Ryan McGee: Finding His Voice, Marty & McGee, and a Side of State Fair Food

Ryan McGee has a voice and a storytelling style all his own. Today, we get into the story behind both. The ESPN writer and co-host of Marty & McGee joins me for a conversation about how he and Marty Smith got started, their shared background in motorsports, and the road that brought them to one of the most recognizable partnerships in college sports. I wanted to know how a guy with a Southern accent and a background behind the scenes as a producer found his way into writing and, eventually, in front of the microphone. How did Ryan find his voice? And how did he build a career around being himself? We also talk about what makes Marty & McGee work, the personalities behind the show, and the experiences that shaped them along the way. 🍯 A quick word from AR’s Hot Honey Sweet heat belongs at your tailgate. Whether you’re putting it on pizza, wings, barbecue, or your next kitchen experiment, give AR’s Hot Honey a try. Use code SHOWPONY15 for 15% off your order. Thanks to AR’s for supporting Show Pony Media! Then we get into SEC football, Ryan’s experiences with SEC Nation so far this season, and what he’s seen while spending his Saturdays around the league. Of course, we preview Texas–Oklahoma, a rivalry with an atmosphere that deserves its own conversation. And when you’re heading to the State Fair of Texas, football is only part of the assignment. I ask Ryan what he’s most looking forward to eating at a fair famous for its food. Come for the football conversation. Stay for the appetite. 🪑 Make yourself comfortable with 4Topps Your game-day setup deserves a great seat. Laura Rutledge on College Football + Congressman Mark Walker on the Fight to Fix College Sports

This is one of those episodes where we get to hit college sports from two completely different angles. First, Laura Rutledge joins Show Pony Live. Laura has become one of the most recognizable faces in sports television through her work with ESPN, NFL Live and SEC Nation, and we get into the college football season, the biggest stories around the sport and what she is seeing as we move deeper into the fall. Then we turn from what is happening on the field to a fight that could dramatically change what happens off it. Former Congressman Mark Walker joins me to discuss the Protect College Sports Act and where college athletics goes from here. The timing couldn’t be better. The legislation just passed the U.S. Senate 77–22 and would establish a federal framework covering major issues including NIL, revenue sharing, athlete protections and the structure of college athletics. It now moves to the House. (Reuters) Walker has a unique perspective on this entire debate. Years before NIL became the defining issue it is today, he introduced federal legislation dealing with college athletes’ ability to profit from their name, image and likeness. So what does this new legislation actually mean? What does it get right? What are the concerns? And are we finally getting closer to a sustainable model for college sports? We get into all of it. Two conversations. Two very different perspectives. One sport undergoing enormous change. This is Show Pony Live. 🎙️ LISTEN: Show Pony Live is available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. 📺 WATCH: Subscribe to Show Pony Media on YouTube for the full show, interviews and clips. ✍️ JOIN SHOW PONY MEDIA: Subscribe at ShowPonyMedia.com and get the podcast and my latest columns delivered directly to your inbox. Week 5 Preview, Grandpa George & My Northwestern Story

On this episode of Show Pony Live, we look ahead to a big Week 5 slate: * Mississippi State at Alabama * Ohio State at Iowa * Florida at Missouri * Penn State at Northwestern on Friday * Miami at Clemson I break down the matchups, what interests me most, and the storylines I’ll be watching as the weekend unfolds. Then, we get a little personal. Growing up in Vernon Hills, trips to Northwestern with Grandpa George helped make me the college football fan I am today. I still remember picking our games from that old wooden schedule sign outside Dyche Stadium. The place was rough around the edges, but to a kid who loved football, those Saturdays were everything. Northwestern’s new Ryan Field has me thinking about those days, how far the program has come, and the people who give our connection to this sport its meaning. Listen to the episode here, and read my full Northwestern story at ShowPonyMedia.com. Old Friends, SEC Football: The Show Pony Joins Braden Gall on 440 Sports

A Little Change of Plans: Joining Braden Gall Today Today’s college football conversation comes with a little change of scenery. Instead of doing a separate Show Pony Live, I joined my longtime friend Braden Gall on his SEC Football Live podcast. Trey Wallace is sick, so Braden asked if I could jump in. I told him absolutely—with one condition: let me share the show with you here, too. Braden and I go way back to our days working together at Rivals Radio. We were groomsmen in each other’s weddings, and we’ve spent more hours talking college football than either of us could possibly count. Getting together for a show is always fun. So today, you’re getting that conversation right here, including the Dylan Stewart mess and plenty more from around the SEC. Watch the episode above, and give Braden’s work a follow. He’s built a terrific collection of podcasts at 440 Sports, and there’s plenty to explore beyond this episode. 👉 Find and follow all 440 Sports shows on Apple Podcasts and watch 440 Sports on YouTube. Thanks to My Sponsors AR’s Hot Honey: Give your next pizza, wings, or game-day spread a little sweet heat. Visit ARsHotHoney.com and use SHOWPONY15 for 15% off. 4TOPPS: You’ve enjoyed their seating in stadiums across the country. Now bring that comfort home with the AIRdirondack and more from the same company. 👉 Explore 4TOPPS seating for your home. Thanks for watching and supporting Show Pony Media. Subscribe to ShowPonyMedia.com and share this episode with a college football friend! 4-Topps is the same quality seat you enjoy while cheering on your favorite team at your local college stadium. This is the REAL DEAL! Here is an example of their work at the University of Miami. It’s true, guys! Trust me, I have one. You can bring the same stadium-quality seating experience home! Oregon–USC Crossed a Line. Texas Survived and Simulated Using the Restroom, and Wisconsin Wins!

There are weekends when the scores tell the story. This was not one of them. Oregon beat USC 41–27, but the conversation after the game centered on the late hit that injured Ducks quarterback Dante Moore and the reaction that followed. USC has since suspended linebacker Desman Stephens II for one game. I get into the hit, the celebration and what accountability should look like when a player is hurt. Oregon also had to finish the game without its starting quarterback—and Dylan Raiola answered the call. Then there’s Texas. The Longhorns went into Knoxville and beat Tennessee 20–17. That’s a serious road win, even if Colin Simmons’ fake-pee penalty gave us one of the strangest talking points of the weekend. How much credit does Texas deserve for getting out of Neyland with a win, and how do you react to a penalty like that? And Wisconsin? Down 17 at No. 13 Penn State, the Badgers came back to win 24–20. We talk about what that comeback says about Wisconsin and why this one deserves more attention. That’s all on today’s Show Pony Live, along with the other moments you want to argue about. Watch the show on YouTube, or subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. If you have a take, leave it in the comments. I read them. Enjoying Show Pony Media? Mike Farrell on Week 4’s Biggest Games—and a $500 Recruiting Firestorm

Mike Farrell joins Show Pony Live to preview three Week 4 matchups: Texas vs. Tennessee, Ole Miss vs. Florida, and LSU vs. Texas A&M. We get into what each game could tell us about the SEC and which teams have the most to prove. Then we turn to a story that has people in recruiting circles talking. A major recruiting company announced it would charge prospects outside its top rankings $500 to be scouted and receive a profile. The rollout drew immediate criticism. Mike and I discuss the offer, the backlash, and the uncomfortable question underneath it: Are families being offered a real opportunity, or being asked to pay for the hope of one? Thanks to our sponsors 4Topps AIRdirondack: If you’ve ever sat in one of 4Topps’ premium stadium seats and wished you could bring that comfort home, this is your chair. The AIRdirondack brings their stadium seating know-how to your backyard: breathable mesh, serious comfort, and no cushions to haul inside when the weather turns. It’s built to stay outdoors with virtually no maintenance. Take a look at the AIRdirondack. AR’s Hot Honey: A little sweet heat makes game-day food better. Drizzle AR’s on pizza, chicken, sandwiches, or whatever’s coming off the grill. I’m a fan for a reason. Grab a bottle at ARsHotHoney.com and use code SHOWPONY15.
