Preview Episode 7: Righteous Anger and the Violence of Words

Is anger a problem? Joel and Tricia start by catching up on the Church of the Resurrection leadership conference in Kansas City: reclaiming the name of Jesus, and reclaiming our Wesleyan "vileness" by going to the margins. Then they get into a hard question: if anger is a natural human emotion, when does it become harmful, and what does holy anger look like?In this episode:• Fear → anger → hate → suffering. Yoda had it right, and MLK said it better: "Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."• Did Jesus actually hulk out at the temple? A closer reading of Mark 11 shows Jesus stopping exploitation, then teaching, with crowds spellbound. And it was about protecting the space where the marginalized prayed.• The time Jesus "rage healed." In Mark 3, Jesus is grieved by hardened hearts and heals anyway.• Righteous vs. unrighteous anger. Ask what the goal of your anger is. Righteous anger aims at restoration. Unrighteous anger aims to condemn, destroy, or humiliate someone into submission.• Speaking truth to power without perpetuating the cycle: why your motivation matters more than winning the argument.• Mobs, comment sections, and groupthink. How anger spreads in crowds, and how being "quick to listen, slow to anger" interrupts it.• Healing both ways. Healing when our anger has harmed others, and when others' anger has harmed us. Preview Episode 6: Emotionally Healthy Community

“Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother or sister. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who considers it unclean. If your brother or sister is distressed by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. So do not let your good be slandered. For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The one who serves Christ in this way is acceptable to God and has human approval. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong to make someone stumble by what you eat; it is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble., Hold the conviction that you have as your own before God. Blessed are those who do not condemn themselves because of what they approve. But those who have doubts are condemned if they eat because they do not act from faith, for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” - Romans 14:13-23 Hey everyone! This month we are kicking off a new series for the next few episodes where we are exploring what it means to build an emotionally healthy community. We focus a lot in this episode on the basics, and dig a little deeper into emotional resiliency both at a personal and a community level. To be an emotionally healthy community, we are reframing Romans 14, and looking at it through a community lens - not about masking who you are or being someone you’re not, but seeing each other as works of God, and not doing harm to them. When we embrace this kind of resiliency, we discovery that we can walk with people who we disagree with, or who aren’t at the same place in their own faith journey and sill love them - and they us. Preview Episode 5: Sabbath and Leadership

Four months ago now, we inadvertently started on our path to our first ‘series’. It kind of happened organically, where we wanted to talk about what an online church could be, and wound up talking about Worship and Community. This last week, we wrapped it up by talking about Leadership and Sabbath. This was a complicated set of topics. We (and the chat) wrestled with everything from the complexity of detangling leadership and authority and control to respecting the Jewish Sabbath as a deeply meaningful religious, cultural, and spiritual practice.
