    Freya the Nordic Goddess

Modern Druid Podcast: Freya, the Lady of the Vanir Everybody knows Freya as the Norse goddess of love. That's maybe a tenth of her. She taught Odin his magic. She rides a chariot pulled by cats. She gets first pick of the warriors who die in battle, before Odin gets his share. And when she grieves, her tears turn to red gold. In this episode we look at what the old sources really say, written down in Iceland by Christians centuries after the fact. We also look at what Freya means for people now, from the Jungian and Druid side, and what she can teach us about turning loss into something worth having. Let me know what Freya means to you. The Celtic God Cernunos

In this episode, we trace the real evidence for Cernunnos, from the Pillar of the Boatmen in Paris to the silver Gundestrup cauldron sunk in a Danish bog. They explore his echoes in Irish and Welsh myth, the legend of Herne the Hunter, and how the modern Horned God took shape in the 20th century. They close with a Jungian and Druid reflection on the Lord of the Animals, and what it means to hold the wild within us without being ruled by it. The Drunken Mystics: Rumi, Hafiz & the Women Sufi Poets

The Drunken Mystics: Rumi, Hafiz & the Women Sufi Poets Eight centuries on, Rumi is one of the best-selling poets in America, and Hafiz shows up on bookmarks and wedding programs everywhere. So why do these medieval Persian mystics still speak so directly to modern hearts? In this solo episode of Modern Druid, Eric explores the ecstatic tradition of Sufi poetry. We start with Rumi and his life-altering friendship with Shams of Tabriz, move to the wine-soaked wisdom of Hafiz, and then turn to Rabia al-Basri, the 8th-century mystic who reshaped Sufism around pure, fearless love of the Divine. Along the way we look at what makes this poetry so beloved: the longing, the intoxication, and the idea of love itself as a spiritual path. We also look at a more complicated question. How much of the "Rumi" and "Hafiz" we read today is really theirs, and how much is modern reinvention?
