    Give, Gave, Given…

Give, Gave, and Given The central message of "Give, Gave, and Given" is that salvation begins, continues, and finishes with what God has given in and through His Son. John 17 repeatedly uses the language of giving: the Father gave Jesus authority, gave Him a people, gave Him words, gave Him a work, and gave Him glory. Jesus then gave His people the Father's Word, gave His life for them, gave them His glory and mission, and promises ultimately to bring those the Father gave Him home to be with Him. The message emphasizes that these truths are all interconnected. We cannot celebrate that the Father gave Jesus His words while rejecting the truth that the Father also gave Him a people. Jesus says, "They were Yours, You gave them to Me." Rather than being afraid of biblical words such as election, chosen, grace, or given because they have sometimes been argued over or mishandled, believers should humbly receive everything Scripture teaches. The answer to badly taught doctrine is not avoiding doctrine, but handling God's truth faithfully. John 11 provides a powerful picture of God accomplishing purposes that men themselves did not understand. Caiaphas argued that Jesus should die in order to preserve the Jewish nation politically, but God was speaking something infinitely greater through his words: Jesus would die not only for that nation, but "to gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad." Caiaphas was thinking Rome and self-preservation; God was accomplishing redemption. That same truth appears in Pilate. Pilate believed he held authority over Jesus, but Jesus reminded him that he could have no authority unless it had been given from above. Pila
