From the incense kingdoms of antiquity to the crucible of modern geopolitics, Yemen's history is a saga of resilience, trade, and tragedy. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through the Sabaean Kingdom, where the legendary Queen of Sheba may have ruled, and the Himyarite realm that embraced Judaism before Islam. Explore the rise of the Zaydi imams in the northern highlands, the Ottoman and British colonial entanglements, and the 1962 republican revolution that ended a millennium of imamate rule. The show delves into the Cold War proxy conflicts, the unification of North and South Yemen in 1990, and the fractured state that emerged in the 2011 Arab Spring. We examine the Houthi movement's origins in Zaydi revivalism, the Saudi-led intervention since 2015, and the humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded. Along the way, we discuss Yemeni coffee's global legacy from the port of Mocha, the unique architecture of Shibam and Sana'a, and the vibrant poetry and music that endure. This is not a linear narrative but a conversation that weighs ancient ingenuity against modern failure, asking what Yemen's past tells us about its possible futures. #YemenHistory #SabaeanKingdom #QueenOfSheba #Himyar #ZaydiImamate #OttomanYemen #BritishAden #YemenRevolution #NorthSouthYemen #HouthiMovement #SaudiLedIntervention #YemenWar #MochaCoffee #Shibam #Sanaa #History #WorldHistory #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

The Sanaa Manuscripts: Yemen’s Ancient Literary Heritage

While the Marib Dam and the Silk Road have dominated our recent conversations about Yemen, there is another layer of history preserved in the dark corners of the old city of Sanaa. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the discovery of the Sanaa Palace Manuscripts, a cache of over ten thousand Quranic fragments found in 1972. These parchments, radiocarbon dated to the very dawn of Islam, challenge long-held assumptions about the standardization of the Quranic text. We discuss how these early variants reveal a living, breathing process of textual transmission in the seventh century, involving different dialects, verse orders, and even minor theological nuances. This story shifts our focus from trade routes and architectural marvels to the intimate, handwritten preservation of faith by ordinary scribes in a besieged city. It is a story about ink, parchment, and the human desire to preserve meaning against the erosion of time. #SanaaManuscripts #YemenHistory #QuranicStudies #IslamicGoldenAge #PalaceManuscripts #RadiocarbonDating #UmayyadEra #AbdullahIbnMussud #SanaaOldCity #TextualCriticism #ArabicCalligraphy #MedievalLiterature #MiddleEastHistory #AncientParchment #SeventhCentury #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #Humanities Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

The Battle of Marib: Yemen's Ancient Water Wars

While previous episodes explored the Rasulid dynasty and the Silk Road, we turn our gaze to the hydraulic heart of ancient Arabia: the Marib Dam. This episode examines the Sabaean civilization’s engineering marvel that transformed the arid plateau into 'Arabia Felix.' We trace the dam’s construction across centuries, its role in fueling trade monopolies on frankincense and myrrh, and the catastrophic failure that led to the region’s depopulation. Through the lens of the Quranic Surah Saba and archaeological evidence from Wadi Dhanah, we reconstruct how water management defined power, politics, and eventual decline in one of the world’s oldest civilizations. #MaribDam #SabaeanKingdom #YemenHistory #AncientEngineering #ArabiaFelix #Almaqah #FrankincenseTrade #Qataban #Himyarite #SurahSaba #WadiDhanah #Adeneum #IncenseRoute #HydraulicCivilization #Desertification #FexingoHistory #MiddleEastHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Yemen's Forgotten Glass Blowers of the Silk Road

While the Rasulids built palaces and the Sogdians traded silk, a quieter industry thrived in the highlands of Yemen: glassmaking. This episode explores the archaeological evidence for a sophisticated local glass industry during the medieval period, centered around sites like Wadi Dhanah and the Tihama coast. We look at how Yemeni artisans developed unique cobalt-blue techniques that rivaled those of the Byzantines and Sassanians, creating vessels that traveled from Zanzibar to China. Lucas and Luna examine the chemical signatures found in ancient shards, the role of soda ash from coastal plants, and the surprising link between Yemeni glass and the luxury markets of the Islamic Caliphate. Discover how this transparent art form survived political upheaval and became a key export, connecting Yemen’s mountain villages to the wider world through light and color rather than just spice or stone. #YemenHistory #MedievalGlass #SilkRoadTrade #WadiDhanah #Tihama #CobaltBlue #SodaAsh #RasulidDynasty #ZaydiImamate #AdenHarbor #IslamicArt #Archaeology #AncientTech #MaribDam #Himyarite #SogdianTraders #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #MiddleEastHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

The Great Arab Revolt: Yemen's Role in WWI

While the world remembers Gallipoli and the Somme, a parallel drama unfolded in the Arabian Peninsula during World War I. This episode explores the complex political landscape of Ottoman-ruled Yemen, where local leaders navigated loyalty to Istanbul amidst rising Arab nationalist sentiments. We focus on the Great Arab Revolt, tracing how figures like Sharif Hussein bin Ali mobilized support across the Hejaz and into Yemen. The narrative highlights the strategic importance of Aden under British control, the failed Ottoman counter-offensives led by Cemal Pasha, and the eventual collapse of Ottoman authority in the region. Through letters, military dispatches, and accounts from tribal elders, we uncover how the promise of independence clashed with colonial interests, setting the stage for modern Yemeni statehood and enduring regional tensions. #GreatArabRevolt #OttomanYemen #SharifHussein #CemalPasha #AdenProtectorate #WorldWarIArabia #ArabNationalism #BritishEmpire #YemenHistory #MiddleEastHistory #HejazRailway #TribalAlliances #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #WWIPeriphery #Sanaa #Taiz #AliBinHussein Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

The British Exit from Aden: Yemen's Forgotten Colonial Retreat

While most histories of the Middle East focus on colonial expansion, Episode 255 explores one of the most chaotic and overlooked imperial retreats in modern history: the British departure from Aden in January 1967. We trace the final months of the Colony of Aden, examining how the withdrawal was accelerated by the escalating conflict with the National Liberation Front (NLF) and the complex web of alliances involving Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and local tribal leaders. The episode details the controversial 'Federation of South Arabia' plan, designed to create a pro-British buffer state against Nasser’s pan-Arabism, and why it ultimately collapsed under the weight of its own contradictions. You will hear about the role of Sir Michael Wright, the last governor, and the tense negotiations that led to the handover of power to the People's Republic of South Arabia. This is a story of geopolitical miscalculation, Cold War proxy dynamics, and the human cost of empire’s endgame, offering a fresh perspective on how modern Yemen’s political fragmentation began long before the current civil war. #YemenHistory #BritishEmpire #AdenColony #NationalLiberationFront #SouthArabia #ColdWarMiddleEast #ImperialRetreat #MichaelWright #GamalAbdelNasser #FederationOfSouthArabia #ColonialHistory #YemenCivilWar #MiddleEastPolitics #Decolonization #RedSeaTrade #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #AncientKingdoms Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

The Sogdian Ghosts of Yemen's Silk Road

For centuries, the highlands of Yemen were a destination for merchants traveling the Silk Road, but one group left behind an unexpected legacy. This episode explores the presence of Sogdian traders in Wadi Dhanah and the Tihama region during the Sassanian and Byzantine eras. We trace their journey from Samarkand and Bukhara to the Red Sea coast, examining how they navigated political tensions between empires while practicing Manichaeism and Nestorian Christianity. Lucas and Luna discuss the archaeological evidence of these communities, including inscriptions and artifacts that reveal a vibrant, multicultural trade hub. The conversation delves into the specific roles these Central Asian merchants played in connecting East and West, their interactions with local Himyarite and Zaydi populations, and the eventual fading of their distinct cultural footprint in Yemen. Through details about their religious practices, commercial networks, and daily lives, we uncover a hidden layer of Middle Eastern history that challenges our understanding of ancient globalization. #SogdianTraders #SilkRoadHistory #YemenHistory #WadiDhanah #Tihama #Manichaeism #NestorianChristianity #SassanianEmpire #ByzantineEmpire #HimyariteKingdom #Samarkand #Bukhara #AncientTradeRoutes #MiddleEastHistory #ArchaeologyYemen #CulturalExchange #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

Yemen's Ancient Water Management and the Marib Dam

While earlier episodes explored Yemen’s trade routes, kingdoms, and architectural marvels like Shibam, this episode turns to the hydraulic engineering that made them possible. We examine the Great Dam of Marib, constructed by the Sabaean kingdom around the 8th century BCE, and its sophisticated system of canals, sluice gates, and reservoirs that transformed the arid highlands into a fertile agricultural heartland. The narrative follows the dam’s construction, its role in sustaining the incense trade, and its eventual failure in the 7th century CE—a collapse so profound it is referenced in the Quran as a symbol of lost prosperity. Through archaeological evidence and ancient inscriptions, we reconstruct how the Sabaeans managed water scarcity on an industrial scale, creating one of the world’s earliest large-scale irrigation projects before political fragmentation and military sieges led to its destruction. #MaribDam #SabaeanKingdom #AncientEngineering #YemenHistory #WaterManagement #IncenseRoute #Himyarite #Qataban #ArabiaFelix #Archaeology #IslamicHistory #MiddleEastHistory #AncientCivilizations #HydraulicEngineering #TradeRoutes #FexingoHistory #History #Podcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

The Siege of Sanaa and the Ottoman Retreat

This episode explores the catastrophic failure of the Second Ottoman Empire’s expansion into Yemen between 1904 and 1911. While earlier episodes covered the Rasulid dynasty and ancient trade routes, we focus on the brutal campaign led by Mahmud SHawkat Pasha and his successor Halil Pasha against the Zaydi Imam Yahya Hamidaddin. We examine the siege of Sanaa, the resilience of tribal resistance, and the geopolitical pressure from the British in Aden that forced the Ottomans to withdraw. This story reveals how a modern imperial army was undone by terrain, supply lines, and unwavering local defiance, ultimately paving the way for an independent Yemeni state. #OttomanEmpire #YemenHistory #MahmudSHawkatPasha #YahyaHamidaddin #SiegeOfSanaa #ZaydiImamate #SecondTurkishOccupation #HalilPasha #BritishAden #ArabResistance #MiddleEastHistory #MilitaryHistory #Colonialism #TribalPolitics #FexingoHistory #History #Podcast #HistoricalNarrative Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
