    The Two Witnesses

The Two Witnesses A Holmes UnLimited Observation “One day, this will all be worth it.” This is something we often tell ourselves when today's demands seem justified by tomorrow's rewards. But what if you're beginning to question that bargain? Or wondering why an experience you remember fondly didn't always feel quite so enjoyable while you were living it? The Two Witnesses explores Daniel Kahneman's distinction between the Experiencing Self and the Remembering Self - and what happens when the person who lived an experience and the person who later judges it are not quite examining the same evidence. Clues from this Observation Why do some moments survive in memory while others disappear? How can the ending of an experience change the verdict we later give it?When experience and memory disagree, which witness gets to speak for the whole case?Follow the Story A Study in Fear This investigation has its roots in a family experiment to create a memorable weekend — including a 300-foot bungee jump and the rather inconvenient necessity of having to experience it before it could become a memory. Follow A Study in Fear → Read the Written Observation The written version of The Two Witnesses includes the Investigator's Notes, with links to Kahneman and the research behind this investigation. A Study in Fear

A Study in Fear What begins as a family experiment in creating a memorable weekend becomes something rather more revealing. A 300-foot bungee jump. A crane above a lake. A decision that felt perfectly manageable… until the moment it became real. A Study in Fear explores what happens when intention becomes commitment, when fear finally arrives, and when the person living an experience encounters the person who will later remember it. Clues from this case Why does fear sometimes arrive only when possibility becomes immediate? What changes when a decision moves from something we are thinking about to something we must actually do? And when we later decide that an experience was “worth it”, whose judgement are we really hearing - the person who lived it, or the person who remembers it? Those questions lead into two connected Holmes UnLimited Observations. Follow the Observations The Fear Bubble The Fear Bubble follows that clue into a wider investigation of anticipatory stress - the strange human ability to begin experiencing a difficult future before it has actually arrived. It explores the difference between preparing for a moment and prematurely living through it, and asks whether fear itself is always the problem, or whether sometimes we simply enter it too soon. Explore The Fear Bubble → The Two Witnesses The weekend in A Study in Fear began with a deliberate experiment: could we create an experience designed to become a powerful memory? The Two Witnesses takes that idea further through Daniel Kahneman’s distinction between the Experiencing Self and the Remembering Self. The person standing on the crane was, briefly, very uncertain about the whole enterprise. The person remembering it years later is delighted to have done it. Both are telling the truth. So which witness gets to decide whether an experience (or perhaps even a period of our life) was worth having? Explore The Two Witnesses → Explore more Stories The Casebook contains more stories drawn from the curious territory of work, life, decisions and the way we make sense of what happens to us. There is no prescribed order. Choose another case, follow a different trail, and see what catches your attention. Explore the Holmes UnLimited Stories → Continue the Investigation Every story leaves clues behind. Some lead into another Story. Others lead into an Observation. And occasionally, one follows you back into your own life. There is no correct route through Holmes UnLimited. Follow whichever thread refuses to let go.
