Cassy Athena: From Brain Tumor Survivor to NBA's Go-To Photographer

This week on Out of the Fire with Alison Ball, Alison sits down with Los Angeles artist and acclaimed sports photographer Cassy Athena for a powerful conversation about surviving adversity, finding purpose, and turning a second chance at life into an extraordinary career. Cassy grew up with a passion for art, photography, and sports before pursuing all three in college. During her junior year, her life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor that required immediate surgery. The procedure left her with a metal plate in her skull, 25 staples, and nearly three months of recovery before she could walk and fully function again. The experience gave Cassy an entirely new perspective on life and inspired her to pursue the purpose she believed she had been given. After earning her degree in Art from California State University, Northridge and working as a Visual Effects Coordinator in the entertainment industry, Cassy ultimately committed herself to photography full time. Today, her work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, Billboard, NBA, Nike, Jordan Brand, Under Armour, Red Bull, SLAM, Fox Sports, and more. She has worked closely with some of the biggest athletes and entertainers in the world while helping shape their visual branding and marketing. Cassy's story is a reminder that tomorrow isn't promised, and sometimes the most difficult moments in our lives can become the catalyst for discovering exactly what we're meant to do. #photography #nba #sportsphotography #inspiration #motivation #purpose #resilience #successstory #secondchances #nevergiveup Learn more about your ad choices.
