Ep 3: Immigrant Rights & HCW

Today I spoke with Jayme, a medical student from Minneapolis, MN, who is giving immigrant rights for healthcare workers training around the US. Since frontline workers are dealing with high risk individuals and communities most impacted by the recent immigration crackdown and violence, we need to be prepared more than ever for armed federal agents in our work spaces.  Jayme worked during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, MN that began in December 2025 and officially ended in February 2026 with continued ICE presence to this day. We discuss how the trainings started and how they evolved with active ICE presence during the Surge as well as why it is just as important now to get this training. Our discussion includes how hospital administrations responded to the federal government and HIPAA violations with ‘compliance in advance’ or ‘anticipatory obedience’ and retaliation towards staff who spoke up.  This is a presentation that prepared over 1000 frontline workers in Minneapolis to respond during Operation Metro Surge, and is now being taken on the road to share their experiences and best practices regarding these dangerous and ethically fraught encounters. Join Jayme in Seattle on 8/24/2026, Tacoma on 8/25/2026, Portland on 8/26/2026 and Eugene 8/27/2026.  Use this link for more information and to register for these events. “This is a human rights crisis that we will be talking about for years to come in health care and what happened in these hospitals, and at the same time, grassroots organizing is the only thing that has prepared us to begin to respond,” Jamey Sharp, an area health care worker and member of the health justice committee at immigrant advocacy organization Unidos MN, told Truthout (see article link below).
