    Rosamund Dean is the author of two non-fiction books - Mindful Drinking and Reconstruction - she’s written as a journalist for all the national newspapers and women’s magazines and she was deputy editor of Grazia. After some years spent freelancing, Rosamund recently took a job at Guardian Labs as a commissioning editor.     Author Caro Giles on being entrepreneurial as a writer, protecting your creativity and writing memoir

    Caro Giles is the author of two memoirs: Twelve Moons and Unschooled, a columnist for Psychologies, an essayist on Substack and a single parent/carer to four girls. She writes in small pockets of time, around school drop-offs and home-educating. Caro is currently on a marketing push to sell 500 copies of the hardback version of Unschooled so that it can be published in paperback.     In this week’s episode of The Creative Way podcast, I’m talking about what makes you a ‘real writer’. Because it took me a ridiculously long time to feel like one and it came from an unexpected twist in my writing career. I also cover the period I spent trying to balance running an online course business with writing books, burnout, neurodivergence, becoming a poet for a year - living off savings - and then returning to launching courses, coaching and writing another book. I talk about what it was, 10 years in, that made me feel like a ‘real writer’, and what I’m doing with my latest poetry collection. Also, how the career I’ve designed in the past few months has made me feel like everything is now aligned. With notes on Patti Smith, Deborah Levy, Zadie Smith, Anne Tyler, Wendy Cope - ‘real writers’ - and whether we need writing to be our profession, to be real writers.
