The Decline in Employees' Trust in Each Other

When companies talk about trust, the conversation usually centers on whether employees trust their leaders. But what happens when employees stop trusting each other? Edelman’s latest Trust at Work study found that trust in coworkers is falling faster than trust in managers or CEOs. That decline can undermine collaboration, weaken communication, and leave employees questioning their colleagues’ motives. Bad experiences with organizational change, including the introduction of AI, may be making matters worse. In this episode of On the Same Page, Shel and Mark explore why internal communicators should pay more attention to peer-to-peer trust. They discuss the everyday behaviors that build or erode trust, how managers shape relationships within their teams, and why candor matters when plans change or answers aren’t available. Along the way, they consider what communicators can measure, the behaviors they can reinforce, and where communication alone cannot solve the problem. Trust may appear in the company’s values, but keeping it alive takes more than putting the word on a wall. OTSP #9: The Uneven Introduction of AI to Employees

Companies are urging employees to adopt AI—but a software rollout, training session, or announcement doesn’t necessarily prepare people for changes to their work. When expectations keep shifting, and the destination remains uncertain, how can organizations build trust and help employees move forward? In episode 9 of On the Same Page, Shel and Mark explore AI adoption as a change management challenge and the role internal communicators should play. They discuss listening to employees, challenging leadership assumptions, and building a flexible approach to change—along with the gap between recognizing the need for change management skills and developing them. OTSP #8: Employee Engagement Matters. It Is Not the Goal.

Employee engagement is often treated as a goal — or worse, as a standalone annual survey score that needs to be nudged upward to placate the CEO. But engagement is not an end in itself. It is a condition that makes employees more likely to flag problems, share knowledge, question bad instructions, help colleagues, and contribute discretionary effort. Measuring it can be valuable, but only if an organization asks the right questions, receives honest answers, and acts on what it learns. In this episode of “On The Same Page,” Shel Holtz and Mark Dollins examine what employee engagement really means, the limitations of standardized surveys, and why disengagement is a leading indicator while turnover is a lagging one. They also explore the role communicators can play — without assuming responsibility for factors they cannot control — and why equipping managers to listen, provide feedback, and translate organizational messages for their teams may be one of Communication’s most effective contributions. OTSP #7: No Story? No Strategy.

A strategic narrative is a critical asset for any organization. It is the overarching story that explains where an organization came from, what it stands for, where it is going, and why that direction matters. Grounded in the organization’s purpose, values, vision, and strategy, it provides a common foundation for communication and helps employees and other stakeholders understand how they fit into the larger story and why they would want to be part of it. In this episode, Mark and Shel dig into strategic narratives, why they are so important, and why so many organizations seem to dismiss their importance. Continue Reading → The post OTSP #7: No Story? OTSP #6: One Size Fits Nobody -- A Better Way to Communicate Employee News

Communicating news to employees used to be a straightforward proposition: Publish the company newspaper or magazine, and give everyone the same information at the same time. Today, communicators can target news by audience, location, channel, source, and relevance. But the greater challenge is deciding what qualifies as news and what you hope employees will think,... Continue Reading → The post OTSP #6: One Size Fits Nobody — A Better Way to Communicate Employee News appeared first on FIR Podcast Network.

OTSP #5: Finding Your Leader's Voice for Internal Stakeholders

Veteran communications leader Mark Dollins joins "On The Same Page" as co-host. Mark and Shel address the "voice" leadership applies internally, as opposed to (or consistent with) the voice they employ with external stakeholders. Should it be the same? How different? What considerations drive the inside-the-company voice? And why does it matter? If It's Not Two-Way, It's Not Communication

Are employees suffering from survey fatigue? The question is asked often, frequently because someone high up in the organization doesn't want to hear what employees think. But if employees see change as a result of someone taking their feedback to heart, you can survey them all day long. If you're sending emails, publishing articles, and posting videos, but not asking employees for their perspectives, you're not communicating. You're just messaging. In this episode of On The Same Page, Steve and Shel discuss how to ensure employees' voices are heard in meaningful ways to drive engagement and business success -- and to avoid crises, since employees' voices can serve as the organization's smoke alarm.
