Episode 56: We Built a Custom Calendar Assistant App in 8 Hours with AI

In this episode, Dominik and Françoise walk through a real-world example of building a custom personal tool with AI—far faster than traditional development. Françoise needed a smarter calendar assistant that does more than just show meetings. She wanted the tool to automatically block preparation time, protect personal activities (sports, piano practice), and prevent overloaded days. Starting from a half-page note, she used Claude to expand it into detailed business requirements. From there, AI generated a visual mockup in about 15–20 minutes, then produced clarifying questions that refined the scope before any real coding began. Dominik took the refined requirements into Claude’s code interface. Together they registered the app with Microsoft Entra for Outlook integration, chose Cloudflare for simple free hosting, and pivoted from a planned mobile app to a web app in a single prompt. The working prototype (built and tested with dummy data, then connected to a test Outlook account) could detect overbooked days, propose rearrangements, and insert prep and follow-up blocks that sync back to the calendar. Key points from the episode:- Clear requirements up front save significant time later—AI makes that step fast.- Visual mockups let you validate the idea before writing code.- AI can handle architecture, coding, tests, and deployment guidance, but technical review is still essential.- The full prototype took roughly 8 hours of combined effort.- Start with a minimum viable product focused on personal efficiency rather than a commercial product. The conversation shows how AI is making custom software accessible for individual use cases, turning specific personal or workflow needs into working tools without large teams or long timelines.#AI #SoftwareDevelopment #ClaudeAI #DigitalTransformation #Productivity #TheDigitalEdge #Podcast #FutureOfWork #NoCode #LowCode #Outlook #CalendarApp #BuildWithAI
