Hitchhiker's Guide to AI Governance

Bruce Mullan

This is the Hitchhiker’s Guide to AI Governance, hosted by Bruce Mullan (who is mostly harmless). The Australian AI Governance Standard contains 42 statements, so in this podcast, of course, we'll discuss life, the universe and everything related to AI Governance. Each episode, we’ll be talking with the people who are actually trying to create, govern and use AI:  - policymakers and regulators wrestling with rapidly changing technology,  - AI vendors disrupting every aspect of our lives to make things easier, - researchers and ethicists asking how to align powerful systems with human values,  - industry leaders navigating safety, competition, and responsibility, and - civil society voices making sure we don’t forget the humans in the loop. Along the way, we’ll collect insights, and maybe a few cautionary tales, from guests on the front lines of AI governance around the galaxy. Episode 5 Jacinta Whelan - AI is the opportunity of a lifetime to design the career you want

Welcome to "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to AI Governance", the podcast for anyone trying to make sense of intelligent machines, messy politics, and everything in between.   Don’t panic.   In this episode I picked up Jacinta Whelan. Jacinta is the eminently successful lead Partner at Watermark Search Melbourne.   Jacinta specialises in placing seasoned C-Suite professionals in organisations for specific missions rather than permanent roles. Jacinta talks about AI as the opportunity of a lifetime, it all depends on how you look at it:   AI adoption for older workers is primarily an attitude, not an age thing  Leaders cannot outsource their AI understanding - they require hands-on engagement with AI tools and workflows.  AI is reshaping work by automating routine tasks, allowing us humans to focus on higher-value work Organisations are moving toward “human + agent” operating models  Functional business leaders (HR, marketing, finance, procurement, etc.) are becoming increasingly responsible for AI adoption within their own domains, rather than leaving AI solely to IT teams.  Change management is emerging as one of the biggest barriers to AI adoption.  Continuous learning and staying current with AI developments is now essential.  Recruitment and talent management are evolving rapidly. Despite fears around AI disruption the future is bright. AI is another major technological shift that can augment human capability if guided with strong governance, ethics, and human judgment. Episode 3 Neil Butler - Reinventing Change Management for the AI era

Welcome to "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to AI Governance", the podcast for anyone trying to make sense of intelligent machines, messy politics, and everything in between.   Don’t panic.  Today I speak with Neil Butler from Untypical, a boutique change management consulting practice. Neil has been delivery change for over 30 years across Australia and believes most of the way organisations do change is too process driven. We need stronger change leaders, less artefacts and a relentless focus on the outcomes we want to enable lasting change.   Neil shares his philosophy on why change has to change, to better prepare organisations for the AI era. Neil brings to life these interesting topics: How every company will transition to AI but only a handful will get the outcomes they want out of itWhy change leadership is more important than a change management processWhy an over-reliance on AI orchestrating change will get you into troubleHuman engagement is now more important than communicationsWhy his generation (over 50+) are best placed to manage the AI transition  Learn more about Neil Neil Butler on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/neilabutler Change change website: Change Change | The Art of Transformagination Change change the book: https://changechange.au/book/   Hitchhiker’s Guide to AI Governance Hosted by AI Governance Partner, Bruce Mullan, who partners with organisations to help them confidently adopt the Australian AI governance standard.  To learn more about what we do, visit our website:  www.aigovernancepartners.com.au If you enjoyed this episode, please be sure to give us a rating and follow us for more episodes.

Episode 2 Ambrion AI - AI Governance must be built in, not added on

Welcome to "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to AI Governance" — the podcast for anyone trying to make sense of intelligent machines, messy politics, and everything in between.   But don’t panic.  Today we speak with John Webb-O'Rourke and Shane McCarthy from Ambrion AI, an Irish intelligence company purpose built for the AI era.    In this lively conversation, John and Shane share their starkly different AI Governance journeys, describe the state of AI governance transition in Ireland and the EU, share their recent AI successes along with some lamentable flaws of well-known AI tools. I found these topics thoroughly interesting: Why you should hire people aged 55+ to lead your AI transition and adoptionWhy you should personally use AI every dayWhy you can't trust any large language model even if the AI says "trust me".How AI tools can now hack into a system better than a human canWhy AI systems and their governance needs to be built together but in parallel with your existing traditional systems (which will eventually be taken over)How agentic AI governance should exactly mimic real world management controlsHow AI capability overhang and AI adoption influences competitive advantageAnd why you can't bring a horse to a Formula 1 race.
