Different by Design: A Conversation on Neurodivergence (Feat: Chandler Pope)

What does it actually mean to experience the world differently? In this episode of Pleasure & Pain, Tameika Chambers-Pope and Dawn Thomas-Banks welcome a very special guest, Tameika’s daughter Chandler, for an open and deeply personal conversation about neurodivergence. For Chandler, ADHD isn’t an abstract topic. It is part of how she experiences work, relationships, emotions, sensory input, social situations, and everyday life. For Tameika and Dawn, the conversation offers an opportunity to reconsider experiences they’ve witnessed as parents, family members, friends, and colleagues through a different lens. Together, the three unpack what neurodivergence means, why ADHD can look dramatically different from one person to another, and why some people can go years without being recognized as neurodivergent. Chandler shares her experience with masking, sensory overload, rejection sensitivity, workplace expectations, friendships, and the complicated relationship she has with language that describes neurodivergence as a “superpower.” The conversation also explores neurodivergence within the Black community, including the cultural expectations and stereotypes that can influence how certain behaviors are interpreted, suppressed, or overlooked. And for Tameika, the discussion becomes personal in another way: What does parenting look like when you realize your child may experience the same words, environments, expectations, and emotions very differently than you do? This isn’t a clinical conversation, and it isn’t an attempt to speak for every neurodivergent person. It’s a conversation rooted in lived experience, curiosity, vulnerability, and a willingness to keep learning. Because understanding someone doesn’t always require experiencing the world the way they do. Sometimes it starts with being willing to believe them when they tell you what their experience feels like. Who Told You That?! Confronting Our Core Beliefs

Who told you that you couldn't make mistakes? That you had to hold your emotions in? That being a good parent meant putting yourself last? That you couldn't trust people? That looking a certain way was necessary to be attractive? And perhaps the bigger question: Do you still believe it? In this episode of Pleasure & Pain, Tameika and Dawn take a deeply personal look at the core beliefs they've carried into adulthood and the experiences that helped create them. Using a core-beliefs assessment as a starting point, the two explore how much of what we believe about ourselves, our relationships, parenting, success, money, appearance, trust, and even joy can be traced back to what we experienced, observed, and absorbed growing up. The conversation gets honest about perfectionism, punishment, shame, emotional restraint, the pressure placed on mothers to sacrifice their own happiness, and the expectations women can inherit around appearance and relationships. But it also explores the other side of the equation: how beliefs can evolve, how difficult experiences can sometimes produce unexpected strengths, and how we can consciously decide what we want to carry into the next generation. It's a conversation about childhood, but ultimately it's about adulthood. Because sometimes the most important question isn't "Why am I like this?" It's:"Who told me this was the way I had to be?" Cologne, Baseball Caps, and Permission to Enjoy

What if the best relationship advice isn't about finding the right person? What if it's about becoming the right version of yourself first? In Episode 2 of Pleasure & Pain, Tameika and Dawn dive into the realities of modern dating, personal growth, healing, and the unexpected ways life introduces us to people who challenge our assumptions. Tameika shares the story behind meeting the man she affectionately refers to as "9PM"—a chance encounter sparked by a memorable scent, a fitted baseball cap, and a moment that would eventually become much more than either of them anticipated. But this conversation goes far deeper than a meet-cute. Together, Tameika and Dawn explore how dating has changed over the years, the importance of understanding your own emotional patterns, and why healing old wounds can transform the way we approach relationships. The discussion touches on abandonment wounds, resilience, cultural differences, relationship expectations, and the freedom that comes from no longer looking for someone to complete you. Whether you're dating, married, divorced, happily single, or somewhere in between, this episode is a reminder that the healthiest relationships often begin when you stop searching for someone to rescue you and start enjoying the life you've already built. Welcome to Pleasure & Pain!

Every story worth telling has two sides. The part that felt good and the part that cost you something. Welcome to Pleasure & Pain. In this debut episode, longtime friends Tameika Chambers-Pope and Dawn Thomas-Banks pull back the curtain on the conversations that shaped this show. Before there were episode titles or recording dates, there was a friendship, a shared belief that real growth lives in the honest spaces most people don't talk about, and a question: what if we just told the truth? Tameika and Dawn introduce themselves not as experts, but as two self-aware women navigating the full range of what it means to live, evolve, and show up authentically. In this first conversation, they share the "why" behind the show, unpack the meaning of the name, and give you a real look at what Pleasure & Pain will explore: womanhood, spirituality, relationships, mental health, ambition, identity, and everything in between. You'll also get your first look at the show's signature segments, including "Pleasure and/or Pain," where the hosts get personal about their most recent moments of joy and discomfort; "Punchbowl," where no question is off the table; and "The Most/Least Game," a rapid-fire round that reveals more than you'd expect. This episode ends with a direct ask: if this show resonates with you, help them get it in front of the world. The "Get Us to Oprah" campaign is real, it's bold, and it starts right here. Subscribe, follow, leave a review, and most importantly, bring a friend. This conversation is better when more people are in the room.
