    From Men Into Symbols

In this episode of The Case: Luigi Mangione, neuropsychologist and forensic expert witness Dr. Sanam Hafeez of “Comprehend the Mind” examines why Luigi Mangione has drawn such intense public interest, even after confessing to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. As anger toward the American healthcare system grows louder, Dr. Hafeez explains how the public transformed both men into symbols. Thompson came to represent power and a system many believe works against ordinary people, while Mangione became a symbol of the powerless, reflecting the frustrations felt toward insurance companies and healthcare as a whole. Bonus Episode — Looking ahead to the state trial

In this bonus episode of "The Case: Luigi Mangione," Erica Byfield and David Ushery discuss the latest in the state trial for the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In what could be the final public appearance for Mangione before his state trial begins, a judge laid out a few parameters and for what the trial will look like, including guidelines for who will be allowed inside the courthouse to cover the proceedings. The judge also ruled there will be an anonymous jury because of security concerns. The anonymity order is designed to protect jurors from possible harassment and intimidation efforts. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to several state charges. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Fascination with 'Assassination Culture'

In this episode of The Case: Luigi Mangione, we look into the widespread public fascination of Mangione and violence through what researchers call "assassination culture." "Assassination culture" is the growing acceptance of violent rhetoric where crimes are celebrated or seen as justified. Perpetrators can be viewed as heroes for ideological reasons or symbols of a broader cause. Whether it's the killing of someone over their political views or violence towards the CEO of a polarizing company, society is becoming more comfortable expressing support for hostility and aggression. NBC New York's Erica Byfield speaks with Dr. Chloe Carmichael, a clinical psychologist who says Mangione's relatable image has helped fuel public support, with some supporters seeing him as a heroic figure rather than an accused criminal. The Insurance Industry

In this episode The Case: Luigi Mangione, we look into the anger felt toward the healthcare industry in the United States — anger that prosecutors say fueled Mangione to allegedly target and gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. For many who don't deal their health insurance much beyond an annual physical or an occasional doctor's appointment, the level of anger and subsequent support for Mangione may have been jarring. NBC New York's Erica Byfield speaks with author Katherine Hempstead, who wrote the book "Uncovered: The Story of Insurance in America," to learn more about how the health insurance industry works and why so many feel like the system isn't working for them. Courtroom Approach

In this episode of The Case: Luigi Mangione, we look at exclusive reporting on plea discussions in the federal case against Luigi Mangione. Sources tell NBC New York that Mangione's attorneys and federal prosecutors held talks about a possible plea agreement ahead of a scheduled court hearing, though those negotiations ultimately fell apart. We examine what plea discussions could mean, why legal experts say they're common before trial, and how any federal agreement could affect the parallel state case. We also examine the possible strategy behind withdrawing a notice of a planned “extreme emotional disturbance.” NBC New York's Erica Byfield speaks with legal analyst Danny Cevallos about why the move matters, what it signals about the defense's approach, and how the focus may now be on securing the most favorable outcome possible if Mangione is convicted. Luigi Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. 'Dateline': A Killing in Midtown

Erica Byfield sits down with Lester Holt to discuss a new episode of “Dateline” taking an in-depth look at the execution-style murder that has caught worldwide attention. In the episode “A Killing in Midtown,” Holt talks with Mangione's yoga instructor from his time in Hawaii, as well as a former colleague and friend of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The episode reveals more about the hunt for Thompson's alleged killer, including details from a now-retired NYPD detective sergeant who shares how police zeroed in on video footage, tracked a man into Central Park, and how a 911 caller at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s called in the tip that led to Mangione's arrest.
