    In this episode, Shaun of Thought sits down with Dr Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood to explore the role of women in Africa’s maritime spaces, from fisheries and coastal livelihoods to maritime security and the Blue Economy.     What does it mean for Africa to have agency over its own future, and what does African unity look like when political ambitions meet the realities of everyday life? In this episode of African Discoveries, Shaun of Thought sits down with Dr Malusi Mncube, author of Pan-African Agency: In Pursuit of Africa’s Revolutionary Political Economy and Uniting Africa: The Politics of Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, to explore the politics, possibilities and contradictions of African unity. From Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of continental unity to the African Union, regional integration and economic self-reliance, we examine why Africa’s longstanding ambitions for collective development have proved so difficult to realise. We also explore Africa’s position in a changing global order, the responsibility of African political leadership, and what genuine African agency could mean for ordinary citizens. The conversation also engages with South Africa’s trending asylum amendment debate, examining the broader questions of migration, belonging, sovereignty and the relationship between national interests and Pan-African solidarity. What happens when the ideal of an integrated Africa encounters the political and social realities of asylum and immigration? And how should African countries balance their responsibilities towards people seeking protection with the interests and concerns of their own citizens?     Building Africa’s Environmental Leaders: Inside TESIECS with Dr Sinethemba Sidloyi What happens when African universities stop working in isolation and begin sharing knowledge, people, and ideas across borders? In this episode of African Discoveries, Shaun of Thought sits down with Dr Sinethemba Sidloyi to explore TESIECS, an Intra-Africa Mobility Project designed to strengthen collaboration between African institutions while developing the next generation of environmental thought leaders and sustainability champions. From postgraduate scholarships and student mobility to staff development and collaborative research, TESIECS creates opportunities for African students and academics to learn from one another and develop locally contextual solutions to environmental challenges. We explore why intra-African academic mobility matters, how cross-border collaboration can strengthen African higher education, the role of young researchers in addressing environmental challenges, and why inclusion particularly of women, disadvantaged communities, differently-abled people and minority groups is essential to building a sustainable future.
