Jamie Bristow: Why Inner Work Alone Can't Change the System

What if inner work, however transformative, is only one petal of the change we need? Jamie Bristow began in advertising, moved to Headspace, the app that teaches people to practice meditation, and then spent about eight years leading The Mindfulness Initiative, a UK think tank that supports politicians who practice mindfulness. More than 350 politicians took the course during his tenure, and many told him that it helped with self-regulation, relationships and even the quality of debate. In conversation with Dmitrij Achelrod, Jamie describes what that work achieved and where it ran out. Mindfulness was easy to dismiss as a niche, our culture has a blind spot about the inner dimension of systems, and individual change only goes so far inside institutions shaped over centuries. His answer is the image of a flower whose petals (psychology, culture, spirituality, deep beliefs, the social field) all need attention at once. He now teaches a postgraduate curriculum at Harvard with Professor Rebecca Henderson that joins inner work to political economy, ways of knowing and social movements, so that students who arrive feeling powerless can see their own role in the field. Dr. Steven C. Hayes: Pain Is Inevitable, Suffering Is Optional

Steven C. Hayes has spent fifty years asking a single question: what is the smallest set of psychological processes that does the most good for the most people in the most circumstances? His answer became Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), now supported by nearly 1,500 randomized trials, and the psychological flexibility model that underlies it. In this conversation with host Dmitrij Achelrod, Hayes explains why human language, the same capacity that lets us plan, connect, and create, also lets us manufacture psychological pain almost without limit. He walks through why pain is not optional but suffering is, unpacking the etymology of "suffering" itself to explain how identical pain can be carried lightly or crushingly. From there, the conversation moves through cognitive defusion, the "witnessing self" behind our thoughts, and the startling evidence that trauma can be carried epigenetically across generations, before landing on a World Health Organization trial in which a simple, cartoon-illustrated ACT self-help book cut the onset of new mental disorders by half among Syrian refugees who had survived war. Together, Hayes and Dmitrij explore what it actually means to take responsibility (not blame) for how we carry pain forward, why curiosity and willingness to learn from failure predict a thriving life better than almost anything else, and why, at nearly 78, Hayes still calls the work "exciting as hell." Nadjeschda Taranczewski: You Haven't Changed Until Your Behaviour Does

Nadjeschda Taranczewski, psychologist, master certified coach, and author of Conscious You: Become the Hero of Your Own Story, argues that most personal growth is mistaken for itself: people leave a retreat able to talk fluently about trust and vulnerability, and treat the fluency as the change. Her standard is stricter. Real development shows up specifically with the people who trigger you most, not in how well you can describe your own growth to a stranger. She introduces the standard, and the four elements behind it (self-reflection, self-compassion, ownership, and honest dialogue), through her own history with bulimia in her teens and twenties, then spends the rest of the conversation with host Christopher Kabakis reapplying it: to leadership shadow patterns (self-exploitation and narcissism, both traced to shame), to organisational culture (which she argues starts and ends with the person who is its "source"), and to money, which she treats as one of the most powerful and least examined entry points into personal trauma work. The Silent War for Your Attention: Why Today's Journalism is Designed to Divide Us: Stefan Schultz

What happens when the systems we rely on to understand the world are designed to capture our attention rather than help us make sense of it? In this conversation, Der Spiegel correspondent Stefan Schultz explores how algorithms, social media and increasingly AI are fragmenting our shared reality by rewarding outrage, fear and certainty. His response is a radically different vision of journalism: one that focuses not only on better information, but on the inner development of journalists themselves. Drawing on adult development theory and systemic thinking, Stefan explains how greater bias awareness, multi-perspectivity and emotional maturity could help journalists move beyond self-righteous expertise toward more nuanced, depolarising forms of sense-making. Together with Dmitrij Achelrod, he explores our “inner fake news,” the limits of objectivity, the role of cognitive bias, and why a more mature infosphere may require more mature people creating it. At its core, the episode asks: what if journalism could help society not just stay informed, but grow up? Philosophy Professor Christopher Bache: The Cosmology that Emerges in Deep Psychedelic States

Over 20 years and 73 high-dose LSD sessions, philosopher Christopher Bache systematically explored consciousness as a methodology - not for healing, but for understanding the deep structure of reality. What began as personal karmic work rapidly expanded into encounters with collective mind, archetypal reality, causal oneness, and finally the shattering clarity of diamond luminosity. These experiences, cross-validated against mystical traditions and cutting-edge consciousness science, produced a coherent cosmology in which the universe is a participatory, living intelligence. Bache argues we are now at the threshold where humanity must awaken into soul consciousness - not to escape the world, but to transform it. Dr. Schoss coaches the top 0.01% CEOs: What she learned about trust, vulnerability, and de-armoring

Dr. Stephanie Schoss has spent almost 15 years working closely with senior executives at the University of St. Gallen - often in small, confidential settings where CEOs say the things they would never admit in public. What she has observed challenges the image of the powerful, self-assured leader. Behind the polished exterior, many struggle with loneliness, fear of failure, self-doubt and the pressure to always appear in control. And paradoxically, Stephanie has found that even highly armoured executives often deeply welcome vulnerability once it feels safe enough to show it. The conversation explores what these moments reveal about trust, leadership and the hidden cost of always having to be the strong one. Why do leaders ask others to trust them while struggling to trust their own teams? Why does vulnerability so often create relief rather than weakness? And what happens when a CEO finally stops performing certainty and tells the “naked truth”? At its core, the episode asks: what can we learn about leadership from the things top CEOs only reveal when the armour comes off? 02:05 Introductions & Why A Full Life Can Still Feel Like Too Much 03:52 When Doing More May Be Holding You Back 07:16 Why You Need a Deeper Relationship With Yourself 09:55 The Leadership Belief Schoss Had to Unlearn 15:09 What a Crisis Can Teach You About How You Lead 18:48 Why You Can’t Build Trust Without the “We” 24:11 Why You Only Open Up When You Feel Truly Safe 33:39 Looking Weak Strengthens Your Leadership 35:49 The Culture Change Has to Start With You 39:43 Why the System Keeps Pulling You Back 41:57 You May Be Rewarding the Wrong Leadership Traits 43:58 The 50,000 Feet Perspective That Changes Everything 47:52 Why Your Biggest Insights Often Don’t Last 52:56 Can Altered States Change How You Lead? 56:35 You May Need a More Human Way to Lead 01:02:41 What to Remember When Leadership Feels Lonely 01:04:34 Outro Follow Stephanie Schoss: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanie-schoss-186201105/ Website - https://www.unisg.ch/de/universitaet/ueber-uns/organisation/detail/person-id/f344c3e4-0a2f-4fdf-828c-6627119c72e8/ Follow Inner Pioneers by Evolute Institute: Instagram - @evolute_instituteYouTube - @evoluteinstituteWebsite - https://evolute-institute.com/ Enjoyed the episode? Princeton Neuroscientist Graziano: “It’s Just a Matter of Time Before Machines Become Conscious"

What still stands between today’s AI and a machine that could become conscious? Princeton neuroscientist Michael Graziano argues that the answer may not be some mysterious essence unique to biological life. Current AI does not yet build self-models in the same way humans do, nor does it have the embodied systems that give rise to human emotion, but Graziano believes these capacities can be built - it’s merely a matter of time. Discover with us what would have to change for machines to develop something resembling subjective experience: from self-models and semantic understanding to embodiment, feelings and the ability to care. The conversation moves from today’s LLMs to simulated bodies, substrate independence and even mind uploading, opening up a provocative question: if the ingredients of consciousness can ultimately be reproduced, what - if anything - will remain uniquely human? 01:20 Peek Inside the Mind of a Princeton Neuroscientist Studying Consciousness 05:40 Consciousness Isn’t What You Think It Is 09:40 The Brain Model That Could Explain Conscious Awareness 14:28 How Graziano Became Obsessed With the Mystery of the Mind 18:48 Attention vs. Awareness: The Crucial Difference 23:29 Why Conscious Experience Feels So Real 27:51 What Still Stands Between Today’s AI and Consciousness? 40:59 Why Your Body May Be the Missing Ingredient 43:05 AI Can Understand - But Can It Ever Feel? 44:30 Prediction vs. Understanding: Is AI Really Thinking? 49:02 The Architecture That Separates Human Minds From Machines 54:07 Feelings, Consciousness and the “Magic” Your Brain Creates 01:01:51 Quantum Consciousness: Breakthrough Idea or Wrong Turn? 01:07:34 Mind Uploading and the Question of What Makes You “You” 01:09:40 What Understanding Consciousness Could Change About Your Life 01:13:08 Where Neuroscience Ends and Fiction Begins Follow Michael Graziano: Website - https://grazianolab.princeton.edu/ YouTube - @grazgorilla Inner Pioneers by Evolute Institute: Instagram - @evolute_institute YouTube - @evoluteinstitute Website - https://evolute-institute.com/ Enjoyed the episode?
