On the Ethics of Selective Observance

Going with "On the Ethics of Selective Observance: What the Torah's Word for 'Heel' Reveals About Partial Commitment" — it reads as a thesis rather than a marketing hook, consistent with the standing rule that titles should be scholarly claims, not headlines built to bait a click. Here's the full set rewritten in that register. Buzzsprout Title On the Ethics of Selective Observance:  What the Torah's Word for "Heel" Reveals About Partial Commitment Parshas Eikev takes its name from a word that means heel, and Rav Kalatsky opens by explaining why: the Torah is addressing those commandments a person is inclined to trample underfoot, precisely because their apparent minor stature invites neglect. To observe them fully, the tradition teaches, is to receive blessing withheld from no one, in its complete measure. The deeper question is what licenses a person to rank one commandment above another in the first place. Rav Kalatsky argues that any such hierarchy rests on human judgment alone, a judgment with no genuine claim to the commandment's true worth, since that worth is not ours to assess. The consequence extends further than the neglected commandment itself: once self-interest governs which obligations a person keeps, that same self-interest attaches itself to the ones he does observe, compromising even his most devoted acts. It is precisely this fear, Rav Kalatsky notes, that King David gives voice to when he speaks of the day of judgment. The shiur closes with an account of Rav Aharon Kotler, who ordered new stationery for his yeshiva upon discovering that a printer, in the interest of a more appealing image, had added foliage to a photograph of a building where none existed. Truth, Rav Kalatsky observes, admits no partial measure, not even in service of an otherwise worthy end.

Why the Number Six Shows Up Everywhere in This Week's Torah Portion

Why the Number Six Shows Up Everywhere in This Week's Torah Portion — And What It's Trying to Tell You Continuing in Parshas Vaetchanan, Rav Kalatsky notices a pattern that keeps repeating: the number six. The declaration that nothing exists besides God appears six times in the Torah, paired six times with a phrase naming Him master of the earth. He connects this to Adam, created on the sixth day as a single individual, so that every person could say the world was created for him alone, a teaching invoked in Jewish law when witnesses testify in a capital case, to impress on them the weight of taking one life. From there, the shiur turns to a harder question. The Talmud contains statements, like references to mermaids, that are factually false. Doesn't that undermine it? Rav Kalatsky cites a teaching that answers no: alongside its plain legal content, the Talmud also carries a hidden, esoteric layer, historically passed down orally to select students. Once it had to be written down, the rabbis used facts accepted as true in their era as a kind of code, concealing that deeper layer from casual readers. The Talmud, in short, was never meant as a science text. As Rav Kalatsky closes, the same principle applies to daily life: outcomes trace back to God's will, not to the natural process that seems to produce them.

Why Freedom From Responsibility Isn't Peace: A Lesson on Purpose and Preparation from the Duties of the Heart

Why Freedom From Responsibility Isn't Peace: A Lesson on Purpose and Preparation from the Duties of the Heart This installment turns from the weekly Torah portion to the classic medieval ethical work known as Duties of the Heart, chapter four, on trust in God. Rav Kalatsky opens with the book's account of an ascetic community whose members dressed identically to erase visible class distinction, and each kept an open grave beside his own front door as a standing reminder of mortality. The community also lived apart from wives and children, close enough to meet family obligations but far enough to avoid distraction. A modern listener might expect that arrangement, or the constant awareness of death, to produce anxiety. Rav Kalatsky contrasts it with the opposite case: refugees fleeing wartime violence, who carried no responsibility to anyone, yet had no peace of mind at all, consumed instead by raw fear for their survival. The difference, he argues, is purpose. Tranquility doesn't come from having fewer obligations. It comes from knowing what those obligations are for. When a listener objects that organizing a life around death sounds morbid, Rav Kalatsky reframes it: preparing for what he calls "checkout time" is no different from working toward any deadline. It's what gives achievement its stakes.

Why Some Divine Judgments Can Be Reversed and Others Cannot: The Limits of Prayer in Parshas Vaetchanan

Why Some Divine Judgments Can Be Reversed and Others Cannot: The Limits of Prayer in Parshas Vaetchanan In this week's Torah portion, Vaetchanan, Rav Kalatsky opens with a distinction drawn by the 19th-century commentator known as the Malbim between two forms of divine anger described in the Torah. One is like an arrow still in flight, which can still be called back before it lands. The other, once released, cannot be recalled. Moses's plea to enter the Land of Israel falls into the second category. It was a final decree, issued for the sake of the entire nation, that no amount of prayer could undo. The medieval commentator Rashi explains why Moses was told to stop pleading: his own greatness would have made continued prayer look like a public embarrassment to God rather than an honor. The same principle, the Rav shows, explains why Pharaoh's heart was hardened before the Exodus, and why later generations abandoned religious practices that had only ever been performed for appearances. But nothing sincere is ever wasted. The Talmud states that Moses was credited with every good deed he would have performed had he entered the land. As the influential 20th-century rabbi known as the Chofetz Chaim wrote, a generation that fails to rebuild what was lost is treated as though it destroyed it itself.

    Three Days or Forty Years

Three Days or Forty Years Rashi on Parshat Devarim: the shorter route from Sinai to the Land is 3 days. It took 40 years. The shiur reads the pattern. Parshat Devarim opens the last 36 days of Moses's life. Rashi records the numbers of the journey from Sinai to the border of the Land. The ordinary route was 11 days. The expedited route God prepared was 3 days. The actual route was 40 years. Every ascent of consequence meets a prosecution. Before Sinai, before entry to the Land, before the reign of Hezekiah that was to be the reign of Messiah, before the rescue of the Mir yeshiva students who reached Kobe during the Second World War. Nothing about spiritual transformation is uncontested. Stalin let the Mir students through because he wanted to plant spies among them. The prosecutor's own strategy became the vehicle of the rescue. That is the pattern Rashi teaches at the opening of Devarim. The shorter route is always the one God was already preparing.

What the Gold Was Forgiven For Once

What the Gold Was Forgiven For Once The wealth Israel carried out of Egypt excused them once at the golden calf. Thirty-six days before his death, Moshe returns to the same wealth, no longer as their defense. Devarim opens with a veiled rebuke about gold. Rashi traces the concealed place-names in the opening pesukim to the wealth Bnei Yisrael carried out of Egypt, the fulfillment of a promise Hashem made to Avraham, urged upon a reluctant nation who had to be told explicitly to ask their neighbors for silver and gold before they left. That same wealth became the raw material of the eigel. At the sin itself, Moshe Rabbeinu turned this fact into an argument for mercy. The Gemara likens it to a father who dresses his son in fine clothing, drapes gold around his neck, hands him a purse, and sends him past a place of temptation with only an instruction not to enter. The abundance itself, Moshe argued, had created the vulnerability, and Hashem accepted the claim. Thirty-six days before his death, Moshe revisits the same wealth, but this time as indictment rather than defense. The shiur traces what shifted between the two readings of a single gift, and what a person owes once mercy has already been extended.

The Order of the Sentence Betrayed Them

The Order of the Sentence Betrayed Them Reuven and Gad request the Transjordan for their cattle. Rashi reads the order of their sentence, pens before homes, and finds their confession inside the syntax. Parshat Matot records the request of Reuven and Gad: pastureland east of the Jordan, away from the tribes crossing to conquer the Land. Moshe hears the request and, before answering the substance, corrects the order. The tribes had asked to build pens for their livestock, then houses for their children. Rashi reads the sequence as unintentional testimony — they had already decided what mattered first. The shiur traces that inversion through the keri and ktiv of nefesh vohelet, a phrase describing a person overwhelmed and distracted by wealth he has seized rather than been given. Seized wealth, the text implies, carries no bracha. Reuven and Gad were the first tribes exiled, a consequence the Medrash ties directly to this moment. The shiur closes on the corrective: wealth held as a medium toward Torah becomes kodesh. Wealth held as an end in itself, however acquired, becomes the thing a person answers for first.

The Places That Were Never Places

The Places That Were Never Places  Devarim opens with a list of locations. Rashi reads them as concealed rebuke, veiled names for where the nation failed, spoken to every Jew who was there. Parshat Devarim opens with a list of place names: Eleh hadevarim, these are the words Moshe spoke in the wilderness, opposite Suf, between Paran and Tofel. Rashi reads the list against the grain. These are not geography. Each name conceals a failure, a place where the nation angered Hashem, named in remez rather than said outright, because a rebuke spoken directly would humiliate. The shiur asks why Moshe assembled every Jew alive to hear it. Had he addressed only some, those absent could claim they would have answered differently, defended their fathers, argued a case Moshe never heard. So the whole nation stood present, present enough that no excuse could survive the room. The shiur closes on the corrective teaching beneath the rebuke: a person owes effort, the farmer still plows and sows, but what grows from that effort belongs to Hashem alone.
