Unfiltered Ink is where writers don’t hold back. Fiction or nonfiction, how much of the writer finds its way into the writing? Sometimes it’s intentional. Other times, pieces of our experiences, memories, emotions, and truths slip into the work before we even realize they’re there. Hosted by Dr. Elle, Unfiltered Ink explores the story behind the story—the words writers chose to put on the page, the ones they left out, and the ones they sometimes wish they had written. Through candid conversations with authors, writers, poets, screenwriters, and storytellers, we uncover the craft, characters

Character Development: Why We Care What Happens Next

What makes a fictional character feel real enough for us to care about what happens to them? In Episode 5 of Unfiltered Ink, Dr. Elea explores the psychology of character development and the role our brains play in understanding, predicting, and connecting with fictional characters. We break down the difference between plot and character: plot keeps us turning the pages because we want to know what happens next, while character makes us invested in what happens next because we care about who it happens to. We also explore the contradictions that make characters believable. A person can love someone and still hurt them. A character can make a decision we disagree with and still evoke our empathy. Using the emotion expressed in Donny Hathaway’s music as an example, we examine how love, hurt, regret, attachment, and contradiction can coexist—and how writers can use those emotional layers to create more complex characters. Because great character development isn’t just about giving a character a name, a background, and a personality. It’s about understanding them well enough to make the reader understand them too. Is There A Part of You In Your Fictional Characters?

In Part 2 of Episode 4, Dr. Elea explores the psychology behind the characters writers create. From fears and desires to wounds, fantasies, values, and even the things we would never say out loud, pieces of the writer can appear in unexpected places. But what if the character who carries the most of you is not the one who looks or acts like you? What if it's the villain? The character who made the choice you never could? Or the one who finally gets the ending you wish had happened differently? We explore how writers can unconsciously scatter pieces of themselves throughout their stories—and why the question may not be “Which character is you?” but rather: “How much of you is hiding in all of them?” If you've ever created a character who surprised you, affected you emotionally, or felt a little too real, this episode of Unfiltered Ink is for you.

Why do some of us reach for the pen? The psychology behind writing

Is there actually a writer in all of us? And if there is, why do some people reach for a pen when life gets complicated, while others reach for the phone? In Part 1 of this two-part episode of Unfiltered Ink, Dr. Elea explores the psychology behind becoming a writer. What makes some of us turn our thoughts, emotions, observations, and experiences into words? Are writers simply people who love language—or is there something deeper happening in the way they process the world? We explore the writer’s inner world, sensitivity to nuance, imagination, emotional processing, self-expression, and the ways writing can help us make meaning out of experiences we may not yet know how to say aloud. Maybe becoming a writer isn’t always a decision. Maybe, for some of us, writing is simply where the mind naturally goes. And if you’ve never considered yourself a writer before, this episode just might make you reconsider. Then come back for Part 2: How Much of You Is Hiding in Your Character? Readers, writers, storytellers—and anyone who has ever had something inside them they couldn’t quite say out loud—this one is for you.

When applying the rules of writing, does YOUR voice survive the edit?

Every writer has heard the rules: show, don’t tell; avoid clichés; don’t use too many adverbs; don’t start with a dream. But what happens when following the rules starts to erase the very thing that makes your writing yours? In this episode of The Unfiltered Ink Podcast, Dr. Eleasha Partner explores the difference between learning the craft and losing your voice to it. When does editing strengthen your writing—and when does it become self-censorship? Do “bad” writing choices become good ones when they’re intentional? The rules can sharpen your writing, but your voice should survive the edit. So, when applying the rules of writing… does YOUR voice survive the edit?

The sentence you deleted: Is it Censorship or Negotiation

Have you ever written a sentence, stared at it, and thought, I can't let anybody read that? In this episode of Unfiltered Ink, Dr. Elle explores the moment writing becomes something more than expression—it becomes a negotiation between what we really want to say and what we're willing to let someone else read. Why do writers soften their words, delete uncomfortable truths, or begin imagining the reactions of family, friends, readers, and even strangers before the work is finished? Is that thoughtful editing and discernment—or are we censoring ourselves? From the sentence we delete to the truth we polish until it no longer sounds like us, this episode examines self-censorship, vulnerability, fear, privacy, and the psychology behind holding back on the page. Because sometimes the writer knows exactly what they want to say. The question is whether they're willing to deal with what happens after they say it.

“The Writer Behind the Words: When Truth Leaves a Fingerprint”

Where do our characters really come from—and how much of the writer finds its way into the writing without us even realizing it? In the first episode of Unfiltered Ink, Dr. Elea welcomes listeners into The Inkwell and explores the fascinating relationship between writing and the conscious and subconscious mind. From the characters we deliberately create to the memories, emotions, observations, relationships, and experiences that may quietly influence what lands on the page, this episode goes beneath the surface of the creative process. Dr. Elea also shares part of her own journey into writing and explores why some of our best ideas seem to appear when we're not writing at all. Is a character ever completely imagined? Why do certain emotions, personalities, conflicts, or stories call to us? And have you ever reread your own work and thought, Wait…where did that come from? This is more than the story on the page. It's the story behind the story—and the conscious and subconscious mind behind the person creating it. Because sometimes truth leaves a fingerprint. Conscious. Subconscious. Unfiltered.
