The Story Behind Portland’s New Gay Bar CAMP | Slightly Unhinged

CAMP is open, Logan is here, and Portland got one of its queer spaces back. Justin sits down with Logan Veilens, one of the owners of CAMP, the new gay bar in the former Scandals space on Harvey Milk Street. Logan has been part of Portland’s queer community for more than 30 years. He’s also a barber, personal trainer, owner of Best Coast Barber Co., owner of Best Coast Fitness, and somehow still has time to help open a bar. They talk about how CAMP came together, why it mattered to keep that space queer, and what it felt like when people walked back through those doors for the first time. They also get into old Portland gay bars, Vaseline Alley, Scandals memories, Logan’s work in barbering and fitness, and what’s coming next at CAMP, including drag events, watch parties, comedy nights, weekend brunch energy, Oregon football, Operation Alpine, Heated Rivalry, and more. And because it’s Slightly Unhinged, Justin and Logan wrap with a round of Still Standing or Leave It in the Past covering mullets, mustaches, baggy jeans, skinny jeans, wallpaper, tiki bars, Madonna, Whitney, and what should stay gone. About Logan Veilens Logan Veilens is a longtime Portland queer community member, barber, personal trainer, business owner, and one of the owners of CAMP. He owns Best Coast Barber Co., a queer-owned barbershop offering haircuts, color, shaves, waxing, teeth whitening, hydrafacials, microneedling, and more. He also runs Best Coast Fitness, where he helps people build strength, confidence, and a better relationship with their bodies. Whether it’s a haircut, a workout, or a neighborhood bar, Logan’s work is about helping people feel more comfortable being themselves. Reality Show Alliances, Betrayal & Prosecco | Slightly Unhinged

Q is here, and we are getting into the Big Biotch house. Justin sits down with Quenton McClure, better known as Q, one of his housemates from Big Biotch Portland / BBPDX. They talk about getting cast, walking into a house full of queer chaos, trying to play a social strategy game with almost no idea what to expect, and how the whole thing turned into a very messy little science experiment. They break down the alliances, the votes, the brunch challenge, Justin’s prosecco controversy, Q trying to keep Justin in the game, the driveway fall, Q’s own eviction, and what they think going into the finale. Outside of Big Biotch, Q is a B2B tech marketing leader building a fractional consulting practice in Portland. He is also newly married, a Portland transplant from Appalachia, and a rugby player with the Portland Lumberjacks. He talks about queer sports, finding community through rugby, and why getting tackled by your friends is somehow sentimental. And then, because it’s Slightly Unhinged, Justin ends with a rapid-fire round covering rugby shorts, gray sweatpants, unlocked phones, hot and dumb versus average and hilarious, and some very direct Big Biotch opinions. About Q Quenton McClure, who goes by Q, is a B2B tech marketing leader with 13+ years of experience in demand generation. He is currently building a fractional consulting practice in Portland. Q plays rugby with the Portland Lumberjacks, is newly married to his husband Ryan, and loves exploring Portland’s food and bar scene. He grew up in Appalachia, moved to Portland, and joined Big Biotch as one more excuse to jump into something new with the community here. Q also has a podcast called Gays of Our Wives. They Bought Portland’s Iconic Gay Bar | Slightly Unhinged with Jon & Chris

Jon and Chris, the new co-owners of CC Slaughters, are here, and this one is very Portland, very queer, and very full circle. Justin sits down with the husbands behind the next chapter of one of Portland’s most recognizable LGBTQ+ nightlife spaces to talk about how they took over CC’s, why keeping it going mattered, and what they want the space to become. Jon is a Taiwanese-American manufacturing engineer at Intel by day and co-owner of CC Slaughters by night. Chris is a Virginia native, Marine Corps combat veteran, social work professional, maker, gamer, and co-owner of CC’s. Together, they bring a mix of care, community, service, creativity, and just enough chaos to keep a nightclub alive. They talk about meeting in Los Angeles, surviving long distance and COVID, building a life together, taking over CC’s, supporting local performers, listening to the community, sponsoring nonprofits and queer sports teams, keeping nightlife accessible, and why Portland needs more queer spaces. They also share what is coming for CC’s, including renovations, community events, the Rainbow Room, the one-year anniversary of their ownership, and their bigger vision for the future of queer nightlife in Portland. And then Justin puts their marriage to the test with Not So Newlywed, because what is love if not celebrity crushes, stolen food, karaoke at the Eagle, lube fountain ideas, and deciding who would make a better drag queen? About Jon & Chris Jon and Chris are the co-owners of CC Slaughters in Portland. Jon works at Intel as a manufacturing engineer and brings a love of music, community, and inclusive nightlife to CC’s. As a Taiwanese-American who grew up feeling like he never quite fit in, he is passionate about creating a place where people can come together, have fun, and be themselves. Chris is a Virginia native, Marine Corps combat veteran, social work professional, woodworker, gamer, graphic design experimenter, and mountain trail explorer. His background is rooted in service, creativity, and care. Together, Jon and Chris are helping lead CC Slaughters into a new era while honoring the bar’s history and the Portland LGBTQ+ community that made it iconic. Connect with CC Slaughters CC’s always has something coming up, from drag shows and dance nights to fundraisers, themed parties, and community events. Check their website for the current lineup. Gracie Sledge on Chosen Family, Minneapolis & Sibling Chaos | Slightly Unhinged

Gracie Sledge came all the way from Minneapolis, and that's only the beginning. This week on Slightly Unhinged, Justin sits down with his sister-in-law, longtime supporter, and Minneapolis correspondent for an episode that starts with reality TV, friendship, getting older, and being in your “f**k it” era, then opens into a much deeper conversation about community, advocacy, chosen family, and what it means to keep caring when the world feels completely unwell. Gracie talks about growing up in Minneapolis, living in Nashville for grad school, working in nonprofits, and finding purpose in her role with the ACLU of Minnesota. She shares what Pride means to her, why Twin Cities Pride has become such an important part of her work, and how the queer community in Minneapolis continues to show up for each other in ways people outside the city do not always get to see. They also talk about entering your 30s, outgrowing friendships, rebuilding your circle, protecting your peace, loving reality TV like it is cinema, and learning that not everyone gets to come with you into the next version of your life. And then Daniel Pavis joins the episode, because one Pavis was not enough. The family web gets explained, sibling chaos takes over, and we find out who was the favorite child, who traumatized the parents, who would survive reality TV, and why there may or may not still be photos of a full childhood Britney Spears performance somewhere. It is heartfelt. It is messy. It is very family. It is very Season 2. About Gracie Sledge Gracie Sledge is a Minneapolis native, nonprofit professional, and Development Operations Specialist at the ACLU of Minnesota. She has a graduate degree in nonprofit leadership and works in events and community engagement, including helping plan the ACLU of Minnesota’s participation in Twin Cities Pride. She joins Slightly Unhinged as Justin’s guest, sister-in-law, longtime supporter, and full family-chaos correspondent. In this episode, Gracie brings heart, humor, reality TV references, Minneapolis pride, nonprofit brain, and a very clear “f**k it” era. Mentioned in This Episode ACLU of Minnesota https://www.aclu-mn.org/ Twin Cities Pride https://tcpride.org/ Pride Cultural Arts Center https://tcpride.org/pride-cultural-arts-center/ Rainbow Wardrobe https://tcpride.org/rainbow-wardrobe/ Haven Watch https://havenwatch.org/ The Smitten Kitten https://smittenkittenonline.com/ In This Episode Gracie Sledge comes to Portland from Minneapolis Season 2 family chaos continues Gracie’s Minneapolis roots and Nashville grad school era working in nonprofits and supporting the ACLU of Minnesota Twin Cities Pride and very efficient parade logistics reclaiming the things you loved as a kid entering your 30s and caring a lot less reality TV as actual cinema outgrowing friendships and protecting your peace chosen family, birthday trips, and intentional community Minneapolis after 2020 George Floyd Square, mutual aid, and community care the queer and arts community in Minneapolis Rainbow Wardrobe and gender-affirming support Daniel Pavis joins for sibling chaos the family web, bonus siblings, and leftover DNA who traumatized the parents who would survive reality TV and a childhood Britney Spears performance that deserves archival recovery Production Credit Produced by Action Jackson Productions, the team that keeps saying “sure, let’s make this episode bigger” and then has to figure out how to fit family trauma, Minneapolis civic grief, reality TV, and a sibling death match into one edit. Season 2 remains better lit and emotionally unsafe in the most entertaining way.
