Implementing Workplace Policies That Support Families

Eric Jones and David Franzonello walk through workplace policies they have experienced firsthand or helped craft, and how each one affects employees raising families. David traces parental leave across his career while Eric explains how Workforce PayHub made its leave fully paid, then both weigh hybrid schedules and unlimited PTO against what an employer can afford.  In This Episode: Why David took two weeks of a twelve-week parental leave benefit, and why he thinks one week plus flexibility serves most fathersWorkforce PayHub's paid leave: six weeks for a normal delivery, eight for a cesareanA hybrid schedule that phases in work-from-home days over an employee's first yearHow overtime rules limit flex time for hourly employees to a single workweek, and the pay-period fix Eric would like to see from the Department of LaborWhat happened when one organization offered unlimited PTO and employees ended up taking less time offResources Mentioned: Workforce PayHubContact Us workforcepayhub.com(517) 759-4026info@workforcepayhub.comChapters: 00:00: Welcome and Why Fewer Families Are Having Children04:28: Parental Leave Across David's Career10:05: When Long Leave Hurts a Sales Rep12:06: How Much Leave Fathers and Mothers Need15:57: Workforce PayHub's Paid Parental Leave Policy18:24: Hybrid Schedules and Flex Time23:45: Does Working From Home Hurt Productivity?28:32: Remote Work When Young Children Are Home33:30: Unlimited PTO vs. Defined Time Off40:08: Holiday Pay Without a Waiting Period41:32: Caregiver Support and Other Family-Friendly Benefits49:01: Four Tens During a Family Crisis and Mandatory OvertimeProduced by Saint Kolbe Studios

You Can Offer Health Insurance That Doesn't Violate Your Conscience

Bob Sankey of Novus United Catholic Benefits has spent thirty-five years in health insurance, and he says the biggest change he has seen is AI reading every employee on your census individually — prescription history, claims data, and social media posts included. Eric Jones gets into how that shows up at renewal, why competing quotes now come back nearly identical, and what it took for Workforce PayHub to move off an HRA onto a real group plan without funding anything it objects to. Sankey's blunt warning for any owner who has been handed a religious rider: in most cases it isn't real, and the only way to know is to audit the people administering your plan. In This Episode: ●     Why the quotes you collect at renewal all come back the same now. Carriers have largely moved to AI reviewing each person on the census individually, which Sankey says has made the market so transparent that nobody will undercut anyone. ●     A carrier will hand you a religious exemption rider and ask you to sign. Sankey says most are not real. ●     AI reviews every eligible employee, not every enrolled one. That includes the people on spousal coverage and the person on Medicare who will never join your plan, because open enrollment means the tool has to assume any of them could. ●     Remote patient monitoring, wearables, and digital twins — a virtual replica of a patient or an organ that lets a treatment be simulated before it is tried on the person? ●     The Church supports gene editing as treatment for disease and opposes embryo destruction and germline editing, which sounds clean until you try to trace where a given therapy's research came from. What a CPA Firm Actually Gets by Handing Payroll to Someone Else

Need help with payroll? Head to workforcepayhub.com Nearly all of Dave Franzonello's payroll business once came through referral partners rather than inbound calls. He and Eric Jones sit down with Aimee Supran, who now runs sales for Workforce PayHub, to work through how accountant and broker partnerships actually get built. They talk about what makes a CPA firm hand payroll off, why the revenue share is usually not the deciding factor, and what a business owner gains when their payroll provider and their accountant already talk to each other directly. In This Episode: Why a CPA firm that refers payroll out is usually not doing it for the revenue share, and what actually drives the decisionDave's food truck rule for prospecting: park where the customers already gather instead of driving up and down the streetThe dental practice CFO who won't let clients bring their own payroll provider, and the root canal analogy behind itWhat changes for a business owner when the accountant has direct access to payroll reports and the general ledger mappingThe accounting firm that had about 30 payroll clients when the conversation started, and what handing payroll off did for their growth Resources Mentioned: Workforce PayHubAimee Supran on LinkedInCaerusnet Chapters: 00:00: Introduction00:30: Meet Aimee Supran, the new face of sales at Workforce PayHub01:17: What kinds of partnerships matter in payroll02:37: The model where 99 percent of business came through referrals05:57: Ten solid referral partners and a givers gain mindset07:30: The food truck rule, park where people already gather09:59: A one-call close, and giving the CPA their own login11:30: The dental practice that won't let clients bring their own drill15:19: Coming out of a PEO and rebuilding it with trusted providers17:26: Why partnership sales demand a higher level of trust26:19: The firm that grew after handing payroll off37:13: Aimee's story and how to reach her Produced by Saint Kolbe Studios

Hiring Is Only Half the Risk: The Blind Spot Every Employer Has (But Doesn’t Think About)

Eric Jones and David Franzonello are joined by Will Montgomery of The Orsus Group, a nationwide background screening and corporate investigations firm, to examine what most employers never check: what happens to an employee's record after the pre-hire screen clears. Will explains how continuous criminal monitoring works, what a company policy and employee acknowledgement need to cover before rollout, and how organizations choose which offenses actually matter for the roles they are filling. Will offers some real-life examples of what continuous monitoring caught: a nonprofit president arrested for the same conduct his organization exists to fight, a hospital electrician convicted six months into a one-year contractor badge, and a CFO who moved more than $80,000 out of the books. In This Episode: ●       Why a clean pre-hire background check says nothing about what has happened since ●       How continuous criminal monitoring works, and what it does and does not track about an employee's life ●       What a monitoring policy and employee acknowledgement form need to include before rollout ●       How employers select which offenses get flagged based on the actual duties of the role ●       Where the real exposure sits for small businesses, and why most owners do not screen until something goes wrong Resources Mentioned: ●       The Orsus Group ●       Workforce PayHub Chapters: ●       00:00: Welcome and Introducing Will Montgomery ●       01:51: Inside The Orsus Group ●       03:44: How Continuous Monitoring Works ●       05:28: The Nonprofit President Arrested for Domestic Abuse ●       08:05: Privacy, Policy, and Employee Consent ●       11:17: The Hospital Contractor Nobody Rechecked ●       13:34: Choosing Which Offenses Get Flagged ●       15:07: Rolling Out Monitoring at an Existing Company ●       19:27: Corporate Investigations, Embezzlement, and Fictitious Employees ●       24:53: What Small Businesses Get Wrong About Screening ●       33:00: When an Employee Refuses to Be Monitored ●       34:28: Risk Exposure and Where to Reach Will Produced by Saint Kolbe Studios

What Building a Business Really Costs Your Family

Eric Jones and David Franzonello set the payroll talk aside and bring their wives, Amanda Jones and Kely Franzonello, to the mic for an honest look at what it takes to build a business and a career while raising a big Catholic family. They swap stories about January busy seasons, working from home with kids pounding on the office door, getting fired just weeks after learning a baby was on the way, and why the old advice still holds up: you'll never regret one more kid. In This Episode: Getting fired weeks after learning a baby was coming, a sales demo run from a hospital parking lot, and trusting God's timingWhy the busy season can turn a business owner's spouse into "a single mom in January," and how the family absorbs the crunchThe biggest misconception about big families, answered by the moms who actually run the householdWorking from home with a houseful of kids: locked office doors, clients overhearing the chaos, and the eventual move back to the officeWhy two kids close in age felt harder than seven and why you'll never regret one more Resources Mentioned: Workforce PayHub Chapters: 00:10: Meet the wives, Amanda and Kely06:30: Supporting a husband who runs his own business09:35: Working from home with a full house16:19: The biggest misconception about big families20:45: Why two kids were harder than seven26:46: Household rules you never expect to make31:50: Faith at home: relics, a chapel, and a priest in the family38:32: Parenting u-turns and a house full of personalities47:51: The real case for marriage and more children55:01: How providing for a family reshapes ambition57:09: Getting fired, and trusting God's timing01:03:20: What working parents miss most Hosted by Eric Jones and David Franzonello of Workforce PayHub. Why You Can't Leave Your Faith at the Door of Your Business

What does it take to lead with integrity when the world keeps telling you to keep faith and work in separate boxes? Father Deacon Trevor—a magistrate judge, former prosecutor, and a deacon of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church—joins Eric and David to make the case that you can't leave your faith at the door of any profession, and that the same disciplines that make a good father make a good leader. Drawing on nearly three decades on the bench, he shows how small daily habits, and a refusal to compartmentalize, shape the way you lead the people you employ, serve, and love. In This Episode Why "leaving your faith at the door" of your business isn't actually possibleHow the marks of a good father map directly onto the marks of a good leader and business ownerWhat it looks like in practice to bring your faith to work, from a judge who does it daily with grieving families in his courtroomThe small daily disciplines that shape how you lead: beginning the workday in prayer, leading your home as the "domestic church"A short primer on the "Father Deacon" title and the Eastern Catholic tradition that frames the conversation Resources Mentioned Workforce PayHubSt. Michael Ukrainian Greek Catholic ChurchEparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma Chapters 00:00 — Welcome to Faith, Hope & Payroll01:39 — What is a "Father Deacon"?04:04 — Married clergy, deacons, and the structure of Holy Orders08:32 — An immigrant family's traditional Catholic faith20:34 — The call to Holy Orders29:41 — Caught between two parishes: the move to the Eastern Church33:05 — Faith in the courtroom and the workplace43:15 — What makes a good father59:24 — Calling Mom and Dad: lessons that outlive your parents1:06:14 — Blessing your children and leading the domestic church1:10:24 — Closing blessing Produced by Saint Kolbe Studios

Real Payroll Disasters: What Two Industry Veterans Have Seen and What You Need to Know

Eric Jones and Dave Franzonello of Workforce PayHub pull back the curtain on the real payroll disasters they've seen across their combined careers—including a $200,000 fraud scheme, a near-miss $109,000 payroll breach triggered by a compromised email account, and a household payroll misclassification that quietly accumulated $40,000 in penalties. They break down exactly how to identify payroll fraud before it hits your account, what most business owners get dangerously wrong about household employees and ITINs, and why bending even one payroll rule almost always costs more than following it. In This Episode: How payroll fraud actually works from the inside—including the exact red flags (Google Voice numbers, missing referrals, businesses "new to payroll but not new to employees") that should stop a transaction before it startsWhy a two-factor authentication system isn't bulletproof if a hacker can access your email first, and how a Workforce PayHub team member caught a fraudulent $109,000 payroll run before it processedThe household payroll misclassification that quietly accumulated $40,000 in penalties—and what every business owner needs to understand about Schedule H vs. 941 filings before adding a domestic worker to payrollWhat ITINs are, why they don't authorize anyone to work legally in the U.S., and what the IRS says directly on its own website about EIN requirements every household employer must meetWhy taking a breath and being transparent is almost always the better move than reaching for a workaround when something in payroll goes wrongChapters: 00:00 Introduction00:30 Welcome & First Video Episode02:32 Payroll Fraud: The $200,000 Case10:15 Email Compromise: The $109,000 Near-Miss15:06 Household Payrolls: How $40,000 in Penalties Happens19:30 Mythbuster: Every Household Employer Needs an EIN22:24 ITINs, H-2A Workers, and Payroll Compliance32:53 Dave's Personal Payroll Oops35:51 Eric's Thursday Night Emergency40:32 Closing Thoughts: Take a Breath, Not a ShortcutResources Mentioned: Workforce PayHubIRS – Employer Identification Number (EIN)IRS – Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)Produced by Saint Kolbe Studios

Should Your Business Offer Earned Wage Access?

Eric Jones and David Franzonello put ZayZoon's Scott Johnson to the test to figure out whether earned wage access helps employees break financial cycles or deepens them. Eric challenges the dependency concern directly, Dave runs a gut check on his own spending habits, and Scott is put to the test on what separates a responsible EWA platform from a predatory one. If you've been approached about offering earned wage access to your employees, this episode is the due diligence you should do first.  In This Episode: What earned wage access is and how the mechanics actually work—fees, income caps, free access tools, and how repayment is handled when an employee quitsThe dependency cycle question: whether EWA helps employees escape financial stress or keeps them in a loop, and what guardrails responsible platforms put in placeWhat's at stake for you as the employer: liability, cash flow impact, and which platforms may leave you holding the bagHow EWA stacks up against the real alternatives: payday loans, overdraft fees, and credit card balancesThe four things to look for when evaluating any EWA provider before bringing it to your workforce Chapters: 00:00: Intro00:49: Welcome and Guest Introduction02:30: Earned vs. Early: What's in the Label?07:26: How ZayZoon Works: Fees, Income Caps, and Free Access10:49: The Dependency Cycle: Eric's Skeptical Case Against EWA18:01: Dave's Gut Check and the Behavior Change Question22:00: Overdraft Fees, Pizza Night, and the Real Cost of the Alternatives25:51: Who's on the Hook? What Business Owners Get Wrong about Overtime and The FLSA

Most business owners think they understand overtime—until an audit reveals years of miscalculations and a back-pay liability they never saw coming. Eric Jones and David Franzonello of Workforce PayHub break down everything you actually need to know: how the FLSA defines overtime, who qualifies as exempt and why, how the new no-tax-on-overtime benefit works at tax time, and how to calculate weighted average overtime correctly before it becomes a costly compliance problem.  In This Episode: How the FLSA actually defines overtime—and why the common assumption that 10 hours in a day triggers overtime pay is wrongWhat the no-tax-on-overtime law delivers for your employees, how the premium is calculated, and why withholding still comes out of every paycheckThe salary threshold and three duties tests (executive, administrative, and professional) that determine whether your employees are legally exempt from overtimeHow weighted average overtime works when employees earn multiple pay rates in the same week—and the back-pay and IRS penalties that accumulate when you calculate it wrong for yearsWhen it makes sense to voluntarily pay overtime to exempt employees, how salaried non-exempt arrangements work, and what union contracts mean for your overtime obligations Chapters: 00:00: Introduction00:28: What Is Overtime?02:14: No Tax on Overtime Explained06:35: Healthcare Workers' Special Rule11:29: The Salary Threshold Test13:27: The 2024 Salary Rule Fight17:29: The Three Duties Tests24:27: Weighted Average Overtime31:10: Salaried Non-Exempt Options35:26: Holiday Pay & Voluntary Overtime37:44: Union Contracts & Overtime41:37: Sundays, Employee Dignity & Overtime Policy Resources Mentioned: Workforce PayHubOvertime Pay — U.S. Department of LaborOne, Big, Beautiful Bill Provisions — IRS Produced by Saint Kolbe Studios
