Sally Baker

Most fitness advice wasn't built for women over 40. Finally Honest is. Hosted by Sally Baker, online fat loss coach, this is the podcast for women who are done with diets that don't work, workouts that leave them exhausted, and advice that ignores everything that's changed in their 40s. Short, straight-talking episodes on fat loss, strength, mindset, and making progress that actually sticks.

How to actually stay consistent with fat loss over 40

If you've ever felt like you keep starting again, or that everyone else is getting results while you stay stuck, this episode is for you. The reason usually isn't what you think, and it's rarely what we blame it on. The two things women say most are "I don't have time" and "I just can't stay consistent". But the honest truth is the time is there, it's being spent elsewhere, and consistency isn't really about willpower. Both come back to the same root: not yet seeing yourself as the woman who does these things. This is about identity. So picture your version 2.0: the woman you could be in 6 to 12 months, lighter, stronger, more energy, more confident, showing up better for the people you love and at work. She already exists. The whole game is becoming her now, by doing what she does, because you act like her, and that's how you become her. I share the three phrases I come back to again and again: success leaves clues, act like her and you become her, and if you want a different result you have to do things differently. And it gets practical: fuelling with intention (calories, protein, macros), prep as your secret weapon, approaching weekends with the same diligence as weekdays, and moving more without needing big blocks of time. There's also a thought-provoking exercise I picked up from my own mentor: what are you prepared to give up to get your result, and just as importantly, what aren't you willing to give up? Get honest about the trade-offs and you'll see exactly where your progress has been hiding. And a word for anyone already doing well: as we head into autumn, don't take your foot off the gas. Weeks off don't pause your progress, they reverse it. This is about building a lifestyle that lasts, not a diet. Your one job this week: write down who your version 2.0 is and the actions she takes, then get honest about the trades you're willing (and not willing) to make. Start today, with the very next choice. If this resonated and you know you don't need another meal plan, you need someone in your corner helping it stick for good, that's exactly what I do with my 1-1 ladies. VO2 max: what it is and why it matters

We spend most of our time talking about strength, calories and macros, but there's one piece of the health picture we rarely mention: VO2 max. It's a measure of how well your heart, lungs and muscles work together, and it's the single best marker we have of your cardiovascular fitness. In this episode I explain what VO2 max actually is and why it matters. A higher number means everyday life feels easier: less huffing and puffing up the stairs and hills, more stamina, and more energy left for the rest of your day. Like muscle, it naturally declines with age, but the good news is you can train it. And alongside strength, protein and sleep, it completes the picture when it comes to ageing well. I also walk you through the Rockport walk test, a simple, well-established way to estimate your VO2 max with no special kit. You can do it on a treadmill, with a fitness tracker, or with nothing more than a flat one-mile route, your phone as a timer, and taking your pulse by hand. I cover the step by step, how to take your pulse, and the three numbers you'd need to work out your result: your time, your heart rate at the end, and your weight. I also talk through the normative data for women so you can see where a number sits. Then we get into how to improve it, all walking-based: adding hills or a treadmill incline, popping in some faster intervals, and simply walking with a bit more intention (no running for this test). Cycling and swimming are great options too if you fancy mixing it up. And a handy extra is to rate your effort out of 10 on the day, so if you retest you know whether your fitness improved or you just pushed harder. Whether you're joining a challenge or just want to understand your own fitness, this is an evergreen intro with everything you need to test and improve your VO2 max. If you know you don't need another meal plan, you need someone in your corner helping it stick for good, that's exactly what I do with my 1-1 ladies. Why muscle matters more after 40 (and how to protect it)

We lose muscle as we age, quietly, from our mid-30s onwards. Nobody warns you. You just feel a bit weaker, a bit softer, a bit more tired, and blame yourself or your age. But it isn't laziness or willpower. It's a biological process called sarcopenia, and the good news is that strength training reverses it at any age. In this episode I explain why muscle is your longevity insurance, and why it matters even more in your 40s. We get into why falling oestrogen speeds up muscle and bone loss around perimenopause, and why lifting is the single best lever you have. Why muscle is one of your most important organs for health, not just how you look, and how more muscle means a higher metabolism (I share how my own fat-loss calories went from 1600 to 1800 over three and a half years of strength training). Why strength protects your bones, your independence, and your future ability to carry the shopping and get up off the floor. Plus the body-composition bonus of dropping a dress size at the same weight, because muscle is denser than fat, and why that matters so much in the age of the fat-loss jab, where people risk losing muscle alongside fat. I also bust the two big myths (no, cardio alone isn't enough, and no, you won't get bulky), and finish with the practical how: what actually counts as strength training, and how to genuinely progress using range of motion, tempo, reps in reserve, and finally weight. Your one job this week: score your strength effort out of 10. Are you getting all your sessions in? Are you pushing yourself? And when did you last increase your weight or your reps? If you know you don't need another meal plan, you need someone in your corner helping it stick for good, that's exactly what I do with my 1-1 ladies.
