What is going on in Alberta?

Alberta's upcoming referendum on separation has captured national attention, but what is really driving support for greater autonomy and separatism? In this episode of Disagreeing Well, I sit down with Jared Wesley, professor of political science at the University of Alberta. Jared leads the Common Ground Initiative which studies Alberta separatism, western alienation, populism and political attitudes within Alberta, while also trying to figure out how to foster dialogue across differences. Drawing upon extensive public opinion research and community engagement, Jared explains why many Albertans are not nearly as polarized as stereotypes suggest. We discuss the gap between what Albertans personally believe and what they think their neighbours believe, how misconceptions can fuel division, and why feelings of alienation can become politically powerful even when they don't reflect majority opinion. Our conversation also examines the rise of Alberta separatism, the importance of dialogue across differences, and innovative efforts to help people move beyond caricatures and engage one another with greater understanding and respect. Along the way, Jared offers practical insights into what citizens, politicians, and the rest of Canada can do to reduce polarization and strengthen democracy. I hope you enjoy this thoughtful and timely conversation with Jared Wesley. Want to learn more?
