When exactly did the customer become the employee? In this episode of I’m OK Being a Karen, Sterling takes on the rise of self-service and the slow disappearance of actual customer service. From self-checkout and tip screens to useless chatbots, endless phone trees, understaffed stores, and the dreaded “Have you checked our app?”—companies keep handing more of the work to us while prices, fees, and expectations keep climbing. And here’s the thing: this isn’t about hating technology. Some self-service options are genuinely convenient. But there’s a big difference between giving customers an option and making customers do the work because you no longer provide the service. So why are we afraid of being called a “Karen” for expecting a human being to actually help us? Drawing from my own firsthand experience, I talk about what the VA gets right, where it falls short, and why so many veterans have accepted the phrase, “It’s the military… we always have to wait.” From delayed disability compensation after surgery to bureaucracy, communication breakdowns, and the mindset that’s allowed these problems to become “normal,” I keep coming back to one question: What the hell are we doing here?
