The Superiority of the Son

This sermon examines the opening chapter of Hebrews to demonstrate the absolute superiority of Jesus Christ over angels and all creation. It argues that Jesus possesses a superior name as the Son of God, receives worship from all angelic beings, and shares in the eternal nature of the Creator. The text contrasts the servile role of angels with the kingly reign of Christ, who is enthroned at the Father's right hand. By interpreting Old Testament quotations through the lens of New Testament inspiration, the message affirms that Jesus is not merely a superior angel but God Himself. The sermon concludes with a call to worship Christ as Lord and to trust in His finished work of redemption.

Acts 12.1-11 - Peter Delivered

This sermon examines the contrasting fates of apostles James and Peter in Acts 12, highlighting God's sovereign choice to martyr one and miraculously deliver the other. The central theme emphasizes the efficacy of the early church's ceaseless prayer for Peter, arguing that divine intervention often defies human expectations and timing. The speaker critiques the hypocrisy of religious leaders who possess a form of godliness but deny its power, contrasting their moral rot with the genuine faith of the believers. By reflecting on the angel's sudden appearance and the opening of the iron gate, the message encourages believers to stand firm in their convictions and trust in God's ability to act supernaturally, even when answers seem delayed or coincidental.

A Faith of Equal Standing

This sermon explores the foundational truth of 2 Peter 1:1, emphasizing that all believers possess a faith of equal standing with the Apostle Peter's own. The message clarifies that saving faith is not generated by human effort but is a sovereign gift granted by God, ensuring that no believer holds a higher or lower status before God based on their maturity, gifts, or achievements. By grounding our standing in the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ rather than our own moral performance, the sermon dismantles the false hierarchies of spiritual superiority or inferiority. This assurance of equal acceptance through grace serves as the secure foundation for genuine growth in holiness and knowledge, encouraging believers to look to Christ rather than themselves for confidence and strength. The tone is pastoral and reassuring, inviting the congregation to rest in the unchanging nature of God's grace and the sufficiency of Christ's work.

An Approved Worker

This sermon explores the concept of being an approved worker by examining the narratives in Joshua chapters 14 through 19. It highlights Caleb as a model of confidence in God's promises and provision, contrasting his diligence with the complacency of the seven tribes who delayed taking possession of their inheritance. The message emphasizes that believers are stewards entrusted with God's work, not merely employees seeking transactional rewards. By understanding their role as stewards, Christians are called to be diligent in seeking God's plan and to act with the assurance that God provides all necessary resources. The central theme is that all actions should be directed toward God's glory, transforming the perspective from entitlement to faithful stewardship.

Beware of Covetousness

This sermon examines the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12 to address the sin of covetousness, defining it as desiring what God has not given and identifying it as a form of idolatry. The message clarifies that Jesus' first coming was for salvation rather than earthly political rule, correcting the misconception that He should arbitrate civil disputes. It challenges listeners to examine their hearts, recognizing that covetousness often disguises itself as financial security or legitimate goals, and serves as the basis for breaking God's law. The central call is to stop measuring life by material abundance and instead seek the kingdom of God, trusting in His provision rather than fearing for one's own security. The tone is convicting and pastoral, urging immediate repentance and a shift in perspective from earthly treasures to eternal riches.

Christian Doctrine (80): The Church and State

This instructional sermon examines the theological relationship between the church and the state, arguing that while both are institutions ordained by God, they possess distinct spheres of authority. The speaker contends that the state's primary role is to maintain civil order and enforce the second table of the law through natural law, whereas the church is responsible for promoting religion and enforcing both tables of the law through spiritual discipline. By analyzing historical confessions and biblical texts, the lesson distinguishes between the temporal peace provided by the magistrate and the eternal righteousness offered by the church. The preacher emphasizes that Christians should submit to governing authorities, pray for them, and engage in the political process to promote moral good, while recognizing that the state does not have the authority to dictate matters of faith or conscience.

Church Comfortable Versus Truly Saved

This sermon examines the Parable of the Sower as the definitive key to understanding the Kingdom of God, arguing that it distinguishes between those who are truly saved and those who are not. The central message challenges the modern evangelical tendency toward casual faith, urging believers to examine their own spiritual condition by looking for the evidence of fruit in their lives. The text contrasts the temporary enthusiasm of the stony ground and the choked growth of the thorny ground with the enduring, fruit-bearing nature of good soil. By citing Hebrews and Galatians, the exposition defines this fruit as the peaceable righteousness, changed speech, and conduct that result from a heart radically transformed by God's grace. The tone is pastoral and convicting, calling the congregation to self-examination to ensure they possess the genuine, abiding faith that produces spiritual fruit.
