Sharing Network

The provided sources detail the operational and legal procedures of the NJ Sharing Network, a non-profit organization responsible for coordinating organ and tissue donation in New Jersey. They explain that organ donation requires a patient to be on a ventilator with maintained blood flow, often following brain death, while tissue donation can occur after cardiac death. State law mandates that hospitals report every death to the network within one hour for statistical tracking and potential donor evaluation. One donor has the potential to save eight lives through solid organs and enhance over 75 lives through donated tissues like skin and bone. The materials also outline a legal hierarchy for consent, noting that a designation on a driver's license is a binding agreement that takes precedence. Ultimately, these documents serve to educate medical staff on the clinical criteria for referrals and the sensitive collaborative approach required when discussing end-of-life options with families.

Burn

This educational guide details the classification and clinical management of burn injuries, categorizing them by source such as thermal, chemical, electrical, or inhalation agents. It emphasizes that airway protection and fluid resuscitation are the highest priorities during the initial emergent phase, which can last up to 72 hours. The material outlines how to assess the severity and depth of tissue damage, ranging from superficial partial-thickness to full-thickness burns involving bone and muscle. Healthcare providers are instructed on calculating affected body surface area using the Rule of Nines to determine appropriate interventions, including wound care, grafting, and drug management. Finally, the text addresses the long-term rehabilitation process, focusing on scar maturation and the complex psychological needs of both patients and medical staff.
Jun 24

Renal

The provided sources focus on the clinical management of acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). They categorize renal failure into prerenal, intrarenal, and postrenal origins, highlighting the roles of perfusion, tissue damage, and obstructions. Nursing priorities include tracking hourly urine output, managing nephrotoxic medications, and monitoring for fluid overload. The text details the five stages of CKD based on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) to determine when medical interventions or lifestyle changes are necessary. Various treatment modalities are explored, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the surgical requirements for kidney transplantation. Additionally, the sources emphasize the importance of identifying risk factors like diabetes and hypertension to prevent long-term organ deterioration.

Complex Respiratory Problems

These educational materials focus on identifying and managing critical respiratory conditions, specifically focusing on pleural effusion and pulmonary embolism. The text details how fluid accumulation or arterial blockages disrupt the vital balance between ventilation and perfusion, leading to life-threatening oxygenation failures. Readers are introduced to the anatomical structures of the lungs, including the protective pleural layers, and the various diagnostic tools like CT scans and thoracentesis used to evaluate distress. Furthermore, the sources outline essential nursing assessments, highlighting the need to monitor breath sounds and vital signs while providing procedural support. Ultimately, the content emphasizes distinguishing between gas exchange issues and mechanical breathing failures to ensure rapid, effective clinical intervention.

Emergency & Disaster

These materials offer a comprehensive look at the clinical and legal responsibilities inherent in emergency and disaster nursing. They emphasize that initial patient assessments must prioritize identifying early signs of distress, such as confusion and hypotension, which often signal a lack of oxygen to the brain. To ensure safety and efficiency, practitioners utilize SBAR communication for hand-offs and adhere to the EMTALA mandate, which requires hospitals to screen and stabilize all individuals regardless of their ability to pay. The documents also outline specialized care protocols for victims of violence through the use of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE). Furthermore, the sources cover disaster preparedness, detailing how medical teams must use triage algorithms and hazard vulnerability analysis to manage mass casualty events effectively. Together, these resources serve as a guide for maintaining standard precautions and patient safety in high-acuity, unpredictable environments.
