Ep 23 Psychological Bid Engineering: Winning the Head and the Gut

Most engineering firms lose bids they were technically better placed to win — and blame the price. I saw the real reason firsthand inside an international engineering and automation business, and it showed up from two directions at once. Marketing built beautiful, story-led materials that landed perfectly with the people who made them, and with almost nobody else. The engineers built dense, spec-heavy content that spoke fluently to the analytical evaluator on the buying committee and to nobody else in the room. Both teams were genuinely good at their jobs. Neither had built for the room the bid was actually walking into. This episode is for BD leads, engineers and technical directors who write and submit tenders. I unpack what I call psychological bid engineering — designing a bid to earn two different kinds of yes at once: the logical yes a spec sheet earns, and the gut yes a stakeholder's trust earns. I walk through the stakeholder engagement board that maps exactly who's on the committee and what each of them needs, the only three things worth deliberately mirroring for each of them, the DISC-calibrated way to actually structure the document section by section, the two-tender tactic that lets you win either way, and why getting into the room before the spec is even written is the highest-leverage move most bid teams never make. If you've ever watched a technically superior submission lose to a technically inferior one and assumed it came down to price, this one's for you.
