THE CHECKUP: Men, Health, Faith & The Appointment You Keep Avoiding

Men will change the oil, check the tires, handle the business, provide for the family and make sure everybody else is good, but ask when they last went to the doctor and suddenly nobody remembers the year. In this episode of From Brother to Brother, Dr. Keith Wolaridge and Dr. Traco Matthews sit down with Dr. Hugh Beatty for a funny, honest and much-needed conversation about men, health, faith and why taking care of yourself is part of taking care of the people who depend on you. Dr. Beatty brings the perspective of a physician, entrepreneur and Black man serving the Bakersfield community as the brothers unpack the conversations men often avoid: preventive care, listening to your body, overcoming fear around the doctor's office, and the connection between physical, spiritual and emotional well-being. This episode is a reminder that stewarding your health is part of stewarding your purpose. Your family doesn't just need you providing. They need you present. Plus, hear why these conversations are leading into the 2nd Annual Kingdom Men of Action Conference on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 9:30 AM–1:30 PM—a gathering created to help men strengthen their faith, health, relationships, leadership and brotherhood. Make the appointment. Have the conversation. Take care of the man everybody else is counting on. Kingdom Men of Action: Building stronger men to build stronger communities. More Than an Athlete: Faith, Purpose, and the Recruiting Journey

Talent may open the door, but faith, character and preparation help a young man walk through it with purpose. In this episode of From Brother to Brother, Dr. Keith Wolaridge sits down with DeJon Jernagin of California Recruits for an honest and practical conversation about navigating today's college recruiting landscape. Drawing from four decades of experience, DeJon explains how recruiting has evolved, what star rankings really mean and how student-athletes can earn the attention of coaches and recruiters. The conversation explores what college programs evaluate beyond game statistics, including size, speed, athletic measurements, academics and social media presence. DeJon also discusses the importance of attending the right camps, receiving an honest assessment of an athlete's abilities and developing a recruiting plan early. For Black families guiding young men through this process, the episode offers an important reminder: the goal is bigger than recognition, a scholarship or a famous logo. Recruiting should help a young man find an environment where he can develop academically, athletically, spiritually and personally. DeJon also clarifies the difference between a prospect and a recruit, recruiting letters and legitimate offers, and preparation versus what he calls "Parental Recruiting Anxiety." Whether your student-athlete is beginning the journey or working to gain serious attention, this conversation offers families a clearer path forward—one grounded in faith, informed decisions and long-term purpose. Because the journey is about more than becoming a successful athlete. It is about helping a young man understand who he is, whose he is and what he is being prepared to become. It is not where an athlete starts—it is where he finishes. For more information:  Keith C.
