    The 3 AM Inventory — Ep 14 | “A Benchmark”

    I grew up not knowing my father. Not gone entirely — he’d come around, I’d see him at his mother’s house, my grandmothers house. He was there, in that sense. But he was never present in the benchmarking of my life. And not because he didn’t want to be there…. I had to build that benchmark myself, later, piece by piece, without a model for it. If you had a father who set that benchmark for you, and he’s still around, call him. Say thank you. And if you built your own out of nothing, the way I did — you still gave your children something real. That doesn’t disappear because your child died. You haven’t failed as a father because your child died. Whatever you built for your children, they had it. That’s not up for negotiation. This room is built for men specifically, but also for thier families, men are often raised not to reach out. The door is already open here. Being strong doesn’t mean carrying it silently forever.     Things come up after your child has died. Pieces of a life that existed completely apart from you. That’s not a secret. It’s just the fact of being a separate person. Finding out something you didn’t know isn’t a mark against you as a father. It means your child was a whole person, and whole people have more in them than any one relationship can hold.     Year one, you’re moving. You don’t even realize how much. You’re in it, and it’s carrying you the same way a current carries anything. You’re not swimming. You’re just not drowning yet. Somewhere in year two, year three, the current stops carrying you. The calls stop. Everybody else’s life closes back up and keeps going. And you’re standing there in the quiet, looking at things without anything in your way. The milestones that land like an ambush, every time, no matter how many times you brace for it. But a lot is not gone, either. The people who stayed. The mornings you still get to wake up into. Those are real too. They exist right alongside the weight.     If they had lived, I would have lived. Not survived — lived. The world thinks a father mourns the years he had. He doesn’t. Those years are his, untouchable. What he mourns is the years he didn’t get — the ones that were promised, the ones that were coming. The 3 A.M. math is how old they’d be now, and how old he’d be with them. It’s who he would have become, still being their father. That man died too. No service. No casserole. No obituary for the life he doesn’t get to live. The world’s timeline is wrong. Grief doesn’t shrink with time — the unlived life grows.     Last episode, I spoke about the return — the record, the work, whatever gets you through the door. This one is about what made it worth it for me. Not a thing. Two men. But to understand who came, you have to understand where I learned what it means when somebody does. That starts in Balad, Iraq — a mortar, three days gone in an infirmary, and a decision that got made for me in an instant and that I’ve stood by ever since. Stop living for a future you’re not promised. Start living for the people in front of you — the ones who aren’t here yet, the ones who are, and the ones who are no longer here. That doctrine was born under fire. So was the brotherhood. Ed and Kurt. Neither of them my blood. Both of them there when my blood was not — Kurt at the visitation with his son, Ed driving from the other side of Virginia to stand in the silence at the funeral. The family that shares your blood may leave the room. But the men who shared the field know how to stand in the silence — because they’ve stood in worse silences with you before. If the people you expected to hold you have gone quiet, hear me: your frontline may not be who you thought it was. It may be the ones who already earned the right to your silence. Find them. Or let them find you. I got a scar I can talk about. So do they. That’s what a brotherhood is. So Ed, Kurt — thank you. You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re Vilomah. And now you’re counted.     The 3 AM Inventory — Ep 7 | "The Return"

    You went back. Back to work, back to a routine, back to a life that was still running even though something in it had stopped permanently. Nobody told you to. Nobody asked you to. You just did it. Because what else is there to do? There’s a moment — and if you’ve been in the field, you know exactly what I’m talking about — when the function comes back before you’re ready for it. The alarm goes off. You make the coffee. And somewhere in the middle of that, your body does the thing it always did. Without asking you. Without checking. You’re back. Nobody in that kitchen, nobody in that job, nobody in that building knows what it cost you to walk through that door. The world calls that progress. Moving forward. Getting better. I call it Adaptation. And there’s a difference. Progress means the weight is lifting. Adaptation means you learned how to carry it without showing the load. The return is not a straight line. You’ll be in a meeting, in a store, somewhere ordinary — and something will come in sideways. A smell. A song. A face in the crowd that has nothing to do with anything, except that something in your body recognized a frequency it was still listening for. And you’ll hold it right there. Run the inventory. Then walk back out. That is not weakness. That is what the return actually looks like from the inside. To the ones who didn’t come back — the ones who went somewhere else entirely — I understand that. I know what the return costs. I know what it asks. The ones still standing in the field are not here because it was easier for them. They’re here because they found something that made the return worth it. For me, that was the record. Building something that said: they existed, this happened, it’s real. Find your thing. Say their names. Talk about them when you feel like it. They are the records.
