Hosted by five women with lived experience, Sporecast brings together real stories, professional perspectives, research, and honest conversation to explore the complicated realities surrounding indoor mold and water-damaged buildings. We aren’t here to sell one version of healing or tell you there’s only one right answer. We’re here to ask questions, bring different perspectives to the table, and make complicated information easier to understand. Because this conversation is bigger than any one practitioner, protocol, diagnosis, or personal story. Five hosts. Five perspectives. Real experience. Expert voices. One much-needed conversation. Guest Interview: Applfrittr's Mold Story

Welcome to Sporecast. What happens when mysterious health symptoms keep getting worse and eventually you begin to wonder whether your home could be part of the problem? In this episode, Baylie sits down with “Apple,” known online as Applfrittr, for a candid conversation about health struggles, homeownership, unexpected discoveries, and the search for answers that eventually changed the way she viewed her environment. Apple shares how symptoms she initially believed were allergies became part of a much bigger story. After moving into her home, she dealt with persistent skin and eye issues, allergy testing, concerning carbon monoxide levels, and a growing realization that she often felt different when she was away from the house. Then came discoveries she never expected including hidden files connected to the previous owners that raised even more questions about the history of the home. Apple also opens up about feeling alone while searching for answers, turning to TikTok for support, and how sharing her experience publicly connected her with people who understood what she was going through. In this episode, we talk about: Apple’s home-buying experience and the symptoms that followedDiscovering elevated carbon monoxide levels in the homeWhy she initially believed allergies were causing her symptomsPatch testing and the search for answersHow traveling to Cancun gave her an unexpected comparison between environmentsFinding hidden records connected to the home’s previous ownersHow TikTok became an unexpected source of information and community supportMold discoveries, leaks, inspections, and unanswered questionsWhy a home inspection may not uncover every potential problemThe emotional and financial realities of leaving or repairing a problematic homeNavigating medical care when environmental factors may be part of the pictureWhy Apple believes it is important to keep asking “why?”The need for greater awareness, accountability, and conversations around healthier homesThis conversation is about more than mold. It’s about what happens when your health changes, the answers aren’t obvious, and you have to keep investigating even when you’re exhausted from looking. Apple’s story is also a reminder of why sharing personal experiences matters. Sometimes hearing someone else’s story gives another person a place to begin asking questions of their own. Mold Remediation & Tenting

Welcome to Sporecast. What does mold remediation actually look like when you’re living through it and how do you know when your environment is truly working for your body again? In this episode, Kate and Dee talk candidly about the long, messy reality of remediation, the lessons they learned along the way, and why getting outside, even camping, became an unexpected part of understanding how their environments were affecting them. Kate shares how a bathroom leak eventually led to problems in the crawl space and ductwork, while Dee walks through a remediation that grew far beyond what she originally expected, involving multiple rooms, building materials, the subfloor, exterior wall, bathrooms, and HVAC system. In this episode, we talk about: • Why finding and correcting the original moisture or water-intrusion source matters • How Kate’s bathtub overflow led to damage beneath the home and concerns involving the ductwork • How Dee’s remediation expanded far beyond the original scope • The limitations of relying on a single test, particle count, or lab result to tell the entire story • Why getting multiple opinions before choosing a remediation company can be valuable • What to ask about containment, air scrubbing, PPE, controlled entry, and cleaning procedures • Kate’s experience with small-particle cleaning, including HEPA vacuuming, microfiber wiping, and repeated passes • Why the fastest remediation company isn’t necessarily the right remediation company • How camping and spending time outside gave Dee a clearer comparison between environments and how she felt in them • The emotional toll of remediation and learning to advocate for yourself and your family This conversation is about more than getting mold out of a building. It’s about learning what questions to ask, recognizing how complicated remediation can become, and rebuilding trust in yourself after an experience that may have made you question what you were seeing, feeling, and being told. Celebrities and Toxic Mold

Welcome to Sporecast. Mold doesn’t care how famous you are, how beautiful your home is, or how much money you have. In this episode, Baylie and Kate look at the celebrity mold stories that keep surfacing from Jenny McCarthy, Tori Spelling, Mikayla Matthews, Megan Fox, Ed McMahon, Ted and Shemane Nugent, Candace Owens, Gwyneth Paltrow, Erin Brockovich, Jordan Peterson, and more. Across very different stories, familiar themes show up again and again: hidden water damage, unexplained symptoms, multiple people in the same home getting sick, expensive remediation, lawsuits, and the challenge of proving exactly what caused what. We also talk about the difference between what is documented, what is claimed, and what is still debated because not every mold story carries the same level of evidence. Then we take a deep dive into one of Hollywood’s strangest mysteries: the death of Brittany Murphy. Brittany died in 2009 at age 32. Five months later, her husband Simon Monjack died in the same home, with pneumonia and severe anemia listed in both cases. Brittany’s mother later said she believed toxic mold in the house played a role, while the Los Angeles County coroner disputed that theory. We look at the official findings, the mold theory, the history of the house, its connection to Britney Spears, and why questions surrounding Brittany Murphy’s death are still being discussed today. In this episode: • Celebrity mold stories and what they have in common • Mold, water damage, lawsuits, remediation, and accountability • CIRS and broader mold-related health claims • Why celebrity stories can help normalize conversations around mold • Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack’s deaths • The toxic mold theory and what the official investigation found • Britney Spears’ connection to the house • Why separating facts, claims, and theories matters Sources & Further Listening: Research for this episode included publicly available interviews, news and legal reporting, and public statements, including reporting from People, Entertainment Weekly, Fox News, E! Online, Yahoo, Chicago Sun-Times, WGN, CBC, Robb Report, UnHerd, and others. For the Brittany Murphy deep dive, we also referenced Morbid and Disgraceland. The official cause of Brittany Murphy’s death was pneumonia, anemia, and multiple drug intoxication, and her death was ruled accidental. Mold as a contributing cause remains an unconfirmed theory. Malachi’s Message & The Hope Warrior Gala

Welcome to Sporecast In this special guest episode of Sporecast, Stacey sits down with Emily Rachal, founder of Malachi’s Message, to hear her family’s story of mold illness, hidden mold exposure, and the devastating impact their home environment had on their health—and how that experience ultimately became a mission to help others. Emily shares what happened when she and her family became seriously ill, the symptoms and changes they began noticing, and the moment they started questioning whether mold in their home could be playing a role. She reflects on what it was like to leave that environment and begin seeing signs that her family was coming back to themselves. Together, Stacey and Emily talk about the often confusing process of connecting unexplained health symptoms to an environmental exposure, trusting what you are seeing even when you do not have all the answers, and following the clues when something about your home—and your health—doesn’t feel right. Emily also shares the deeply personal and harrowing story behind the name Malachi’s Message, how her family’s experience with mold grew into advocacy for other families facing mold exposure and environmentally related illness, and the heart behind the Hope Warrior Gala. This is a conversation about mold illness, family, loss, advocacy, and surviving circumstances you never expected to face—and what it can look like to turn an incredibly painful chapter into purpose, hope, community, and support for others. Buyer’s Remorse: When Your Home Inspection Fails You

Welcome to Sporecast Buying a home is supposed to be exciting but what happens when you find out the home you thought was safe has problems your inspection never caught? In this episode, Dani and Tiffany share their experiences purchasing homes, navigating home inspections, and discovering issues after the fact that left them wondering: how did this get missed? They talk about the limitations of a traditional home inspection, the red flags they wish they had known to look for, and why buyers, especially those concerned about mold, and water damage may need to look beyond the standard inspection process. This isn’t about blaming every home inspector or expecting an inspection to uncover what can’t reasonably be seen. It’s about understanding what an inspection actually does, what it may not tell you, and becoming a more informed advocate for yourself before making one of the biggest purchases of your life. Because when it comes to water damage and mold, the things you don’t know to look for can sometimes become the most expensive things to discover later. Whether you’re currently house hunting, preparing to buy in the future, or dealing with buyer’s remorse of your own, we hope this conversation gives you questions to ask, things to look for, and permission to dig a little deeper before signing on the dotted line. ⸻ Connect with Sporecast 🎙️ Where real experience meets real conversation. When Survival Ends- Grief After Mold

Welcome to Sporecast After remediation is often the beginning of healing but it can also be the beginning of grief. In this episode, Baylie and Stacey have an honest conversation about what happens after survival mode. They discuss the grief that often follows mold illness- the loss of time, identity, relationships, memories, and the life you thought you would have. While physical healing can begin after remediation, the emotional healing often takes much longer. Together, they explore the complex process of adjusting to life after chronic illness, navigating resentment and forgiveness, coping with memory loss, grieving missed milestones with their children, and learning how to move forward when the world expects you to simply “be grateful” and move on. After spending months, or even years, focused on surviving, many people are surprised by the emotions that surface once they’re finally safe. This episode is a reminder that healing isn’t just physical, and grieving what you’ve lost doesn’t mean you’re not making progress. Wherever you are in your journey, we hope this conversation reminds you that it’s okay to grieve what mold took from you while still celebrating how far you’ve come. Both can exist at the same time.
