When the Evidence Isn’t Enough: Long Covid, Public Health & the Fight for Protection

What happens when the evidence is there, but those in power choose not to act on it? In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Long Covid Perspectives, Star is joined by Margo, a former UK university research manager whose experience of severe Long Covid has exposed the gap between what research tells us, what the public is told, and what governments and health systems actually do. Once highly active and healthy, Margo's life was transformed by Long Covid, forcing her into early retirement and leaving her with significant disability. But she brings more than lived experience to this conversation. She understands research, evidence and policy. Together, we ask a difficult question: How much evidence do we need before protecting people becomes a responsibility rather than a choice? Margo discusses the continued failure to communicate that Covid is airborne, the abandonment of effective precautions, and the growing disconnect between scientific evidence and public health policy. Years into the pandemic, research continues to document Covid's long-term effects across the body, yet much of this knowledge remains absent from public messaging and decision-making. In this episode we explore: • When evidence becomes inconvenient and policy fails to reflect emerging research.• Airborne transmission, respiratory protection and the importance of preventing reinfection.• How public health messaging has shaped public understanding of Covid.• The consequences of treating Covid as though it is over while vulnerable people are left behind.• The responsibilities of governments, healthcare systems, workplaces and schools to reduce exposure.• The experience of becoming both researcher and patient.• The dismissal of serious symptoms as psychological despite significant physical and neurological change.• The human impact of policy decisions on those living with Long Covid and disability. This conversation is about more than research papers and public policy. It is about who gets protected, whose illness is recognised, whose disability is accommodated, and whose suffering is allowed to become invisible. If the evidence exists, why are we still acting as though we don't know? Because the evidence isn't the problem. What we choose to do with it is.------------------------------------------------ About Long Covid Perspectives Podcast Long Covid Perspectives is a self-funded podcast sharing livedexperiences, research, and discussion around Covid-19, Long Covid, and related conditions. The Psychologist’s Betrayal: The "Same Old Tactics" on New Patients.

In this episode, NHS Mental Health Specialist Star is joined by Finlands Psychologist and author Päivi Montgomery (Sickand Tired) to expose the systemic machinery of medical denial. Post-Viral Gaslighting, Power, and the Fight for Truth Paivi reveals how the 70-year history of "psychologising" ME/CFS was a calculated move by governments and the insurance companies to avoid paying benefits—a "hoax" play-book that is now being used to dismiss the biological reality of Long Covid and other chronic health conditions, including Mental Health. In this deep-dive, we unpick the "nitty-gritty" of: The Clinical Blueprint: How 1970s "mass hysteria" labels created a culture of neglect that still plagues modern healthcare. The Power of "No": Why insurance companies and governments benefit from claiming physical illness is "all in your head". The Struggle for Support: Navigating the UK benefits system and the trauma of being told to "exercise" your way out of a cellular crisis. Societal Exhaustion: The psychological impact of "Dead Tired" parenting and the cold reality of a world that has stopped masking. Biological Evidence: Why the medical establishment ignores the physical evidence of brain damage and multi-systemic failure. This is more than a story of illness; it is a practitioner-led exposé on the politics of post-viral recovery and the urgent fight for patient truth. *****************************************About Long Covid Perspectives Podcast This is a self-produced and self-funded project dedicated to sharing lived experiences, insights, and research surrounding SARSCov2 and Long Covid. From the Gym to Care Plans: The Reality of Long Covid

In this episode, former NHS Mental Health Specialist Star talks to Naomi, a former Library Assistant and editor, whose life was decimated by COVID-19. Naomi went from running 5ks and lifting weights to being housebound and requiring a wheelchair for the shortest distances. "I was a gym rat at 25. Now, I need a carer to help me wash." We strip away the "warrior" clichés to discuss the brutal reality of becoming severely disabled in your mid-20s. In this episode, we expose: The Fitness Myth: Why being "fit and healthy" is no shield against a virus that attacks the autonomic nervous system. The Career Crash: The heartbreak of moving from a professional role in a library and research to a life defined by care plans and pacing. The Mobility Shift: Why accepting a wheelchair was both a "grief milestone" and a tool for freedom. The "Invisible" Struggle: How to handle a society that judges young disabled people because they "look fine" from the outside. Clinical Truths: Why grieving your "pre-sick" identity is the most important part of mental health recovery. This is the reality of the life-changing impact ofLong Covid on a generation told they were "low risk." **************************************************** About Long Covid Perspectives Podcast This is a self-produced and self-funded project dedicated to sharing lived experiences, insights, and research surrounding SARSCov2 and Long Covid. A Mother’s Grief & A Son’s Stolen Youth

A Mother’s Grief & A Son’s Stolen Youth In this profoundly moving episode, Star sits down with friend Rachel, a clinical nutritionist whose life—and the life of her teenage son, J—was destroyed by Long Covid. Both Rachel and J are unvaccinated, and their story offers a raw look at the devastation of a "double impact" household. While Rachel is a professional who understands the mechanics of the body, nothing prepared her for the emotional landscape of watching her vibrant, athletic son lose his youth to a chronic disability. This isn't just a story about physical symptoms; it’s about the quiet, heavy grief of a mother mourning her son's lost opportunities. Rachel opens up about their shared struggles, the "Long Covid Bingo" of health complications, and the heartbreaking decision to send her son away to the Caribbean just for his own survival. This is a mother speaking the truth about the questions that haunt her for J’s future. This episode explores: • The Loss of the "Before": Remembering J as the energetic primary school athlete before the 2022 collapse. • The Clinical Gaslighting: Navigating a system that told a professional mother she was "overthinking things" and "creating something out of nothing". • The Weight of Uncertainty: The painful reality of wondering if a teenage son will ever experience the milestones of adulthood—work, marriage, and independence. • The Physical Toll: A detailed look at symptoms like internal "bone itching," fine motor skill loss, and the "Long Covid bingo" of organ damage. • The Mother's Sacrifice: The agonising decision to send her child away for his own well-being because the UK's environment and healthcare system were failing him. Emotional, and deeply human insight at the collateral damage left behind when a virus steals a child’s future. **************************************************** About Long Covid Perspectives Podcast This is a self-produced and self-funded project dedicated to sharing lived experiences, insights, and research surrounding SARSCov2 and Long Covid.
