The Fire Service's Worst Enemy Might Be Us

Are we our own worst enemy? The fire service talks about progress, better training, stronger leadership, and professionalism. Yet sometimes, our own behavior on social media creates division instead of solutions. In this solo episode of Beyond The Turnouts, we examine a recent Arkansas fire training controversy and the importance of understanding the full story before publicly criticizing others. When firefighters are criticized for not attending training, what happens when some who wanted to participate were denied entry because of limited space? This isn't about attacking the people who dedicate their time to training firefighters. It's about accountability, accessibility, communication, and how we can do better as a profession. Because there's a difference between holding people accountable and tearing them down. If we want the fire service to move forward, we have to stop working against each other and start working toward solutions. The question is simple: Are we building the fire service, or are we holding it back? This is Beyond The Turnouts — real conversations about the job, the challenges, and the people behind the uniform.

Why Does Nobody Check On The Chief

Nobody checks on the Chief. Everyone expects the Chief to have the answers. The Chief is supposed to lead. Make the decisions. Carry the responsibility. Support the firefighters. Handle the problems. Keep moving when things get difficult. But what happens when the Chief is the one who needs somebody? Leadership can be incredibly isolating. Sometimes the person everyone depends on is the person nobody thinks to check on. In this episode of Beyond The Turnouts, we talk about the weight leaders carry, the importance of having people you can trust, and why asking for help isn't weakness. Because behind every rank, title, badge, and uniform is still a person. Who checks on the Chief? 🎙️ Beyond The Turnouts — When the Gear Comes Off If this conversation resonates with you, share it with a leader who may need to hear it. #BeyondTheTurnouts #FireChief #FirefighterMentalHealth #FirstResponderMentalHealth #FireServiceLeadership #Leadership #MentalHealth #FirstResponder #Firefighter #HealthyLeadership

When the Uniform Comes Off, but the Responsibility Doesn't | Beyond The Turnouts

When the uniform comes off, does the responsibility ever really go away? In this solo episode of Beyond The Turnouts, I reflect on the personal side of being a Fire Chief and the challenge of separating work from life outside the fire service. The responsibility of leading a department doesn't always stop at the end of the day. The decisions, the accountability, the people, and the possibility that something could happen can follow you home. How do you remain dedicated to the people you lead without allowing the job to consume your identity, relationships, and mental health? This is an honest conversation about leadership, responsibility, boundaries, and learning how to be present when the uniform comes off. Beyond The Turnouts — When the Gear Comes Off.

3 AM Thoughts: When Life Enters A New Season

Sometimes the best conversations happen when you’re not planning to have one. It’s 3 AM. I can’t sleep. My mind is running, thinking about life, where I’ve been, where I’m going, and the different seasons we all find ourselves walking through. Life changes. Relationships change. Our careers change. The people around us change. And sometimes, we find ourselves standing in a season we didn’t expect or necessarily ask for. But maybe the answer isn’t always figuring everything out right away. Maybe sometimes it’s simply continuing to put in the work. In this late-night, unplanned episode of Beyond The Turnouts, I talk about what it means to recognize when a season of life is changing, how we handle the uncertainty that comes with it, and why continuing to show up matters—even when we’re tired, frustrated, or don't have all the answers. No script. No production plan. Just a conversation from a sleepless night about life, growth, change, and continuing forward. Because sometimes the next season requires us to become someone different than who we were in the last one. Beyond The Turnouts — When the Gear Comes Off.

    Surviving Without Eating Our Young

We were all somebody’s rookie once. So why do we sometimes make new firefighters and EMTs feel like they have to survive us before they can survive the job? In this episode of Beyond The Turnouts, we take a hard look at the culture of “eating our young” and ask whether the way we’ve always done things is actually preparing the next generation—or simply passing down the same unhealthy behaviors that were passed down to us. This isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about building people instead of breaking them. It’s about accountability without humiliation, teaching without belittling, and creating a culture where new responders can ask questions, make mistakes, learn, and grow. Because the goal isn’t just to teach someone how to become a good firefighter or EMT. It’s to teach them how to survive the career without losing themselves along the way. Just because we went through it doesn’t mean they have to. We were all somebody’s rookie once. Let’s stop eating our young. Let’s build them. #BeyondTheTurnouts #Firefighter #EMS #FirstResponder #MentalHealth #Leadership #FireService #Mentorship #Burnout #FirstResponderMentalHealth

Healthy Leadership in the Fire Service: Taking Care of Your People

Leadership in the fire service isn't just about having the rank. It's about what you do with the responsibility that comes with it. In this solo episode of Beyond The Turnouts, we talk about the difference between leadership and healthy leadership—and why taking care of your people is one of the hardest responsibilities a leader can carry. We get into accountability, communication, culture, mental health, and the responsibility leaders have to recognize when their people are struggling. Because leadership isn't about being in charge. It's about being responsible for the people who trust you to lead them. If you're a firefighter, officer, chief, supervisor, or anyone responsible for leading others, this conversation is for you. 🎙️ Beyond The Turnouts — Where We Go Beyond What People See.

Conference Lecture - What is the legacy you leave?

As I get back into posting new content I wanted to start by putting this out for everyone. This year I had the honor of speaking at the AEMTA Conference and telling my story and giving my view on mental health and leadership. Looking into the future and having vision is only a part of being a Fire Chief, EMS Director, or whatever leadership title you carry. It's also about taking the time and ensuring the health of your people to do the work and take over for you when the time comes. What are you doing to ensure the future of your agency? Have you taken the time and built a foundation to ensure the physical, spiritual, and mental health of your people?
