Personal Reflection: On Episode 5 | Relearning Ourselves

A Person to Understand, Not a Problem to Solve What if the patterns we judge most harshly are not evidence of failure, but information asking to be understood? This personal reflection holds what continued to linger after my conversation with Kai Stowers on neurodivergent leadership, masking, burnout, self-trust, and sustainable growth. Kai spoke thoughtfully about the short-term rewards and long-term exhaustion of self-criticism, the invisible effort beneath visible capability, and the cost of adapting so completely that we begin to lose access to ourselves. At the heart of this reflection is a shift from self-blame toward self-partnership. From asking: “What is wrong with me?” Toward asking: “What is this pattern trying to tell me?” What support do I need? What structure or rhythm might be more honest for the way I function? What would it mean to work with myself instead of against myself? Self-compassion is not passivity. Gentleness does not diminish ambition. And understanding ourselves more truthfully does not lower the standard for growth—it creates a healthier foundation from which growth can begin. Perhaps we are not always a problem to solve. Sometimes, we are a person waiting to be understood. 🎙️Ayesha’s Lens – Conversations That Carry Us Forward Topics: leadership, identity, resilience, personal growth, women in leadership, life transitions, courage, becoming, human leadership, legacy, leadership transitions

Episode 5: Relearning Ourselves | with Kai Stowers

Kai Stowers joins me for the final guest conversation of Season One of Ayesha’s Lens. Kai is an executive coach for ADHD and AuDHD leaders whose work helps people understand themselves more truthfully, lead more sustainably, and build ways of working that honor their minds, bodies, energy, and strengths. At the heart of this episode is a deeply human question: What happens when we have spent years misunderstanding how we function—and what becomes possible when self-criticism gives way to self-understanding? Together, we explore identity, masking, burnout, productivity, self-trust, and the private inner load that can exist beneath visible capability. Kai reflects on why self-compassion is not passivity, how behavioral patterns can become useful information rather than evidence of failure, and why sustainable growth often begins by treating our lives as thoughtful design experiments. We also consider what organizations can do differently when they replace narrow expectations with curiosity about the conditions that allow different forms of brilliance to emerge. This conversation is not about lowering standards or stepping away from growth. It is about building growth on a foundation of truth rather than shame—and learning to work with ourselves instead of against ourselves. I hope this episode offers more tenderness toward the parts of you that may have been misunderstood before they were fully known. 🎙️Ayesha’s Lens – Conversations That Carry Us Forward LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kai-stowers/ Official Website: https://www.kaistowers.com/ Topics: leadership, identity, resilience, personal growth, women in leadership, life transitions, courage, becoming, human leadership, legacy, leadership transitions Chapters 00:00 Opening 01:05 Identity and the Weight of Misunderstanding Ourselves 04:59 Self-criticism versus Self-Understanding 08:29 What it Means to Relearn Ourselves 10:59 Productivity and Neurodivergent Rhythms (Difference between ADHD & AuDHD) 16:02 The Invisible Inner Load of Leadership 20:07 Masking, Adaptation, and Self-Erasure 22:37 Rebuilding Self-Trust 25:41 Gentleness and Identity Reconstruction 28:56 Neurodivergent Leadership and Organizational culture 32:58 The Body, Nervous System, and Self-Understanding 36:16 Moving from Failure to Design 38:23 What to Carry Forward 40:46 Signature Closing Reflection 42:27 Episode Outro
