The Battle Within? Only Take What You Can Carry. Dream Bros #10

Does everyone have a battle within? Jake asked his kids that question just before recording this episode. One said, "Is that a trick question?" The other said no — and didn't think staying up at night mulling things over counted as a battle at all. That difference might be the whole point. In this episode, Jake (medical doctor, artist, dream practitioner from British Columbia) and Bill (retired plumber, currently a dream practitioner in Maine) dig into one of the most common and least talked about dream themes — conflict, battle, and war — and what those dreams are really trying to show us about the struggles we carry inside.Bill shares a dream of diffusing a bomb in a public square — and the stranger who showed up and simply said, "Hey Bill, want to go get a beer?" Jake brings a dream about ammunition on the ground, and what it revealed about learning to take only exactly what you need. Together they explore Bill's dream of archers holding the line against a horde, a dreamer gifted a scabbard for a sword they didn't know they had, and what it looks like to finally pick up a sword — and what it looks like to put it down. They talk about the inner battle and the outer one, why unresolved conflict within us gets projected out into the world, and what it looks like to finally pick up a sword — and what it looks like to put it down. Bill also references an idea he really loved: the notion that we're not just in a personal battle, but a battle of the imagination — a conversation that came out of an On Being interview between Krista Tippett and adrienne maree brown. See: [https://onbeing.org/programs/adrienne-maree-brown-on-radical-imagination-and-moving-towards-life/]In this episode:- Why battle and conflict dreams are more common than we admit- Bill's bomb-diffusing dream — and the invitation to just go get a beer- Jake's ammunition dream — and learning to take only what you need- What it means when your dream gifts you a scabbard- The battle of imagination — and why dreams give us space to play with it- Why asking for help can change everything — even in the middle of a fight- What happens when the inner battle gets projected out into the worldGot a dream you've been sitting with? What Does It Mean When Your Dreams Get "Cheeky" With You? - Dream Bros #9

What if the most important thing in a dream isn't the dramatic moment — but the quiet feeling of not being alone? In this episode, Jake (medical doctor, artist, dream practitioner from British Columbia) and Bill (retired plumber, currently a dream practitioner in Maine) dig into a beautiful, unusual dream — a moonlit cabin, a purple sky, trusted companions, ice skates, and a setting moon — and what it reveals about support, trust, and the feelings we've spent a lifetime learning to keep out. They explore why the feeling in a dream is almost always the most important place to start, how dreams show us support we don't yet know how to receive, and why recurring nightmares keep coming back — and what it actually takes to make them stop.Bill shares a story about a retreatant whose years-long recurring nightmare shifted after a single session of dream work. Jake reflects on dreamers who can see the support right in front of them — and still can't let it in. Together they talk about what it means to finally trust, why humor and lightness matter more than we think, and what becomes possible when we stop facing things alone. In this episode:Why the feeling in a dream matters more than the symbolsWhat it means when your dream is full of support — and you don't recognize itA purple sky, a setting moon, and what unfamiliar dreamscapes are trying to show youWhy recurring nightmares keep coming back — and what actually helpsThe difference between admitting trust is possible and actually letting it inLightness, humor, and learning not to assume everything is a fightWhat Bill and Jake are still figuring out — and why that's part of the practiceGot a dream you've been sitting with? #8 The Head Dream. The Superhero Dream. When Your Dreams Are Trying to Get You Out of Your Head.

Dreams about heads are more common than you might think. And they're usually trying to tell you something important. In this episode, Jake (medical doctor, artist, dream practitioner from British Columbia) and Bill (retired plumber, currently a dream practitioner in Maine) dig into two striking dream symbols — the head dream and the superhero dream — and what they reveal about overthinking, boundaries, and the parts of ourselves we've learned to push aside. Jake brings a real dream from someone he worked with, where a stranger's head was literally lodged in their space and wouldn't budge — and the surprising insight it unlocked about rumination, boundaries, and finally being done with something. Bill shares the first dream he ever worked with — which contained a vivid, almost spiritual experience of being in the water versus another place of trying to "save" two boys from drowning. Together they explore what it means to live too much in your head, why dreams pair the head dream and the superhero dream more often than you'd think, and how getting out of your head might just be the most important thing your dreams are asking of you. **In this episode:** - What a "head dream" is really trying to show you - The superhero dream — and what it means when you're doing instead of feeling - Bill's first dream ever — and how it changed everything - Why overthinking is often a boundary issue in disguise- Water, houses, and other symbols your dreams use to get your attention - What a doctor learned about saying "I don't know" — and why it matters* Got a dream you've been sitting with? I Was a Plumber Who Kept Dreaming He Was a Woman — Here's What That Taught Me (Dream Bros #7)

What does it mean when you show up as a different gender in your dream? That question — asked by a viewer in the comments — opened up one of our most personal conversations yet.In this episode, Bill (retired plumber - currently a dream practitioner in Maine) and Jake (medical doctor, artist, dream practitioner from British Columbia) explore gender through the lens of dreams: what it's like to step into a different version of yourself while you sleep, what that space makes possible, and why dreams seem completely uninterested in who you're supposed to be.Bill shares what it felt like — after a lifetime of not quite fitting the gender norm — to finally haver more space to just be himself. Jake reflects on dreams set in the 1700s where he's a woman, and what that opened up for him about past lives, identity, and judgment. Together they talk about binaries, labels, the courage it takes to be seen, and why the most loving thing you can do is make space for all of who you are.In this episode:- Why being another gender in a dream is more common than people think.- Bill's story around gender norms and learning to just be himself. - Jake's recurring dreams of being a woman in another era- The binary mind vs. the dreaming mind- Gender as a construct — and what dreams show us beyond it- How working with your own gender related dreams can unlock more love, creativity, and self-trust- Tenderness as a doorway when love feels too bigGot a dream you've been sitting with? Dreams, Darkness and Light Part 2 (Dream Bros Episode 6)

What if the dark places in your dreams aren't something to escape — but something to move toward? In this follow-up to their popular Darkness episode, Dr. Darren Jacob (family physician and dream worker, northern British Columbia) and Bill St. Cyr (dream worker, Northern Maine) go deeper into why avoiding emotional difficulty, dark dreams, and challenging life situations actually cuts us off from the fullness of life. In this episode they explore: Why darkness in dreams is rarely "evil" — and what it's really pointing toThe heart as a valve: how shutting down one part shuts down everythingInternal Family Systems (IFS) and "unattached burdens" in dream workHow to keep showing up through each new wave — with humor and communityListener questions on courage, vulnerability, and what dream images like doors, water, and planes actually meanQuotes from the Gospel of Thomas, Carl Jung, Madeleine L'Engle, and the Addams Family musicalWhether you're new to dream work or deep in the practice, Jake and Bill bring warmth, honesty, and hard-won wisdom to one of the most avoided conversations in mental health. Dream Bros #5: The Darkness Episode Pt 1 (Exploring the Upside Down)

In this conversation, William StCyr and Dr. Darren Jakubec delve into the complexities of darkness, dreams, and the shadow self. They explore how dreams can reveal repressed emotions and traumas, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging these feelings rather than suppressing them. The discussion draws parallels with the popular series 'Stranger Things,' using its themes of isolation, shame, and the journey through darkness to illustrate the healing power of community and connection. The speakers highlight the necessity of facing one's fears and the transformative potential of sharing experiences with others.Key Takeaways:Dreams can reveal repressed emotions and traumas.Acknowledging darkness is essential for healing.Isolation can exacerbate feelings of shame and darkness.Community support is crucial in facing difficult emotions.Art and storytelling help process complex feelings.Emotions like anger and grief are natural and should be expressed.Facing darkness can lead to personal growth and understanding.Dreams don't give us what we're not ready to confront. It's important to differentiate between good and bad feelings.Connection with others can alleviate feelings of loneliness. Dream Bros #4: Dreams and Language (Why Words Matter)

Ever try to explain a profound insight from your dreams and sound completely nuts? You're not alone. In this conversation, Bill and Darren explore why we struggle to find words for our inner experiences - and why that matters way more than you think. From scientific communication breakdowns to screaming nightmares while maintaining a "normal" life, they dig into how dreams help us develop language for experiences we couldn't express before. What we talk about:- Why "every time you change, you need a new language" (Sue Scavo's quote)- How to hold a day job AND have intense inner experiences- The difference between being hurt and being disabled- Why poets and scientists need each other- What happens when you can't find words for your own beauty- How language creates culture (and vice versa)- Being functional on the outside while falling apart on the insideKey insight: Dreams don't just give you symbols to decode - they give you a playground to develop new language for who you're becoming. And that language is how we actually connect with each other.Got questions about your own dreams? I Used to Ignore My Dreams (Here's What Changed)

In this episode, Jake asks Bill about his personal journey—how he went from ignoring his dreams entirely to dedicating his life to understanding them.Bill shares his story from 20 years of feeling lost to discovering the transformative power of working with his own dreams. Starting from a place where he'd never paid attention to his dreams, one intense dream experience cracked something open—leading him to leave behind a successful plumbing business and dedicate himself to understanding how dreams guide us back to ourselves. In this conversation, Bill and Jake talk about:How a single dream can shift everythingFinding meaning when you feel lostRecurring dreams and what they're showing youFear in your dreams (and what it's protecting)Isolation and why you don't have to figure this out aloneWhy your dreams matter more than expert interpretationThe difference between "fixing" and "listening"What it really means to trust yourselfThis is about the real-world impact of paying attention to what your inner world is showing you—and how that changes your outer world. Please feel free to comment or ask questions!

Stop Trying to Save People (What My Dreams Taught Me About Boundaries)

We both thought helping meant saving people. Bill became a therapist and activist. Darren became an emergency room doctor, trained in every resuscitation course available. We were drawn to professions where we could "save" others—all while our dreams were showing us something completely different: we couldn't save anyone, and that realization would change everything about how we show up in our relationships, our work, and our lives. In this conversation, we explore:How "saving" others often means we're avoiding ourselvesWhy your dreams reveal the boundaries you're not setting in waking lifeThe difference between being present for someone and trying to fix themHow learning to feel (not just think) changes everythingWhat it means to have an "inner world" and why it mattersThis isn't about dream interpretation or symbol dictionaries. It's about learning to trust your own relationship with your dreams—and discovering what they're trying to teach you about how you move through the world. You are the expert on your own dreams.ABOUT THIS CHANNELPeople of the Dream explores Reassociative Dreamwork—a practice that helps you reconnect with the parts of yourself that culture has taught you to ignore. Doctor and Dream Worker Discuss: When Dreams Meet Medicine

What happens when a family doctor who's practiced medicine for 30 years starts asking patients about their dreams? My friend Dr. Darren Jakubec joins me for a conversation about the intersection of dreams, trauma, and healing. Darren practices family medicine and anesthetics in northern Canada, and over the years he's found ways to weave dream work into his medical practice - sometimes in the emergency room, sometimes in his pain clinic. We explore how dreams can reveal what traditional medicine sometimes misses, why so many physical symptoms have roots in unprocessed trauma, and what it's like to practice medicine when you understand that healing involves more than just treating symptoms. In this conversation we discuss:- How Darren uses dreams with patients in medical settings- The connection between dissociation, trauma, and physical health- Why most people struggle to acknowledge emotional hardship- What happens when you approach dreams as guidance rather than puzzles to solve- The challenge of staying grounded in Western medicine while recognizing its limitationsThis isn't about rejecting medical care - it's about understanding that true healing often requires addressing the whole person, not just their physical symptoms.Want to work with your own dreams? We are developing online classes and coaching programs launching Fall 2025.
