Which Way for Israel? | Lahav Harkov

Israel votes today in its first general election since October 7th — and election day here is a national holiday, with millions of Israelis heading to the polls. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is fighting to remain in office, with former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot and former prime minister Naftali Bennett leading the challenge from the opposition. The final polls put Eisenkot’s Yashar and Netanyahu’s Likud neck and neck at the top — but neither political bloc has a clear path to the 61 seats needed to form a government. Polls close at ten tonight, when we’ll get the first exit polls, with the actual count continuing through the night. Misgav Senior Fellow and Jewish Insider’s Senior Political Correspondent Lahav Harkov tells us what is motivating Israelis to vote and what we should be watching out for Watch now for your fast, fact-based Middle East briefing. Israel Will Remain Ferocious Whoever Wins | David M. Weinberg

As Israelis prepare to vote in a tightly contested election, Misgav’s David M. Weinberg argues that the country’s new, more aggressive security doctrine will remain unchanged, whoever becomes prime minister. Despite bitter political divisions, he says Israelis are increasingly united on the need to confront Iran, Hamas and other regional threats. It’s the final day of campaigning in Israel, with neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition assured of a parliamentary majority. President Donald Trump has renewed his endorsement of Netanyahu, while opposition frontrunner Gadi Eisenkot has accused the prime minister of being prepared to stop at nothing to stay in power. Israel faces two diplomatic setbacks after elections in Brazil and Serbia. President Lula da Silva has won re-election, dashing hopes of restoring relations with Jerusalem, while the defeat of Aleksandar Vučić raises questions about Serbia’s crucial defence partnership with Israel. Defence Minister Israel Katz has denied reports of a rift between Netanyahu and the military over a possible strike on Iran, insisting Israel has no intention of launching an attack before tomorrow’s election. Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan are heading to Tehran for talks aimed at averting another confrontation between Iran and the United States, as President Trump threatens further military action and Tehran warns of a stronger response. An Emirati Woman Leading the UN? | Dalia Ziada

The UAE has nominated senior diplomat Lana Nusseibeh to become the next UN Secretary-General. Dalia Ziada, Egyptian scholar and Washington Director at ISGAP, explains why her candidacy matters — particularly for Arab and Middle Eastern women — and what an Emirati at the helm of the UN could mean for Israel and the wider region. President Trump says “something will happen with Iran, one way or another” fairly soon, as the US reduces its military presence in the region and evacuates non-essential personnel from its embassy in Saudi Arabia. Two people have been killed and eight wounded in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in eastern Saudi Arabia, while two more were killed in a separate drone strike on an oil field. Maritime intelligence firm Kpler says Iran may have exhausted the crude held aboard its shadow fleet after selling the remaining stocks to China earlier this month. Israel’s election campaign has taken a bitter turn, with Defense Minister Israel Katz blaming opposition leaders for undermining security warnings and Yair Lapid accusing the government of politicising national security. Israeli military officials have told Washington that Hamas has no intention of disarming and is rebuilding its forces for a possible return to full-scale war. And Thailand has taken delivery of an Israeli-made anti-drone system, with Israel Weapon Industries saying several other Southeast Asian countries are also interested. Did Israel Win the War but Lose the World? | Andrew Fox, Henry Jackson Society

Just one week before Israel’s election, Andrew Fox, Senior Fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, assesses Israel’s position after two years of war. Hamas has been severely weakened, Hezbollah is largely quiet, Iran is contained for now and the Houthis are preoccupied with Saudi Arabia. But has Israel’s military success come at the cost of its international standing? US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made an unannounced visit to Israel, meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a southern airbase amid discussions over renewed military action against Iran. Netanyahu says he opposes the arrest of ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers and promises a new conscription law after the election, as Haredi parties threaten to boycott any coalition that fails to address their demands for military exemptions. Israeli and Lebanese representatives are resuming negotiations in Florida, as the IDF accuses the Lebanese army of failing to dismantle a Hezbollah weapons site and tipping off the group about enforcement operations. Saudi Arabia has postponed its flagship investment conference, known as “Davos in the Desert”, until next year, amid continuing Houthi attacks and growing security concerns among international investors. And Israel is launching a new military space division, with Defence Minister Israel Katz unveiling what he calls Israel’s own “Star Wars” programme, aimed at making the country a global military and technological power.
