Miami Might Do This Two Years in a Row

Last year a true freshman safety led the ACC in interceptions and sealed a College Football Playoff win over Texas A&M. Miami might be about to do it again. Bryce Fitzgerald set a bar nobody expecte: six picks, most in the conference, FWAA Freshman All-American, all as an 18-year-old. And here's the part that matters: coming out of high school he was 172 pounds and ranked around 133rd. He wasn't supposed to be that guy. Now there's another true freshman in that safety room. JJ Dunnigan is 6'3", 205, ranked as high as 92nd, and he ran a 10.94 hundred. Bigger than Fitzgerald. Ranked higher than Fitzgerald. And Miami's returning starter Zechariah Poyser just called him the fastest player on the team. He's also from Manhattan, Kansas, which is nowhere near Miami's normal recruiting map. His father played at Kansas State. He committed to KU, watched them lose 42-17 to K-State in October, decommitted two nights later, and pledged to Miami six days before he had ever set foot on campus. In this video: what Fitzgerald actually did last season, why Dunnigan left home, the recruiting flip nobody in Kansas saw coming, what came out of spring practice, including the honest part his own defensive coordinator. And whether he can realistically break into one of the best secondaries in the country. The Echevarria Law Firm — proud title sponsor of Canes Pulse. Miami Has TWO 6'8" Freshmen. Nobody's Talking About This One.

Everybody's talking about Jackson Cantwell. And he's earned it. But Miami has a SECOND 6'8" freshman offensive lineman, and I think he's about to battle for the right guard job. Ben Congdon is 6'8", 330 pounds, and he turned 18 two months ago. Alex Mirabal found him as a high three-star at a Division V school in Zoarville, Ohio, and offered him before anybody else did Alabama came in only after he'd already committed to Miami. The consensus is that he's too tall to play inside. In a survey of 101 NFL guards, thirty-seven were 6'4" and exactly zero were 6'8". So the skepticism is fair. But here's what that take misses: Congdon is a state-placing heavyweight wrestler. And the actual reason tall guys can't play guard isn't the height — it's the stiff hips that usually come with it. Wrestlers bend. That's the entire sport. In this video: how Mirabal found him, what his wrestling background actually transfers to the interior, the two NFL comps that make the case — Georgia's Dylan Fairchild for the wrestling and Robert Gallery for the height — and my call on the Buchanan–Congdon battle at right guard. Includes his high school highlights plus recent footage from a workout with his trainer back home. The Echevarria Law Firm — proud title sponsor of Canes Pulse. This Explains Everything About Miami's Defense

In 2024, Miami's defense ranked 50th in the country. In 2025, it finished top five. Same building, a lot of the same players — and a scheme that actually got simpler. That's the part nobody can explain, so I sat down with Nic Echevarria and worked through it piece by piece. The short version: the scheme isn't the answer, it's the delivery system. Corey Hetherman's defense is built on one rule that applies to all eleven players — over, under, or through his face — and that same rule shows up in block destruction, in tackling, and in the pass rush. Gap integrity is secondary. The quickest path from A to B is a straight line. On top of that sits ESV: Excitement, Swarm, Violence. Not a slogan on a wall — an actual grading system players get scored on. We get into the base defense and the three positions that make it go (Nickel, Jack, and B$), why a fast rush lets the coverage stay simple and put more eyes on the quarterback, and the honest weak spot — what happened when they blitzed on early downs, and the crease that opens up on the field side. UNC's GM Is On Leave. Remember What He Said About Miami?

North Carolina placed general manager Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave this morning — effective immediately, weeks before the season. UNC gave no reason, and no reporter has one, so this video doesn't speculate about it. What it does do is go through what's already on the record. In October 2023, Lombardi said Mario Cristobal was beyond saving: "There is coaching malpractice, and then there is coaching malpractice squared… you cannot cure this." In December 2024, two days after taking the highest-paid GM job in college football, he said Miami had "been wonderful in recruiting" but couldn't "get to the final 12" — that Cristobal collects talent and can't build a team. Nineteen months later: Miami went 13-3, finished No. 2, beat the defending champions in the playoff, played for a national title in its own stadium, and had nine players drafted with three in the first round. North Carolina went 4-8, ended a six-year bowl streak, lost 51 players to the transfer portal, and had zero players drafted for the first time since 2016. This is the story of what happened when college football decided the thing it needed most was NFL people. The Echevarria Law Firm — proud title sponsor of Canes Pulse. Stop Asking If Miami's O-Line Will Be Fine. It Will. Here's Why.

Miami just sent four starting offensive linemen to the NFL — Francis Mauigoa went 10th overall, Markel Bell, Anez Cooper, and James Brockermeyer all followed. So everybody keeps asking me the same question this offseason: are you worried about the O-line? My answer never changes. I'm not worried. I'm not even concerned. The honest word is curious — and in this video I'll show you exactly why. Here's what national people miss when they look at the four departures and see a crisis: those NFL picks aren't the problem, they're the proof. Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal have turned linemen into draft picks at four different schools over 15 years — Alabama, Oregon, and now Miami, including the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. At Miami specifically, they took a room that produced ZERO draft picks in six years and turned it into FIVE in three years, the best pass-protecting front in the ACC, and the engine of a national championship game run. Then I go down the entire 2026 depth chart — position by position — and show you that the cupboard isn't bare. It's stocked with five-stars they handpicked, led by Jackson Cantwell, the No. 1 overall recruit in America, at left tackle. ▶️ Drop your projected starting five in the comments.
