Radio Base Camp

Steve di Costanzo, WPKN

Radio Base Camp with Steve di Costanzo is focused on new releases and old gems across many genres but it is heavy on psych, garage, indie, funk and soul, Afro-beats, and world sounds from Jamaica to Morocco. I am particularly interested in playing under-the-radar artists and cult bands The show’s name has to do with my love of mountains, trekking, and climbing. I associate an expedition “base camp” with the similar joy that music brings into my life.

SPECIAL Radio Base Camp: Germaine Valentine Interviews Tony Fletcher

Germaine Valentine interviews Tony Fletcher Born in 1964, by age 13, he started his own music magazine titled Jamming! in which he landed an interview with Pete Townshend when he was just 14 years old. By 17, he scored an interview with Paul McCartney AND was running an independent record label with Paul Weller from The Jam, also called Jamming!Fletcher's an author of 12 books, the majority of which are biographies of musicians, in which his book “Dear Boy: The Life of Keith Moon” earned him the title of best selling author. His current literary offering is “Pow! When UK Punk Went Pop 1980-1984” Moon: The Life & Death Of A Rock Legend: (this is the title of the book in the USA) I went to see Tony while he was on his UK book tour. One of his stops was at The Engine Room in North Shields. Past listeners of my guest spots know that my husband, who passed away back in 2021, is Hilton Valentine, guitarist from The Animals, and North Shields is his home town and therefore, my 2nd home. Listening to his talk, I started hearing all the connections we had. He had interactions with Mickie Most’s son at RAK Studios which Mickie Most started and was the producer for The Animals. He was a presenter on The Tube, a music show on Tyne Tees Television. The music show there in the 60s was called The Rehearsal Room in which The Animals were featured. I was invited to the Blue Plaque unveiling for The Tube. We both saw Echo & The Bunnymen at the Royal Albert Hall in July 1983. At the end of his talk that evening, I told him about WPKN and asked if he’d like to come on and have a chat about his new book.
