You Don’t Need a Reason | Elevate Within Roundtable

Sandy Davis and Claudia Cuevas, LMFT, dig into cultural conditioning, code-switching, and the courage to trust yourself without proof. You don't need a reason. That's the permission at the heart of this week's Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable, where host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, dig into the cultural conditioning thread that ran through Maiko Sakai's episode. Sandy and Claudia explore why so many women of color carry the duality of living between two cultures, the feeling of being “ni de aquí ni de allá,” neither fully here nor there and trace it back through generational conditioning, gender expectations, and immigrant experience. Claudia shares her own story as a first-generation Mexican American, and Sandy reflects on growing up between Black, Puerto Rican, and Italian heritage. They talk candidly about code-switching as both a survival skill and a quiet driver of burnout. Sandy shares a personal story about hair discrimination in investment banking, where Black women were not permitted to wear their hair naturally, and what changed for her after California's Crown Act passed in 2020. Claudia introduces a simple, practical tool: an ownership inventory for naming and integrating the dualities we carry, instead of being forced to choose one identity over another. They close on what it means to stop shrinking yourself to fit somebody else's mold. What You Will Hear in This Episode Why cultural conditioning shapes far more than career choices. The meaning behind “ni de aqui ni de alla” and what it's like to live between two cultures. Code-switching as both a superpower and a hidden driver of burnout. A personal story about hair discrimination in corporate America and the impact of the Crown Act. The difference between conforming to survive and staying authentic to change a system from within. A practical ownership inventory tool for integrating dual identities. ⭐ If this resonated, please leave a rating or review, it helps reach more women who need this conversation.  🎙️ ABOUT ELEVATE WITHIN Elevate Within is a podcast and community for high-achieving women navigating the messy middle — the space between who you were and who you're becoming. 🎧 SUBSCRIBE & NEVER MISS AN EPISODE  🎵 Spotify: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 🍎 Apple Podcasts: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis  ▶️ YouTube: Elevate Within Always  📻 Amazon Music: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 📻 iHeart Radio: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 📖 Substack: https://substack.com/@elevatewithin   ⭐ APPLE PODCAST LISTENERS If this resonated with you, a rating or review would mean everything. Cultural Conditioning & Identity | Maiko Sakai

Maiko Sakai left Japan at 17 with no proof it would work. She was told to stay in her lane in two countries. She left both. Maiko Sakai grew up in Japan in what she describes as a society of conformity where nobody should stick out, nobody should be different, and the pressure to fit the standard was never spoken aloud because it did not need to be. It was simply the atmosphere. And for Maiko, who was a late bloomer feeling perpetually behind, that atmosphere settled into beliefs she would carry for decades without stopping to question whether they were true.  At seventeen she left for the United States with no proof it would work. No family. No certainty. Just a pull she could not fully explain. She built a career in music licensing and entertainment finance, navigated H1B visas, and eventually took a role managing money for high net worth clients where her boss kept telling her she was out of scope. Stay in your lane. She had left Japan specifically to escape that instruction. She got her MBA and started her own consultancy. She has been building inside her own scope ever since. In this episode of Elevate Within’s Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming summer series, Maiko joins Sandy Davis to talk about the invisible beliefs shaped by cultural conditioning, what it costs when those beliefs run unchecked in the background, and the diagnostic framework work she now does to help other service providers uncover the patterns that are quietly shaping their decisions. What You Will Hear in This Episode How ambient cultural conditioning installs beliefs without ever saying them out loud and why those are the hardest ones to question. What it costs to build a career as an immigrant while a visa clock is always running in the background. Why being told to stay in her lane in two countries on two continents was the same instruction and what she did about it both times. How diagnostic framework design helps people see the invisible patterns shaping their decisions and behavior. Her closing message: you do not need a reason to follow a compulsion. The proof comes later.   Connect with Maiko Sakai  LinkedIn and Threads: search Maiko Sakai — DMs open ⭐ If this resonated, please leave a rating or review, it helps reach more women who need this conversation. Repackaging, Not Starting Over | Elevate Within Roundtable

Sandy Davis and Claudia Cuevas, LMFT, unpack underpricing, grief, and why a career pivot is never starting over. You're not starting over, you're repackaging. That's the reframe at the heart of this week's Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable, where host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, dig into the themes from Natalie Hoop's episode. Sandy and Claudia trace limiting beliefs back to their roots in family of origin and childhood conditioning around success, then unpack Natalie's story: 17 years in retail leadership, underpricing herself in her first fractional role, and being let go from her corporate job the week her mother died. They explore why women are expected to stay even-tempered through grief, and what it costs to push that grief aside to get back to performing. Claudia introduces the Life Wheel exercise, a tool she's used with executive clients to map out where they're really thriving versus where they're quietly sacrificing and why career so often scores a 10 while family life scores a 3. They close with a practical distinction any high achiever can use immediately: is this a should, or is this a want? What You Will Hear in This Episode - Why limiting beliefs trace back further than the corporate environment that triggers them. - Natalie's story of being let go the week her mother passed away. - The Life Wheel exercise and what it reveals about overworked professionals. - Underpricing yourself in your career and in your relationships. - The difference between living from should and living from want. - Quiet quitting as a boundary-setting practice, not a failure. Self-Worth, Pricing & Reinvention | Natalie Hoop

Natalie Hoop charged $64/hr on her first fractional contract. The woman she replaced charged $200. Here’s the self-worth story underneath that gap. When Natalie Hoop landed her first fractional COO contract after a layoff, she charged $64 an hour. Three weeks later she found out the woman she replaced had been charging $200. The client never blinked at either rate.  That gap was not a market problem. It was a worthiness problem built from 17 years of retail conditioning that told Natalie her value was tied to her output, that she needed to prove herself before getting paid, and that asking for what she was actually worth was a risk she was not allowed to take.  In this episode of Elevate Within’s Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming summer series, Natalie Hoop joins Sandy Davis for a conversation about what corporate culture installs in high-achieving women and what it takes to dismantle it. They talk about the layoff she never saw coming, the grief that cracked everything open, the moment Natalie called out Sandy’s own energy shift live on air, and the reframe that is already changing how women talk about pivoting.  Natalie is a fractional COO, business coach, and founder of the Fractional Launch Lab, a coaching program that helps experienced leaders build sustainable fractional consulting businesses without starting from scratch. What You Will Hear in This Episode The beliefs 17 years of retail conditioning installed and how they showed up as a $136 per hour undercharge. Why ChatGPT’s fractional rate data is wrong and what to use instead. How her mother’s death became the catalyst for finally asking what she actually wanted her life to look like. Why talking about what you do kills your client conversations and what to say instead. The Hostess cupcake repackaging metaphor and why pivoting is never starting over. What it looks like to take your full inventory of experience into a new direction rather than leaving it at the door. Fact Check Your Emotion | Elevate Within Roundtable

Fact check your emotion. That's the practical heart of this week's Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable, where host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, dig into the guilt thread that ran through Amanda Maloney's episode.  Sandy and Claudia explore why women carry guilt no matter what choice they make; work guilt, money guilt, vacation guilt, motherhood guilt and trace it back through generational and societal conditioning. Claudia explains why guilt functions so effectively as a tool of control: women are raised to stay attuned to emotion in a way men typically are not, which makes guilt an easy lever to pull, intentionally or not. Claudia walks through a real example of misreading a stranger's expression at a party, illustrating the gap between what we feel and what is actually true. Sandy shares a personal story from years ago about a moment at a red light, a man in a wheelchair, and a stranger who stopped to help him and the silence that followed as she realized how much her own environment had shaped her instinctive reaction.  Claudia introduces a simple, repeatable tool: the guilt versus regret question. They close with a direct conversation about what it actually means to give yourself permission to feel joy without guilt attached. What You Will Hear in This Episode Why guilt is a lose-lose battle no matter which choice a woman makes. The generational and societal roots of women's guilt, and why it functions as an effective form of control. A real example of separating an emotional reaction from the actual facts of a situation. A personal story about environment, instinct, and unexpected guilt. The guilt versus regret question, a practical daily tool for any decision. What it means to give yourself permission to feel joy without guilt attached. Motherhood, Burnout & Creating Joy | Amanda Maloney

Amanda Maloney wasn’t a CEO when she burned out. She was a mom in the carpool line who forgot she mattered too. Most burnout stories start in the corner office. Amanda Maloney's starts somewhere different, in the parking lot of a part-time job, in the kitchen at midnight trying to figure out the bills, at dinner with her best friends realizing she had quietly become someone she didn't recognize.  In this episode of Elevate Within's Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming summer series, Amanda joins Sandy Davis and Claudia Cuevas, LMFT to share how burnout crept in through the side door of ordinary life, motherhood, the 2008 financial crash, a pandemic that asked everything of her while nobody asked if she was okay. She names the guilt that fueled her burnout with total honesty: guilty when she worked, guilty when she didn't, guilty about wanting something for herself.  Amanda shares the Magnetic Method, her five-step framework for moving out of problem-solving mode and into creation, along with segment intending a simple practice that gives any heavy task a purpose beyond itself and makes it instantly lighter. She is candid that she hasn't arrived anywhere she is still in the messy middle, still building, still figuring it out and that living a life she loves was never about finishing. It was about starting now. What You Will Hear in This Episode How burnout can live quietly inside ordinary motherhood, not just executive life. The full guilt list many women carry without ever naming it out loud. The Magnetic Method and the shift from problem-solving into creation. Segment intending, a practice for making any heavy task feel lighter immediately. Why joy doesn’t require arrival, and what it means to create it now. Functional Depression | Elevate Within Roundtable

Sandy Davis and Claudia Cuevas, LMFT, unpack functional depression, burnout, and the body's warning signs. Functional depression. That's the term at the center of this week's Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable, where host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, dig into the themes from Blake Schofield's episode. Sandy and Claudia trace Blake's journey through 17 years of escalating physical symptoms, shingles at 28, a bulging disc, sciatic injections all while her career looked, on paper, like nothing but success. They unpack the question Blake asked herself that changed everything: are you willing to sacrifice your life for this career when they aren't willing to give you what you need? Claudia explains functional depression: the high-functioning version that doesn't look like collapse, but like a perfectly run household and a closed-door cry in the car. They discuss why burnout is now showing up in women in their 30s instead of their 50s, and Claudia closes with a practical, repeatable gratitude exercise designed to shift an overworked brain from logical to creative. What You Will Hear in This Episode - Why the body sends physical warning signs long before the emotional ones surface. - What functional depression actually looks like in high-achieving women. - The moment Blake cried crossing the stage to accept her own award. - Why burnout is now appearing in women in their 30s, not just their 50s. - A practical A-through-Z gratitude exercise for any high achiever. - Recognizing when a role no longer fits, and trusting that recognition. Survival Mode & High Achievers | Blake Schofield

Blake Schofield made millions for her company, shook hands with the C-suite, and realized in that exact moment: it wasn’t worth it. Blake Schofield was 32 years old, standing on a stage at JCPenney, shaking hands with the company’s C-suite. Her team had just finished as the number two buying team out of ninety in the entire organization, two years running. She sat back down and realized with total clarity: it wasn’t worth it. It took her eight more years to leave corporate.  In this episode of Elevate Within’s Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming summer series, Blake joins Sandy Davis for a conversation about what she calls the ride to breakdown, the pattern of changing companies hoping the next one will finally fix the exhaustion, only to discover that each cycle arrives faster and hits harder than the one before. She names survival mode exactly as it shows up in high-achieving women: not as visible crisis, but as exceptional capability. The woman everyone calls strong and responsible may simply be running a dysregulated nervous system that has learned to perform threat response as productivity.  Blake also shares the single question from a coach that finally broke an eight-year cycle, why ninety percent of what she once believed about success has been proven false, and her honest, nuanced perspective on where therapy helped her and where it fell short.  Blake is the founder of Impact with Ease, where she helps successful leaders who are drained, stuck, or uncertain get clarity on their next step without sacrificing their health, their income, or their family. What You Will Hear in This Episode The stage moment that revealed the gap between achievement and fulfillment. The ride to breakdown and why burnout cycles accelerate with each job change. How survival mode — fight, flight, fawn, and freeze — disguises itself as competence in high achievers. The coach’s question that finally interrupted an eight-year pattern. Why beliefs formed before age seven continue to run adult decisions without our awareness. Her honest take on therapy: valuable for awareness, not always sufficient for behavior change.
