Welcome to Charles Fort’s The Book of the Damned, a strange archive of falling frogs, impossible stones, vanished data, celestial anomalies, and facts that refused to fit. Learn the true meaning of the word Fortean in a world of rejected evidence, sceptical wonder, and the mysteries left outside accepted knowledge.

  1. Episode 1

The Book of the Damned Chapter 1

In which an array of excluded and anomalous data—termed "the damned"—is assembled to illustrate the flawed and arbitrary processes by which Science, striving for order and definiteness, excludes that which resists clear categorisation. It is proposed that all phenomena are continuous and interrelated, rendering final proofs and rigid definitions impossible, while existence itself is portrayed as a restless intermediate state seeking but never achieving the universal reality it imitates.

  2. Episode 2

The Book of the Damned Chapter 2

In which the autumn of 1883, graced with unparalleled sunsets and blue moons, invites a curious scrutiny of scientific explanations pinned to the Krakatoa eruption, challenging the firmaments of accepted knowledge and atmospheric phenomena. We observe an unfolding resistance to conventional exclusion, embracing instead the peculiarities of hailstones, coloured rains, and falling stones, revealing a landscape where the earth’s relations with the cosmos are far from the tame and isolated narrative once prescribed.

  3. Episode 3

The Book of the Damned Chapter 3

In which the author observes the persistent strivings of science toward an elusive realness, while uncovering countless instances of coloured rains—yellow, black, and red—that defy comforting terrestrial explanations and hint at something far stranger beyond accepted knowledge. Through a curious compendium of reports and chemical analyses, he reveals the uneasy merging of phenomena and the tantalizing suggestion of extraterrestrial or inter-planetary origins that challenge conventional certitudes and beckon a broader, if unsettling, understanding of our world.

  4. Episode 4

The Book of the Damned Chapter 4

In which a curious catalogue of gelatinous, flesh-like, and other inexplicably falling substances is presented with meticulous care, revealing the persistent human impulse to explain such phenomena within the confines of familiar earthly origins despite their strange and often contradictory nature. These accounts, gathered from diverse times and places, softly challenge the rigidity of scientific orthodoxy while suggesting that the skies might occasionally harbour mysteries more viscous and elusive than commonly imagined.

  5. Episode 5

The Book of the Damned Chapter 5

In which the peculiar phenomena of extraordinary and inexplicable material falls from the sky—ranging from fibrous “marsh paper” to oily and vegetable substances—are surveyed with a sceptical eye towards scientific dogma and its penchant for convenient assimilation. It is suggested that these elusive occurrences, defying strict earthly explanation and conventional periodicity, tempt us to broaden our vision towards a cosmic oneness wherein material and immaterial merge beyond ordinary comprehension.

  6. Episode 6

The Book of the Damned Chapter 6

In which observations are gathered of unusual substances falling from the sky—sulphur, sandstone, salt, cinders, coal, and even what might be fossils—challenging rigid orthodoxies that exclude such data on account of their preposterousness or incompatibility with established classifications. The relentless interplay of acceptance and denial reveals a cosmos not bound by conventional categories, where intermediateness and abrupt transitions persistently unsettle scientific certainty and invite reconsideration of the nature of existence and reason.

  7. Episode 7

The Book of the Damned Chapter 7 Part 1

In which the perplexing phenomena of living creatures such as frogs and fishes falling from the sky are examined with a keen eye on the curious details that defy conventional meteorological explanations, suggesting the presence of unusual zones aloft where gravity seems to wane and objects remain suspended. The narrative thoughtfully considers reports of these falls—often limited in distribution and sometimes involving creatures found uninjured—hinting at possibilities beyond earthly origins and challenging orthodox dismissal with meticulous attention to testimony and circumstance.

  8. Episode 8

The Book of the Damned Chapter 7 Part 2

In which an inquisitive mind contemplates a strange aerial region—perhaps a Super-Sargasso Sea—where diverse creatures and objects might linger, only to be washed down by atmospheric upheavals, challenging orthodox notions of gravitation and origin. Observations of innumerable falls of larvae, fish, frogs, and even snakes, coupled with peculiar seasonal and developmental patterns, suggest a mysterious external source, whimsically dubbed Genesistrine, that defies conventional explanations and invites thoughtful scepticism.
