Ramses II, often called Ramses the Great, ruled Egypt for 66 years during the 19th Dynasty, a period of unprecedented wealth, monumental construction, and military expansion. From his early campaigns against the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh—the largest chariot battle in history—to the signing of the first known peace treaty, Ramses shaped the ancient Near East. This podcast explores the man behind the monuments: his 200-plus children, his beloved queen Nefertari, and his colossal building projects from Abu Simbel to the Ramesseum. Lucas and Luna unravel the propaganda of temple inscriptions, the controversies of his reign (did he really win at Kadesh?), and the daily life of Egyptian society under a pharaoh who proclaimed himself a god. They examine the decline that followed his death, the looting of his tomb, and his mummy's journey to a museum in Cairo. Why does Ramses still captivate us? Because his story is one of power, art, and the human drive for immortality—a legacy carved in stone that still speaks across millennia. #RamsesTheGreat #AncientEgypt #Pharaoh #19thDynasty #BattleOfKadesh #Nefertari #AbuSimbel #Hittites #EgyptianHistory #NewKingdom #PeaceTreaty #Ramesseum #Hieroglyphs #Sphinx #Pyramids #History #WorldHistory #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II and the Architect of His Own Legend

While previous episodes have explored Ramses II’s wars, his mummy, and his family, this episode uncovers the quiet machinery behind his immortality: the scribes who managed his image. We focus on Hori, the Royal Scribe and Chief of Works, whose administrative records reveal how Ramses systematically recycled monuments from earlier pharaohs like Seti I and Amenhotep III. By inscribing his own cartouches over older statues and rebuilding temples in Nubia, Ramses didn’t just conquer territory—he curated history itself. Lucas and Luna discuss the Ebers Papyrus references to royal workshops, the logistical scale of moving colossi, and how Hori’s ostraca provide a rare, unvarnished look at the bureaucratic engine that kept the Great King’s legend alive for millennia. #RamsesII #AncientEgypt #HoriScribe #PiRamesses #AbuSimbel #KarnakTemple #SetiI #AmenhotepIII #Cartouche #EgyptianBureaucracy #MonumentalReuse #Ostraca #RoyalScribe #Nubia #Luxor #Thebes #HistoryPodcast #FexingoHistory #AncientHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II's Shadow: The Rise of the Royal Scribes

While history remembers Ramses II for his monumental architecture and military campaigns, the true engine of his empire’s longevity was a quiet bureaucracy led by men like Paser and Khaemwaset. This episode explores how Ramses cultivated a class of literate administrators who managed everything from grain distribution to diplomatic correspondence across the ancient world. We trace the career of Paser, who rose from humble beginnings to become the Vizier and Overseer of the Treasury, effectively running the state while the Pharaoh focused on legacy-building. Through analysis of ostraca and administrative papyri, we see how this meritocratic shift stabilized Egypt during its golden age, allowing for unprecedented economic growth and cultural flourishing. Luna and Lucas discuss the daily realities of these scribes, their training at the House of Life, and the complex web of records that kept Per-Ramesses functioning. From the logistical nightmares of feeding a standing army to the delicate art of international diplomacy, this conversation reveals the unseen hands that wielded power behind the stone monuments. #RamsesII #AncientEgypt #PaserVizier #EgyptianBureaucracy #NewKingdom #Kemet #PerRamesses #Scribes #HouseOfLife #Ostraca #AncientHistory #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #Egyptology #Merneptah #Khensataui #AdministrativePapyri #NorthAfrica Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II's Grandson and the Crisis of Succession

By the twenty-fifth year of his reign, Ramses II had secured peace with the Hittites and stabilized Egypt’s borders, yet a different threat emerged from within his own dynasty. This episode explores the turbulent final years of Ramses II’s rule, focusing on the political instability caused by the premature deaths of his designated heirs and the rise of Merneptah. We examine the Judicial Papyrus of Turin, which reveals a shocking harem conspiracy involving Queen Tiye and Prince Pentawere, suggesting that court intrigue nearly toppled the throne. Lucas and Luna discuss how the aging pharaoh struggled to maintain control as his favorite sons died one by one, forcing him to name Merneptah, his thirteenth son, as successor at an advanced age. The conversation also touches on the economic strain of maintaining vast building projects like the Ramesseum while dealing with famine and civil unrest. Through the lens of recent archaeological findings and textual analysis, we uncover how a stable empire can unravel when succession is left to chance rather than clear policy, revealing the human vulnerability behind the golden mask of Ramses the Great. #RamsesII #Merneptah #EgyptianHistory #HaremConspiracy #JudicialPapyrusOfTurin #QueenTiye #Pentawere #AncientEgypt #Kemet #SuccessionCrisis #FexingoHistory #AncientEspionage #PiRamesses #Ramesseum #PharaohsOfEgypt #Archaeology #AncientIntrigue #HistoryPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II's Hidden Army: The Mercenary Revolution

While Ramses II is celebrated for his monumental architecture and the peace treaty with the Hittites, his true military innovation lay in transforming Egypt’s army from a conscripted peasant levy into a professional, multi-ethnic force. This episode explores how Ramses integrated defeated enemies—particularly the Sherden Sea Peoples—into his own ranks, turning former raiders into elite bodyguards and shock troops. We examine the archaeological evidence at Medinet Habu and Deir el-Bahari, where reliefs show these foreign mercenaries fighting alongside Egyptian soldiers under the pharaoh’s command. By analyzing the tactical shifts in the Battle of Kadesh and the subsequent integration of Libyan and Nubian auxiliaries, we uncover how Ramses built a standing army that secured Egypt’s borders not just through brute force, but through strategic diplomacy and the absorption of rival power. This shift marked a permanent change in ancient warfare, moving away from seasonal campaigns to year-round professional service. #RamsesII #AncientEgypt #Sherden #SeaPeoples #BattleOfKadesh #MedinetHabu #DeirElBahari #AncientMercenaries #EgyptianArmy #MilitaryHistory #Nubia #Libya #HittiteEmpire #AncientWarfare #Pharaoh #Kemet #HistoryPodcast #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II's Golden Age: Economy and Daily Life

We often focus on the wars and monuments of Ramses II, but his reign was equally defined by an unprecedented economic boom. This episode explores how the pharaoh turned conquest into commerce, establishing trade routes that brought gold from Nubia and lapis lazuli from Afghanistan to the heart of Kemet. We examine the administrative machinery behind this prosperity, including the role of the Vizier and the complex bureaucracy of Deir el-Medina, where workers were paid in grain and beer rather than coin. You will hear about the famous strike at Deir el-Medina, one of history’s first recorded labor disputes, and discover how the royal treasury managed everything from temple offerings to international diplomacy. By looking at papyri like the Turin Economic Papyrus, we see a society thriving on stability, skilled craftsmanship, and a sophisticated system of taxation and redistribution that made Ramses II’s long rule possible. #RamsesII #AncientEgypt #DeirElMedina #Kemet #NubianGold #LapisLazuli #Vizier #TurinEconomicPapyrus #LaborStrike #AncientBureaucracy #TradeRoutes #UsermaatreSetepenre #PiRamesses #MedinetHabu #Maat #AmunRe #History #FexingoHistory #Archaeology Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II's Secret Spies and the Art of Ancient Espionage

While we often think of Ramses II as a builder of temples and a warrior at Kadesh, his most potent weapon might have been his network of informants. This episode explores the intricate system of intelligence gathering that sustained the New Kingdom empire. We look at how Egyptian scribes monitored foreign courts, intercepted diplomatic correspondence, and used economic pressure as a form of soft power. From the border forts in Nubia to the royal court in Hatti, these unseen agents shaped the peace treaties and trade routes that defined Ramses' reign. We examine specific examples of how information was gathered, coded, and acted upon, revealing a side of the pharaoh that was less about stone monuments and more about shadowy maneuvering behind closed doors. #RamsesII #AncientEspionage #NewKingdomEgypt #HittiteEmpire #IntelligenceNetwork #DiplomaticHistory #KadeshPeaceTreaty #AncientInformants #PiRamesses #HattusiliIII #AncientCryptography #NubianForts #AncientTradeRoutes #PharaohPolitics #AncientScribes #ForeignPolicy #AncientMiddleEast #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Ramses II and the First Peace Treaty

In this episode of Fexingo History, Lucas and Luna explore the diplomatic masterpiece that ended centuries of conflict between Egypt and the Hittite Empire. We move beyond the battlefield of Kadesh to examine the silver treaty inscribed on clay tablets at Bogazkoy. The conversation details how Ramses II and Hattusili III forged a mutual defense pact, exchanged royal daughters, and established the first recorded international peace agreement in history. Listeners will discover the intricate politics of the Late Bronze Age, the role of the Hurrians as intermediaries, and how this alliance reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the ancient Near East. Ramses II's Daily Life: Food, Fashion, and Family

We often picture Ramses II as a statue or a warrior at Kadesh, but what did his daily existence actually look like? In this episode, we strip away the monumental stone and step into the vibrant, chaotic reality of Pi-Ramesses. We explore the diet of the New Kingdom elite, where luxury items like honey, wine, and imported olive oil were markers of status far more than gold. We examine the fashion of the royal court, from the intricate wigs worn by Queen Nefertari to the simple linen kilt that signaled Egyptian identity. We also dive into the domestic sphere, looking at how Ramses managed his vast household of dozens of wives and children, navigating the political intrigues of the harem not just through conspiracy, but through everyday diplomacy and inheritance laws.
