November 7 – Releasing My Burdens

Corey and Bill open on the word surrender, which gets tossed around the rooms with no instructions attached. The Big Book supplies them: abandon yourself to God and His kids, make right the wrongs, and live accordingly. For the Ripple’s fears, they go back to Step Three and then the fear inventory on page 68, where the question is what role God would have me play. They work each fear down by asking why until the root surfaces, a habit borrowed from workplace root cause investigations, and the base fear is usually that God won’t take care of us. Page 68’s prayer asks Him to remove the fear and direct our attention to what He would have us be, and one of them once got a simple answer in a parking lot before a job interview: get out of the car and go inside. Thoughts run like trains whether we invite them or not, so the practical move is asking God for a forgiving heart toward whoever bristles us and casting our anxiety on Him, as 1 Peter 5:7 says. Looking back, they see God’s hand even in the nights that ended in the back of a patrol car, and the potter and the clay carry the rest, since the vessel never tells the potter what it is for. The episode closes on carrying the message of recovery and faith, and on wanting a relationship with the Creator more than relief from problems. The stone for today: Peace comes when I release into God’s hands what I was never meant to carry alone. Read today’s full Daily Ripple at www.dailyripples.com. November 6 – Staying Connected

Corey opens on daily bread and pushes back on the saying that whoever woke up first is the most sober. For him sobriety is a three-legged stool of recovery, unity, and service, and he asks whether unity is working in his life. Pastor Mike brings 1 Thessalonians 5, rejoice, pray continually, give thanks, and the way prayer talks and meditation listens, like any close relationship. Page 164 says to ask in the morning meditation what we can do for the man who is still sick, and the answers come if our own house is in order. Matthew 5 and Matthew 18 take it to reconciliation, and even when someone will not reconcile, we can still love them. Gratitude turns into action. Corey questions the gratitude list, and Pastor Mike treats it as a self-examination tool that should lead to grateful action. The old argument about self-love resolves on page 73’s double life: Pastor Mike calls what he once did self-enabling, Corey comes down off the hill because hating himself would mean hating the God deep within him, and a therapist’s question helps Pastor Mike love the man he has become. Romans 8:28 and there is no waste in God’s economy close it. The stone for today: A close relationship with God is strengthened through daily attention, not occasional effort. November 5 – Seeking God’s Will

Pastor Mike opens with a birthday wish for his wife, then Corey takes the Ripple to page 53: God is either everything or He is nothing, and the longer he stays awake to it, the more he sees God as everything. Insisting on his own plans looks to him like wanting a gift perfectly wrapped when God hands over a brown paper bag, or demanding the exact change he wants. Page 84 says to keep growing, and the 12&12 on Step Twelve says persistent meditation and prayer turned a trickle into a river. When Corey asks what God wants him to be, the answer comes back simple. Pastor Mike takes the other half. Insisting on my own way usually comes from fear, and Philippians 4:6 invites honest requests, while peace comes from trusting God to supply what I need. The prayers of Step Three and Step Seven bracket the work, since the Third Step prayer on page 63 leaves the door open and the Seventh Step prayer closes with an amen. Corey says he writes his amends between them, safe and protected. Pastor Mike reads 2 Timothy 3:16 beside the Big Book’s claim to be the basic text of the Society, and the closing thought is belief as a verb, walked one day at a time. The stone for today: Faith grows deeper when I stop asking God to bless my plans and begin seeking His. Read today’s full Daily Ripple at www.dailyripples.com. November 4 – Built One Day at a Time

Pastor Mike opens on two lines from the Ripple: the Holy Spirit steadying his mind, and faithfulness in ordinary moments preparing him for extraordinary ones, which can be extraordinarily good or bad. When he stays connected through sponsoring, reading, and prayer, he rides the roller coaster of life more evenly, and Psalm 23 reminds him God is in the valleys as well as on the mountaintops. Corey recalls the daily habits of his drinking years and the structure he keeps now, and he ties it to the daily bread in Matthew 6:11, the “new Employer” passage on page 63, and the daily reprieve on page 85. Compared with the occasional inspiration of his old late nights, he says, a continuous practice of prayer and meditation is what makes his life make sense. The stones from page 75 carry the second half: willingness, the keystone, and the foundation stone of helping others on page 97. Pastor Mike adds Matthew 7:24 on building a house on the rock, with the Bible as his foundation and the Big Book as his second tier of guidance. He first served selfishly, because people said it would help him, and one day at a time it grew into thinking of how to be there for someone who needs him. The stone for today: A strong spiritual life is built through faithful daily habits, not occasional moments of inspiration. Read today’s full Daily Ripple at www.dailyripples.com. November 3 – Drawing Near to God

Corey opens with a reminder about the S in Daily Ripples, then turns to what prayer and meditation look like in practice. Bill’s Story on page 13 says to sit with a doubt and ask only for direction and strength, and page 68 says to ask God what He would have us be. Before a job interview, Corey asked exactly that, and the answer came back as “get out of the car and go inside.” He pairs it with a breath prayer, “I love you, God” in and out, and page 87’s promise that we come to rely on the answers. Pastor Mike notices the order of the Stone (honest reflection first, then listening, then prayer) and adds praying the scriptures through lectio divina, along with Lamentations 3:40: examine our ways and return to the Lord. Pages 86 to 88 give the day its shape: on awakening, pause when agitated, and let God discipline those of us who are undisciplined. Pastor Mike reads the evening review as questions about his own day, and he finishes a painting promised to his stepson as a small act of service. Corey adds that honest reflection needs other people, since his head alone can turn nothing into something, and Pastor Mike closes on being glad God called him to be a minister and not a monk. The stone for today: A healthy spiritual life is built through honest reflection, intentional listening, and faithful prayer. Read today’s full Daily Ripple at www.dailyripples.com. WAVE: Big Book Study with Corey Session Fourteen - Into Action Part 1

Corey picks up at the opening of Into Action, having finished the inventory in last week’s study. He says he invites God into every Fifth Step before he sits down with a man, and he works the pages with his circled words (requires, must, vital, necessary). Page 72 says that admitting our defects to God, to ourselves, and to another human being requires action on our part. He explains why a solitary self-appraisal falls short: he can lie to himself and to others, but telling his whole life story to someone else leaves no room to edit it around his ego. He ties the text to Step Two, to willingness, honesty, and humility on page 13, and to the cornerstone on page 47. Page 73 supplies the warning. Newcomers who kept certain facts to themselves took inventory but hung on to the worst items in stock, and the alcoholic who leads a double life plays the actor with a stage character. He reads that against the actor and the director from page 60 and the psychologist who never heard the whole truth. Page 74 on choosing the right person leads to his own Fifth Steps and the closed-mouth, understanding friend. We have no right to save our own skin at another person’s expense, and the rule is to be hard on ourselves and considerate of others. The close is page 75’s promise: withhold nothing, and fears fall away, the nearness of the Creator arrives, and we walk the Broad Highway hand in hand with the Spirit of the Universe. November 2 – Growing Beyond Survival

Pastor Mike opens on the arrival of fall weather and his back porch, and on the contrast with a year ago, when he was in survival mode with two jobs and almost no time to reflect. Page 84 calls growth in understanding and effectiveness a lifetime matter, and at 13.5 years sober he agrees. Corey describes the plateau feeling and the freedom of seeing more than one road once he is awake enough to look, then ties it to page 66 and the growth and maintenance of a spiritual experience. He compares growth to drinking: when something is good you want more of it, and a relationship with a Higher Power works the same way. November brings Step Eleven, and page 98 of the Twelve and Twelve says self-examination, meditation, and prayer woven together make an unshakable foundation for life. Romans 5 supplies the chain from suffering to perseverance, character, and hope. Corey reads page 25’s fourth dimension as physical, mental, and spiritual working together, and Pastor Mike links that to the greatest commandment, loving God with everything we have. The stone for today: God desires more than my survival. He desires my continual growth. Read today’s full Daily Ripple at www.dailyripples.com. Reach out any time at wave@dailyripples.com. November 1 – Adjusting My Sails

Pastor Mike opens with a cruise for a big birthday and a sailor’s lesson: nobody controls the wind, but a sailor does control the sails. Control can feel like strength from the inside while looking like exhaustion to everyone else. The actor in page 60 wants to run the whole show, and Proverbs 16:9 says people plan their course but the Lord establishes their steps. Planning is fine, trouble starts when the plan becomes the final word. The Ripple names three sails to adjust: attitude, actions, and trust in God. Paul learned to be content in a prison cell (Philippians 4:11), and page 68’s promise to match calamity with serenity is a sail adjustment too. In Mark 4 Jesus calms the wind with a word and then asks his disciples about the fear in their hearts, which gives Pastor Mike grace for his own fear while Jesus stays with him. Page 62 says God is the director and he is the agent, and Hebrews 13:8 reminds him the winds shift while Jesus does not. The week’s challenge is to name one thing you are trying to control that isn’t yours and pick one sail to adjust. The stone for today: Peace comes when I stop trying to control every circumstance and learn to respond with faith. Read today’s full Daily Ripple at www.dailyripples.com.
