UNMUTED by The Lioness in the Darkness

The Lioness in the Darkness

UNMUTED by The Lioness in the Darkness is an audio space for the thoughts people were taught to swallow. Created by Brie Ellis, this series explores healing, emotional survival, internet trauma, identity, grief, boundaries, and the quiet realities many people carry silently through everyday life. Some episodes feel like late-night thoughts. Others feel like letters never sent. This is not a polished self-help show. It is a human one. Headphones recommended. Unmuted: Families | Nightmare Fuel: A Family Conversation

What happens when a nightmare ends... but the fear doesn't? When a child wakes up frightened, the grown-ups around them might offer a familiar reassurance: "It was just a dream." But what if the child already knows that? What if knowing something wasn't real doesn't make the fear disappear? In this episode of Unmuted: Families, we're meeting Nightmare Fuel, a villain who loves turning nighttime fears into daytime worries. Through conversations about nightmares, recurring dreams, frightening experiences, and the things children sometimes see online, we'll explore why fear can feel so powerful even when the danger isn't actually there. I'll also share a personal story from my childhood involving a terrifying Monster, an unfair game, and a Silly Voice that made asking for help feel impossible. Together, we'll explore what it means to take a child's fear seriously without making the nightmare more frightening. Hero Skill: FIND YOUR SAFE Digital Safety Skill: CLOSE. MOVE. TELL. Because superheroes deserve to know that being frightened doesn't make them weak, and asking for comfort doesn't make them any less brave. The nightmare wasn't real. The fear was. And that fear deserves kindness. Unmuted: Families is a family-focused series from The Lioness in the Darkness, creating space for the conversations that matter. Unmuted: Families | Silence Snake: A Family Conversation

“Don’t tell.” Sometimes those two words can carry an enormous amount of weight. In this episode of Unmuted: Families, we’re meeting one of the most serious villains in our series: Silence Snake. Silence Snake thrives when something is too frightening, confusing, embarrassing, painful, or dangerous to say out loud. Together, we're talking about what children can do when they are carrying something that needs to be told - including child sexual abuse, self-harm or suicidal thoughts, threats, unsafe situations, and times when someone else may be in danger. We'll talk about complicated body and brain reactions, why a child's reaction never determines whether harm was okay, unsafe secrets, and what to do when the first grown-up you tell doesn't listen. We'll also talk directly to grown-ups about what can happen when a child finally begins to speak - and why our response matters. Our Hero Skills are: RECOGNIZE. SPEAK. KEEP REACHING. A Note From Brie: This episode discusses child abuse, sexual abuse, self-harm, suicide, threats, and other serious safety concerns. Please consider listening privately before deciding whether it is appropriate for your family. I understand how vulnerable conversations like these are. I am not a therapist, and I work hard to respect that boundary with the children and families I work with. My role is not to diagnose, investigate, provide therapy, or become something I am not qualified to be. But child abuse and suicide are deeply important to me, and I believe they are topics I have a responsibility to discuss in some way with the voice I have gained. Many years ago, I made a promise to the younger version of myself: if I were ever blessed enough to have a community of families who trusted me, I would use that trust for good. Silence Snake is part of keeping that promise. As a fellow child sexual abuse survivor, I chose the words in this episode very carefully. I have listened to it multiple times because I needed to genuinely believe I had created a safe space for these conversations. That does not mean this episode will be right for every family. If you decide to skip Silence Snake and meet us again for a less intense episode, there are absolutely no hard feelings from me. Some conversations aren't right for every family to share together - or may not be right for your family right now. But if you believe your child could benefit from this conversation and you're nervous, I ask that you consider prescreening the episode yourself. Listen first. Decide for yourself. And if you choose to bring your child back afterward, I hope you'll trust both me and the younger version of me who desperately needed conversations like this one to exist. This episode matters enormously to me. Silence Snake and next week's villain are my two favorite episodes we've created in this series. Until next time, keep making space for the conversations that matter. Unmuted: Families is a family-focused series from The Lioness in the Darkness, creating space for the conversations that matter. Make Wise Choices: Your Child Is Not an AI Trend - Kids, Content & Consent Online

⚠️ ADULT LISTENERS ONLY: This episode is not intended for child listeners. It contains profanity and frank discussion of online predators, sexualized comments about minors, AI-generated images involving children, and child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Please listen without little ears around. Make Wise Choices: Your Child Is Not an AI Trend - Kids, Content & Consent Online We tell kids to make wise choices online all the time. But are the grown-ups doing the same? This episode started with a Facebook trend. Parents were uploading photos of their young children to AI and asking it to show what those children might look like ten years from now. Then I came across one post that stopped me. A very young girl had been transformed into an AI-generated teenager. Her mother publicly joked about how attractive her daughter would be someday. And then grown men started commenting. When other people raised concerns about predators, AI, and what can happen when children's images are placed online, the response from the mother was essentially: a predator could use any photo I've already posted, so why should this one matter? And suddenly I had a lot to say. For the next hour and a half, we're talking about kids becoming content, AI trends, digital consent, predators, CSAM, school photos, parental responsibility, and the contradictions children are watching adults create in real time. We're also talking about AI itself. Some people have embraced it. Some want absolutely nothing to do with it. And somewhere in the middle are people trying to figure out how to use a powerful technology responsibly without ignoring either its benefits or its risks. This isn't an anti-AI episode. It isn't a pro-AI episode. It's a make-wise-choices episode. Because we can't teach children that their images can be stolen, manipulated, sexualized, or used without their consent and then decide their discomfort doesn't matter when we want the picture, we paid for the school photos, or we want to participate in the trend. The internet our children are growing up in isn't hypothetical. Neither is AI. Neither are the people who misuse them. Our kids are listening to what we tell them about online safety. They're also watching what we do. Let's make sure those two things match. Until next time, keep making space for the conversations that matter.
