begin making decisions for us. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why longevity should include quality of life, function, and independence. • How lifespan, health span, and muscle span shape a more complete vision of aging. • The nervous system's role in sensing, responding, and adapting. • Why symptoms can be signals worth understanding. • How daily habits and recovery fit into a longevity strategy. • Why envisioning your future self can give today's choices greater meaning. Start with one action that supports your future self. Take a walk. Make room for recovery. Build strength. Reconnect with someone you care about. We are building or compromising our future health span every day. Join Dr. Gary for a conversation about living with greater capacity, purpose, and possibility. In the next episode, we explore stress and longevity, including how appropriate challenges, followed by recovery, can support growth and resilience. Find The Source. Simplify The Solution.
