Build Your Team: From Needing Answers to Taking Ownership

Season 1 of The Applied Leader focused on building yourself. Season 2 moves to the next stage of the leadership journey: Build Your Team. Many leaders become successful because they are good at finding answers, solving problems and making decisions. But those same strengths can eventually limit the development of the people around them. The better you become at providing answers, the easier it is for everyone else to keep bringing their problems to you. What feels helpful and efficient today can gradually create dependence tomorrow. In this short introductory episode, Nick explains the central progression that will run through Season 2: moving team members from needing answers to taking ownership. That journey does not happen in a single step. People may progress from bringing problems, to offering observations, suggesting options, making recommendations and, eventually, taking ownership within clear boundaries. This is not about withdrawing leadership or leaving people unsupported. It is about providing better leadership: creating clarity, asking better questions, allowing people to think and making it safe for them to develop their judgement. Season 2 will explore questions including: Why does everything still come back to you? What are you teaching people when you solve every problem? How do you delegate responsibility rather than simply distribute tasks? When should you coach, and when should you decide? How do you build confidence without removing accountability? What happens when someone gets something wrong? How can you tell whether your team is genuinely developing? Before Season 2 begins, Nick leaves you with a simple challenge: The next time someone brings you a problem, notice your immediate response. Do you provide the answer, take the problem from them, or help them develop the thinking and confidence to work towards an answer of their own? The way you respond today is teaching your team what to do tomorrow. Most Leadership Learning Never Changes Anything

Every year, leaders read books, attend courses, listen to podcasts and fill notebooks with great ideas. Yet very little changes. Why? In this short gateway episode, I explore one of the biggest barriers to leadership growth—not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of application. Research has shown for well over a century that unless we deliberately revisit and use what we've learned, we quickly forget it. That explains why so much leadership development produces temporary inspiration but very little lasting change. If you've ever left a conference feeling motivated only to find yourself slipping back into old habits a few weeks later, this episode is for you. It's also the reason I created The Applied Leader - a subscriber podcast designed not just to provide more leadership ideas, but to help you apply them through practical episodes and downloadable worksheets. In this episode 00:00 Welcome and purpose 00:54 The learning trap 02:01 Why we forget 02:23 Knowledge vs execution 02:58 How The Applied Leader helps 03:36 Pick one lesson 04:16 Subscribe for practical tools 05:06 Final challenge Key Takeaways Knowledge alone rarely changes behaviour. Most leaders already know what they should be doing.Leadership growth comes through consistent application. One implemented idea is worth more than a hundred forgotten ones.Stop collecting leadership content and start applying it. The Standards You Say Matter… But Don’t Reinforce

Leaders often say standards matter. But leadership is not defined by what we say matters. It is defined by what we consistently reinforce. And whether intentional or not, people quickly learn what is truly tolerated. In this direct and challenging gateway episode of The Applied Leader, we explore: Why tolerated behaviour eventually becomes cultureThe hidden cost of inconsistent leadershipWhy many leaders avoid reinforcement and accountabilityThe difference between believing in standards and consistently upholding themHow emotional fatigue creates leadership inconsistencyWhy repeated tolerated behaviour teaches people what really mattersThe uncomfortable connection between leadership discomfort and self-protection This episode also explores the difference between leadership intention and leadership behaviour — and why awareness alone rarely creates meaningful change. The subscriber edition of The Applied Leader goes further with: Guided reflection processesApplied leadership frameworksPractical leadership toolsStructured thinking around standards, conversations, accountability, and behavioural consistencyDownloadable resources designed to help move insight into action Because leadership does not change through intention alone. It changes through consistently applied behaviour. -- To subscribe and access all episodes of The Applied Leader, use this link. 00:00 The Comforting Story 00:22 What You Tolerate Wins 01:21 Avoiding Discomfort 02:31 When Standards Slip 03:12 Patterns Create Culture 03:56 The Mirror Moment 04:31 From Insight to Action 05:19 Hard Questions for Leaders 06:02 Applied Leader Podcast 06:42 Final Standards Challenge #TheAppliedLeader #LeadershipDevelopment #LeadershipCulture #AppliedLeadership #LeadershipMindset #BehaviourChange #LeadershipGrowth#SelfLeadership

    The Decision You Keep Delaying

There is probably a decision you already know you need to make. And yet… it remains unresolved. Not because you lack intelligence. Not because you are incapable. And often not because you genuinely lack clarity. But because leadership decisions are rarely just logical. They are emotional. Relational. Psychological. And every unresolved decision quietly consumes energy in the background. In this gateway episode of The Applied Leader, we explore: Why delay is rarely neutralThe hidden emotional cost of unresolved decisionsWhy leaders often wait for certainty before movementThe connection between delayed decisions and emotional resistanceWhy intelligent leaders can still become stuck in overthinkingThe difference between reflection and avoidanceWhy movement matters more than perfect clarity This episode also introduces the philosophy behind The Applied Leader subscriber experience — helping leaders move beyond awareness into thoughtful action. Why Insight Alone Doesn’t Change Anything

There is no shortage of leadership insight. Books.Podcasts.Frameworks.Advice.Strategies.Perspectives. Most leaders already know far more than they consistently apply. So why do intelligent, experienced leaders still stay stuck? In this opening gateway episode of The Applied Leader, we explore the gap between awareness and action — and why leadership rarely changes through insight alone. Because recognising the issue is rarely the hardest part. The challenge is applying what we already know. In this episode: Why awareness and behavioural movement are not the same thingThe hidden comfort of “still thinking about it”Why many leaders delay action despite clarityThe difference between wanting change and wanting to changeWhy willingness matters more than perfect readinessHow The Applied Leader is designed differently from traditional leadership podcasts This is not simply about consuming more leadership content. It’s about applying what you already know. The subscriber edition of The Applied Leader goes further with: Guided leadership thinking sessionsPractical application frameworksReflection promptsDownloadable toolsStructured support for leadership decisions, conversations, and action Because insight alone changes very little. Applied insight changes outcomes. Full episodes of The Applied Leader are published on the 1st and 15th of each month.
